Right... here goes.

I brush regular same as anybody else, eat sensible (mostly) use mouthwash, dont eat after brushing (at night).

But i have really bad teeth.

I want to go to the dentists to get this sorted but im going to be embarressed. Dentists gonna take one look in my mouth and say "LOL nub dnt brosh is teef"

:(

So you're afraid to go to the doctor because your teeth are bad.

Does not compute.

heh don't worry. Teeth tend to get dirty after a while even though you are a hard core brusher.

So yah, it's normal. And they can sort it out, that's what they're there for.

Don't be embarrased about what your dentist says. :\ It's his job to say that sort of stuff. He'll just give you an apointment for the hygenist and they'll clean your teeth for you.

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow for my check up and I know I'll have to be put down for the hygenist again. I always do. To be honest though, I only seem to clean my teeth at night and in the morning on school nights/days when I go to bed early and wake up early. When it comes to the holidays when I go to bed late and wake up late I always never bother. Stupid, really. But even the weeks when I do, the plaque still arrives on my bottem front teeth and once the plaque is there it ain't going.

well dont eat alot of sugar or drink alot of soft drinks
just drink water
always use baking soda when brushing
ALWAYS
dont eat sugar!!!
dont eat sugar!!
that means dont do that fructose sucrose and etc. any food with mroe than 10g of sugar is bad for your teeth atleast thats the rule i follow

this is what i do my teeth arent in the best shape but they are getting better
my parents kind of abused me because they didnt want to take me to the dentist until all my baby teeth fell out so when i got older and indulged upon more and more sweets my teeth began to have cavities instead of me getting sealents and ect, but all is well now my teeth have the occasional jingle

but if you brush with baking soda usually you teeth will get whiter and floss like once every three or so days your teeth will get cleaner
and sometimes you really do need a dentist to clean them
just make sure you get a dentist that you like not some really old jerk usually they are not as precise and not as keen to new denistry
try to get someone
maybe like a young woman or a middle aged man who knows how to crack jokes and really loves their patients
also make sure you get a fairly neat office thats somewhat hi tech but not too expensive ie. you dont want your mouth to be worked on using equipment from the early 90s and make sure that the office clerks are nice and not senile

Don't you go anyways? I thought everyone went every six months like me.

I go every six months, and I've got spectacularly clean teeth every time... and I only brush once a day, and usually halfassedly. Just because they might be a bit stained or yellowish (as mine are, due to a huge love for sweet tea and past smoking habits) doesn't mean they're dirty.

my teeth are awful, so I know what you mean. Whenever I go to a dentist I am highly embarrassed. It's not my teeth so much that are terrible, but my gums.

I go every 6 months and they clean me up nicely. They always tell me I need to floss more but I never do, and I never get any cavities. I did recently get an infection after my wisdom teeth removal, which is a pain in the ass. I need to take more pills and go back to the oral surgen.

And what nofx meant to say was done go crazy eating too much sugar. Soft drinks do more harm to teeth but it doesn't hurt to have a cola every now and then. I drink an average of a half cola a day probably. As long as you brush 2 to 3 times a day you'll be aight.

I brush my teeth really "halfass-ish" as well, and my teeth are still squeaky clean. Other than getting a retainer in fifth grade, I've had no problems. I also go to the dentist once every nine months or so, and get my teeth cleaned, which is one of the worst feelings in the world, but it helps...

trust me dentist see it all the time, and they wont make you feel embarassed. just tell them that you brush regularly, use mouthwash, and you still have bad breathe and its as simple as that. they wont laugh at you.

theyll give you a special mouthwash that should take care of it.

Yeah it's about 100 proof mouthwash. Enjoy.

I brush regularly, but just recently the rear-most back tooth on the right side of my jaw has lost two big chunks. :(

I haven't been to the dentist for about a year though. Just go man, you'll get a scrape and polish. He'll maybe do your teeth too. :O

I've told you all how I brush my teeth (rub it with a towel) and I jsut went to the dentist a couple days ago. Said my teeth were fine, just floss more.

So the important lesson here is, you don't need to brush your teeth. I only do it so my breath doesn't smell like crap.

Um you're supposed to go to the dentist's once every 6 months anyway. If you haven't been that might have contributed to it.

my teeth are crooked. Well, not really. Only two of them, but they're where it counts -- right on the bottom row front. So are my teeth bad? Nah, just a bit crooked -- but still technically healthy.

Lol don't be embarassed. They probably get much worse people anyway. My sister for example almost never brushes her teeth (absolutly disgusting. my mom has to tell her to brush her teeth, an event that occurs about once every 2 weeks at best) and the dentist finds many cavities (surprising I know) every time she gets a dental checkup. I brush 2-3 times a day myself and I have never had a cavity in my life.

