I've been actually looking for a new MMO to play, and this looks like it could be fun to try....considering its for free. Has anyone given it a whirl before??

what prompted this? I've been curious to play it but generally when a game goes free to play it's bad times ahead.

I didn't like it at all.
The combat sucks and the world isn't anything we haven't seen before.(look at the countless number of D&D games already out.)

Yes, free. No, not suddenly interesting or worth playing. DDO tries to do a lot of things and succeeds in almost none of them; i.e. replicating tabletop Dungeons and Dragons, the narration falls flat and the inability to replenish magic and health without cumbersome rest points and potions or lengthy stays in taverns is simply frustrating and doesn't translate to an MMO. It tries to make combat more engaging and click based--instead animations are largely stale and uninspired.

DDO aims to encourage group play, when in reality the lower end dungeons will almost entirely be played out with yourself and perhaps a few NPCs spouting dialog that makes you yearn for Courtney Solomon's film adaptation, a feat which I previously believed to be impossible. I'd advise anyone but those with a pessimistic tendency towards anything remotely Dungeons and Dragons related to stay away. MMO gamers and casual PC gamers alike will assuredly pass on this game after the first fifteen agonizing, stale and uninspired minutes of gameplay.

Perhaps they'll have some success with the FTP model, but DDO stands as in many ways as a festering turd of an example of why the MMO genre is amongst the most stagnant, devolved and boring game genres around. It makes WoW and Aion look like triumphant innovators.

It's not totally free though, right? Gotta still pay for some extra content and such...or so I believe
