The information is officially embargoed until 10pm tonight, but David Tennant is leaving the role of the Doctor at the end of the last Russell T. Davies scripted special at the end of next year, leaving a clean slate for Steven Moffat to take over completely.

David took on the role at the end of the 2005 series and has been voted by many as the best portrayal of the character of the 10 actors who have officially portrayed him.

It's a sad day for the majority of the British public. Regardless of what Samon says.

They should get Richard E Grant or Rowan Atkinson.

Both of whom have played the Doctor before. :P

Richard E. Grant in The Curse of the Fatal Death, Scream of the Shalka and The Feast of the Stone and Rowan Atkinson in The Curse of the Fatal Death.

Or was this what you were referencing? :x

I was referring to that :P

I liked both of them as The Doctor in Curse of Fatal Death, even though they were both hamming it up.

Good. I vote for David Mitchell as the new Doctor. Seriously.

He said in an interview it was a lifelong dream of his!

He'd be alright I suppose, but not one of my top choices.

Hahahaha, David Mitchell? There would be NO way I could take him seriously because everytime he looked at a woman I would imagine him thinking some very dirty, disturbing Peep Show-like thoughts.

Already an 11th doctor at this rate the doctor will run out of regenerations and the writers wil have to think up of something for him to get more ;)

But yeah this is a shame :(

They're not going to cancel the show through some arbitrary limit that was imposed back when 13 seemed such a long way off. They'll find a way to sort it out.

Russel T. Davies leaving: good news.
David Tennant leaving: not so good news.

Is David Mitchell really taking the role? You can't be f***ing serious. If he does then I'm not watching Doctor Who any more. He'd be a shite Doctor. :| I can't believe Tennant's leaving. I'll really miss him. :(

...No, he's not. He's said in an interview he would like to. And he would make a good doctor, I think. Better than Tennant, t'least.

The most prominent rumour at the moment is Paterson Joseph.

The grounds for the rumour are quite strong. He's been in Doctor Who before ("Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways" as Rodrick); he's been in Jekyll, a Steven Moffat production; and he was in Neverwhere back in the 90s, a production by Neil Gaiman, a good friend of Steven Moffat. Also, he'd be the first black Doctor, something I'm sure today's market could handle.

He needs to have sideburns to be The Doctor. It's more important than the show itself.

I vote mutton chops.

I couldn't live without my sideburns. <3 them.

Wow. That's a suprise. EDWARD NORTON AS THE DOCTOR!

I don't actually give a shit (hooray for Davies leaving!), but my vote is totally David Mitchell.

I have a feeling they'll go all serious with the next Doctor. They liked to do that in ye olde Whoe, after having a light hearted Doctor, didn't they?

It would also fit if the next Doctor is less attractive too, because you know, Davies is leaving and Doctor Who is going to man up as a result.

Yeah, so basically the next Doctor Who is Catherine Tate.

They should bring back Christopher Eccleston (by force if nessisary) and make it a prequel season!

If only.
Though didn't he imply in 'Rose' that he'd only recently regenerated? Seemed to be getting used to his new face etc. still.

Richard E Grant, Rowan Atkinson!

Well, they could slip in a prequel Christmas Special at least.

True. But if they were determined to get more Eccleston action in there is a way.

In 'Rose' towards the end the Doctor invites her into the TARDIS, she says "no" and the TARDIS leaves.
A few seconds later the TARDIS reappears and the Doctor invites her again, this time she says "yes".

Given that the TARDIS is a time machine you can fit any number of Eccleston adventures between those two events - you wouldn't even have to rehire Billy Piper.

If only.

Well, he had already been on a few adventures. The guy had those photos of him with that family who was supposed to board the titanic.

In a few years (hopefully soon!) Big Finish will get the rights to the Ninth Doctor at least. Then we'll get some 9 audio adventures. :E

I still think John Simm would be good as the Doctor, but seeing as he played the Master, they're not going to bring him in as the Doctor. That would have everyone totally confused.

Good job Dr. Who sucks and nobody of any importance actually cares who takes up the role.

Wait. So you don't like Doctor Who?

Well that's news to everyone in this thread thanks for informing us of that for the first time!

Yeah yeah I go on about Harry Potter being shit (which it is) but I generally give logical reasons not based entirely on subjective opinion.

He's just embarrassed cause it's brought Wales into the spotlight.

It could be more possible than you realise ;)

Dear god... I hope no one actually thought Doctor Who was good? It's just a good, entirely watchable shade of bad.

And John Simm as the Doctor? I wouldn't complain, but then continuity doesn't exactly reverse my polarity the wrong way with the show.

There was a rumour that David Tennant would regenerate into John Simm and John Simm would regenerate into David Tennant in one of the specials.

I doubt this will happen though.
