DEFCON - First Impressions Thread

Besides the authentication problems that really pissed me off, I found it pretty good though that really took alot of enjoyment out of it. I played the tutorial...that was easy enough, in the final part not one person inside the US died, and I killed something like 54 million of theirs. Made me feel like kind of a bad guy though. D: Exciting while its all going on.

Just played the tutorial and watched the 3 CPU recorded game thingy, it exceeds my expectations :D

The atmosphere is the strongest part of this in my opinion, it's simply amazing and unlike anything else I've experienced.

I can't wait to start playing this all the time and get better.
 
Hmm... This is annoying now. Whatever tactic I try, I fail. :( Ah well. Keep trying. :E
 
So the only drawbacks of the demo is the fact that you can have only 2 players simultaneously and you can't change modes?

What modes are in the full version?
 
Authentication got fixed so I tried a 5 cpu match, I got africa, I barely beat europe. They are definately a beast, the main trouble is how close together their cities are, it makes their missle defense extremely effective. My Air and Sea tactics need work though. Very fun though, can't wait to try MP.

Yeah, my sea tactics are horrid. Gotta get much better at those. Man, this will likely take while to master. Awesome!
 
I like it. I REALLY like it. I'll love it when I make my computer run properly. So far, it's fantastic =D
 
This was one of the most surreally beautiful games I've ever played. The completely dehumanize the hundreds of millions of deaths, but every once in a while you can here in the background someone talking, a man coughing, or a woman weeping.

Yeah, the sea stuff is hard, I did ok with my subs, but my ships just died(But they were triple teamed.) I'd say I'm worse with the planes though, no matter what, they just got shot down without doing a thing.

I also cant figure out how to change my name. D:

Well I've been playing widescreen fine.

Very cool. So far the CPU has been managing the sea better - they always seem to have carriers left for defcon1. My score starts off poorly but gets better towards then end when the CPU goes into offencive mode and lower their defence.
 
Pretty good.

I've been playing it on linux(Using wine).
Hopefully there will be native binaries later.

Just played against 2 computers as Europe, it wasn't hard at all. Is Europe over powered?
 
I have to go out for a tiny bit but I watched most of a rolling demo and it seems so rad !

I'm going to stop playing CoH and do the DC tutorials and than play for hoourrsss.

We need a music-suggestion thread ! I know there's one on Penny-Arcade so I'll head over to there as well.

I think ShackNews said the same in their review. Its not necessarily that they're over-powerful, but they have a great strategic location. Everything is compact so it makes air defenses very effective.

But their air bases, radar, and navy are limited because of it. I haven't played much, but they don't seem impossible. I think they just play as more of a turtle, less sneaky, faction. Tough though, for certain.
 
I played it...on a really slow speed.

My initial impression is thus that the game is technically very boring, but in all it is a work of art, it gave me a strange sense of beauty and awe at the same time as millions of people died and the music got lower and lower.

A+ for atmosphere and effect, wow.

However, the game is really a little too simple for my tastes. I wish I had more control. I guess I simply must practice and get better.
 
Hmm, to deviate from the norm, I really couldn't get into this. Odd to say for a game where you're nuking stuff every 5 seconds, but there wasn't quite enough "bang" for me :p

Been playing too much Company of Heroes methinks... just gotten used to the pacing in that and this was a huge step back. Also, I found the atmosphere find of... depressing. The music's oddly effective that way...
 
Just finished my first person match.

We had 4 people though 1 guy left pretty quick but I did pretty freaking well.. in fact, I would've won if I didn't make some silly nuke launch decisions. :(

I can't seem to coonect to other demo servers...it just hangs at attempting to connect...how many retries is it supposed to go thru?
 
I might be stupid but where can I find said demo? Can't see it on Steam, but that's prolly because I don't get any text in Steam.
 
Can we get a group together to play one of those Alliance games? It sounds fun, but not with AI or random people on servers.
 
I'm definently up for it but I'm in Aus (Time zone rubbish) + a lack of a 'Friends' system in Defcon. :(

Sounds like good crack. You'd want to make it at a time that would suit some of the US players though, as well.

This game barely takes a hit on graphics or anything. You should be able to play this fine with no matter what PC you got.

I didn't see an official list but I only had a cursory look at IV's site. If you can run Darwinia, you are more than capable for running this game.

Just try out the demo to make sure :)

I'm not sure if I want to get this game. While the appeal of recreating War Games is huge, I'm just not sure on it...

I'm very much up for a match like that :D (Even though I'm basically a randomer :()
 
I also really love the design of the interface in this game. The way the camera pans in and out, the very functional and aestically interesting transparent windows, etc. is great.

Not to mention the art in general.


Sadly gameplay isn't as good as art/atmosphere (just like in Darwinia).
