DEFCON - First Impressions Thread

Anything from Speed DEFCON where matches are guaranteed to last under 15 minutes, to Office Mode; 6 hours. On Default mode with no settings change it's about 45 minutes.

I'd argue that. The sheer amount of strategy is immense in DEFCON. There are a ton of ways in which to kill your opponent.

QFT

This is one of the very few strategy games that feels like it involves real strategy IMO.

Has anyone else experienced the problem of the game not running on a PC without a soundcard? I am getting that at work and more is the pity because I would love to try out 'Office Mode'!!

I'm gettin' a free full version from one of my friends' friends who didn't want the game, so I might be free to play.

No, my PC works fine. Check out the official forums; I think there's some on there with similar problems.

well, I played the demo (ran fine on my laptop with integrated video) and I found it to be a pretty fun game, the visual aspect of it is really intriguing. I almost find it relaxing to play it (which is strange because you win through genocide :) ) Definitely a cool game, not sure if I'm going to buy it though.

I'm liking the game more and more. Its kind of like a 6 player evolved version of chess. I think I'm getting a bit better with naval tactics(And my sub placement is great), but my air power is still horrible.

yea, it helps to spectate games and see how the good players use and place their units, its a great help to get good at this game.

I got that demo glitch where it was authenticated as a full version, and had numerous brilliant games. The next day it was back to normal.

I paid my ten quid immediately.

I still love the amazing sound the most

Getting better still, and liking it more still. I've much improved my air tactics, but it turns out my naval tactics are still pretty bad. Still, I'm usually the winner.

Glitch, or clever marketing tactic? :O

I had the glitch where I paid for the full game and was only able to authenticate as the demo version.

I can tell you now that it's now clever marketing.

Still it's authed correctly now, so I still love Introversion.

Still enjoying the game a lot, it rather reminds me of diplomacy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(board_game)

My biggest annoyance is the fact that you can fire nukes at your ally, then leave the alliance just before the nuke hits. You get the points, but the "ally" has no chance of shooting down the first few nukes. You can also destroy your allies silo's and radars with nukes without breaking the alliance or receiving a score penalty.

Well, one solution would be to only play on servers with "Defection" turned off.

That takes the fun out of diplomacy.

And europe isn't overpowered... because their defenses are so tightly packed, if you can saturate their defenses, they are screwed to the 10th degree, since they have no "Backup" cities.

True. I have no problem with backstabbing what so ever. But I feel it should be, leave alliance then launch nukes rather than launch nukes and wait until the last possbile moment to leave the alliance.

Also true. And you can use Europe's reputation against them in diplomacy. The best game I've had so far was in 'Survivor' mode - it was late in the game and Europe was winning on 98% population, so i convinced the rest of the world to gang up on Europe. Once Europe was raped Europe convinced the world to gang up on Russia who had taken the lead. Russia then got attacked and I won :).

I just remembered playing a game that was very similar to this called "total domination" or "world domination"... or something like that...

anyway, it was a nuclear stradegy game quite like this, with a 3D earth, and live-action cut scenes... anyone know what Im talking about?

Love it...addicted to it

Buy it now...its cheap and lots of fun.
Never knew blowing up half of the world could be that satisfying ;)
Makes me feel like some James Bond Villan.
Great mood and gameplay....

What you waiting for????

Ps.: Can't we create a dir in general games-chat just for DEFCON? For troubleshooting, strategy and general chatter...

Beats me why buggy, dull and untested games get released with a £29 pricetag and fun, polished, out-of-the-box games like defcon are practically free. Superb game.

How large is the file size? I acualy bought Darwinia through Steam because it was only 20MB (56ker)

Steam says it takes up 65mb of space, so it aint that bad... but I guess that's still a few hours of downloading. I'd say its worth it though :p

65MB, shit, that's too much. 20-30 hours. And I've never seen it in a show :(

I tried the demo, (well only the tutorial so far) and its pretty awesome, great atmosphere as most have said... although I really suck at these kinds of games :(
