Defense Command

We are looking for some more people to work on various aspect of this third person team strategy mod for Half Life 2.

We are currently in need of:

  • Concept Artist
  • Content Artist
  • 3D modeler
  • Texture Artist
  • Web Desiger
  • Music Composer

Defense Command combines real time strategy and cooperative play. Each player acts as a lieutenant, taking control of a single unit - be it a squad of infantry or a tank - and working with a commander - who oversees and directs operations for the team - does battle with the enemy. The unit is viewed from a third person perspective in order to facilitate coordination with other players and to provide the player with a level of situational awareness that a first person perspective cannot achieve.

It is set in a post apocalyptic world where the different factions of humanity are separated from each other by oceans, desert or other geographical features. The first faction is the technologically advanced North West Republic who are based in the two western Canadian provinces as well as the four north west states in the USA. The second faction are the Prols who inhabit the broken and decayed Eastern North American cities. They have similar technology to the NWR but in a far more primitive form in all cases. They also follow a Stalanistic method of governing their large population.

The conflict between the NWR and the Prols is the focus of the mod and those will be the sides at the initial release.

Concept artist:

-A good grasp of human form as well as mechanical objects. Ability to come up with creative and stylish designs which also conform to the rules of a set universe.

3D Modeler:

-The ability to produce 3d models of given objects to desired specifications. In some cases, drafted drawings will be provided, in others the modeler must work from loose concept art.

Texture artist:

-The ability to realistically texture 3d models for mapping purposes. Must be able to alter texures to conform with the style of an environment.

Not to sound like a bugger or anything, but first it was CS clones, then WW2 mods, and now everyone seems to have an obsession with RTS's..

Its only a RTS for one person, really, the commander and he only directs the players. For everyone else, it's third person coop.

At no time will anyone ever be clicking on and directing computer controlled units.

That's what I meant.. ever since Savage everybody has been rushing off to make a '1 commander' mod..which has been proven not to work that well..

I began thinking about this mod a year before Savage came out (November 2002 is when the first documents on my computer are dated). I drew the first concept art in June of 2003 and put the first web-site up a month before Savage was released. If anything this is an example of paralell "evolution" in gaming and I am defintily not trying to copy it.

I will investigate your claim that the system I am planning dosent work.

Thank you.

Thanks for not overreacting :p I typically find when you have 1 person in charge in a mp situation, it doesn't work out to well without a good communication system... how will the commander position be assigned?

At first it will be random but after the first game it will be the most helpful player to the team. This score is not based off of a mere kill count but by a multitude of factors. Theoretically, a player could become commander the next round without firing a shot.
