I would like to defrag my hard drive. Unfortunatly it is a process that will take an extremely long time due to the size of my hard drive. I am using the windows default defrag program but I get the feeling it does not conduct the process as fast as it should, it seems that no matter what my CPU speed is, the amount or RAM, or the read write speed is of my hard drive, the program will always work at the same speed.

Is there another defrag program out there that can work faster and more efficiently? Or am I stuck waiting for 12 hours while my computer defrags.

Oh ya I forgot to mention that I have to defrag in Safe mode, other wise the defrag process will have to constantly start over since it tells me that windows settings have changed and it will have to restart the defrag process. Is there another way I can fix this problem as well?

My computer does the "Ooh, Something Has Changed, I Must Now Restart And Annoy My Owner!" thing too!:devil:

Have you tried:dork::

1. Closing down all non-essential programs via Ctrl-Alt-Del (Once!),
2. Disabling your antivirus and
3. Checking your system for scheduled-activation programs, trojans, keytrackers, and so on?

If anyone else comes up with something, there are at least two people watching this thread that would love to he- ...err... read it.

Ya ive tried all that, you should also disable the the screen saver. It should work though if you restart windows in Safe Mode.

On my computer you can get into safe mode by restarting and holding CTRL or F8 until the windows starting screen appears. It should then give you a menu that asks you to enter a number to enter windows safe mode, enter the number and you will start the computer in safe mode. You defrag your computer in safe mode the same way you defrag in normal mode. This works for me but it is still a big annoyance.

don't bother doing all that. You still need to run it multiple times to get a really clean defrag.

Run Diskkeeper or Diskkeeper Lite.

i prefer O&O Defrag, it has different defrag methods, some are faster than others, so you can really do it quickly, or if you wanna do more than one method to get everything nicely ordered that works too.

I use my computers normal defrag program, but it can't get past checking the drive for errors. So I haven't defraged my HD in a while.

Aight thanks everyone. I guess im going with diskeeper. Now to umm... aquire this piece of software. :cheese:

Yeah, he was in Discworld II, but that game is based on the best british fantasy-comedy series of books that there is. Look for "Discworld", written by Terry Pratchett.;)
