I dunno, looks like debates are hot with Bush in the lead......

But really, a debate forum would be a nice addi"c"tion, since so many news or announcement threads just turn into one in the Off-topic forum.

actually a political discussion forum would be a good idea....

Well in theory yes but in practice?

I don't know about you guys but I've been on various fourms over the years and almost without exception discussion threads fail to serve a purpose beyond giving people a place to vent their views about something but nothing more. What I mean is look threads never reach a conclusion , it always end up with two sides , generaly very vehement and single minded about their view ( read I'm right and YOUR wrong! mentality ) and you end up with a thread full of anger, hostility and no actual debate.

Plus as Fenric has said Spam. If someone came up with a system that encourages debate I'd look at it ie a method of posting or moderation or perhaps even like a debating club where a subject is picked people who are interested in debating that topic do so perhaps taking differing views with a rebuttal and then a conclusion maybe a vote to see who "wins" .. meh something like that , but a straight forum in my opinion wouldnt work.

Couldn't agree more

I like the subject for a debate idea. I'll admit I like to get involved in these debates but I dont think everyone who posts in these topics are just trying to up their post cont...I personally couldnt care less about post counts. I like to join these discussions because you are all my peers (in terms of gaming), and if I cant discuss current events with my peers who am I going to discuss it with?

I completely agree, however I don't think we need a whole other forum devoted to it. Introducing another board devoted entirely for debates will probably end up causing more problems (which have already been said) than simply keeping all debates inside the off-topic board like how it is right now.

yes I agree the off topic forum is enough

btw mullinator, your avatar gives me the heebee jeebees. My son's about that age and if he flipped me the bird I wouldnt know how to respond :)

I don't really like this idea, wors case scenario making a forum like this could split up the community, or atleast those who participate in the debate forum. I don't like this idea, I think the current forums we have right now are good for the time being.

heh heh, thanks. I got it off some joke pictures that had the title "If Dad's raised kids", not sure what I would do either if my future kid did the same thing. :D

This is exactly the reason these types of threads should be seperated from other "off-topic" threads. N-S.org has a seperate "Discussions" forum to seclude all what-I-call "Heavy topics". Politics, Religion etc...anything that is likely to turn into a war of opinions. You arent gonna get an effective "debate" on the internet, especially from a bunch of gamers whos beleifs and opinions are no more objective than Micheal Moore's or Jerry Falwell's. I doubt many people here could recognize logical fallacies when they see them or understand the rules of a debate. All this "Debate Club" will do alienate those who cant be a part of it. The staff has every right to censor or forbid any topics they see fit, so I would suggest either a seperate forum for "Discussions" or forbidding them entirely. Trying to promote acedemic style debate on a game forum is a bad idea imo...this just isnt the place for it.