Don't worry about it too much. Dentists are supposed to help you with your teeth.

I go to the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and x-rays. I usually brush after every meal because I don't like that funky taste in my mouth all day.

Don't brush too hard or it'll damage your gums and remember to floss regularly.

If he says that you can Pwn him with a hax or something :E but really don't be afraid what does he know!

If your teeth are fine and you still have bad breath then there's something else wrong with you. There are lots of causes for bad breath, and believe me, none of the dentist will ever help you (unless rotten teeth, cavities or anything that has to do with teeth is the cause). They may also tell you that the bad breath comes from your stomach (which rarely happens, and if the smell is not horrible and I mean HORRIBLE, then it's not from your stomach).

Use regular mouthwash, not some bad breath crap. Just a waste of money, they cost like 5x the normal mouthwash and they do nothing. Just a temporary cover up and nothing permanent (unless you are a millionaire and can afford using it every 1 hour).
Avoid listerine if it causes you dry mouth (read below). It contains alcohol and this is what dries your mouth. Try to use mouthwashes that contain zinc or chlorine dioxide (or both if there is any).

What most dentists (and docs in general, since this part of medicine isn't advanced enough for everyone to know details yet) don't know is that most of the smell comes from your tongue; or from the very back of it in particular.

Look in the mirror, do you have a white coating or some white nasty stuff over your tongue? (altough some people have naturally a mild white coating over their tongue, which has nothing to with what I'm telling you. Sometimes it happens after the use of antibiotics) These are sulfur compounds produced by anaerobic bacteria that live in your tongue. And it smells like shit.
Their population is normally controlled by your body, but sometimes, they "overpopulate" because of some "instability".

Those bacteria feed from your food that is left on your tongue after eating. A good practice is brushing your tongue after brushing your teeth. Just brush a few times in circles. Or you can use a tongue scraper (which is much more effective) to scrape your tongue and especially that nasty white stuff. In some countries, tongue scrapers are as common as toothbrushes.

What controls the population of bacteria in your mouth and generally cleans it, is saliva. If you have dry mouth (xerostomia), or less than normal saliva flow, this may contribute in your bad breath since your saliva will not be effective enough to clean your mouth due to it being not enough.
Common and temporary causes of xerostomia is alcohol and smoking. Chewing gum helps moisten your mouth because saliva is produced.
One more, more serious reason is diabetes. Diabetics usually (or maybe always) have dry mouth and thus, bad breath. Consult your doctor for a test.

On more cause is Post Nasal Drip. Post Nasal Drip is when mucus drips ("drips" is just an understatement) in the back of your throat instead of your nose. The bacteria on your tongue thrive on it, and it coats your esophagus on its way down to your stomach. Another source for bacteria.
Sometimes you have PND (short for post nasal drip) it but don't feel it.
Post Nasal Drip happens for many reasons. One is when there is an obstruction in your nose that prevents mucous from coming out of it. For example, a deviated septum. The nasal septum is a cartilage that divides your two nostrils. When it's deviated (that is, leans to left or right) enough to obstruct the passage, it prevents mucous from flowing through your nose, so it flows, where else, to the only passage left. It can also cause difficulty in breathing. It can also prevent the mucus from coming out and concentrate in your sinuses, which is bad and can cause infections (chronic/accute sinusitis)
Chronic sore throat (pharyngitis) can be a sign of PND because the mucus irritates your throat.
Many people have a slightly deviated septum but its not deviated enough to cause a problem.
Luckily, the deviated septum can be fixed by a simple surgery called Septoplasty.

One more cause of PND can be allergies. Have a full allergy test.

A cause for bad breath can also be chronic or accute (acctue means its just normal sinusitis that lasts less than 4 weeks) sinusitis. Especially if it comes not only from your mouth but your nose too. Which is a sign that there's an infection in your nose.

Also PND can be caused by GERD (acid reflux) which basically is stomach acid entering your esophacus (frequent heartburn is usually a sign of GERD). There's also LPR which is pretty much the same, only most sufferers don't have heartburn.

Actually what you have to do is brush after every meal, floss, rinse (3 things that you do whether you do or not have bad breath).
Fix all your teeth until you have no dental problems. Wait for a month or two and if your bad breath consists:

1. Visit an Ear Nose Throat doc (ENT) and tell him EXACTLY what you have.
2. Have a full allergy test
3. Have yourself tested for diabetes
4. Have a full checkup of your intestines, stomach, whatever. Most of the time, bad breath is a sign that there's something going wrong in your body (unless as I said, the bad breath is because of your own fault, that is, you have dental problems and don't follow proper dental hygiene tactics).

I would write more but it's 2am and I'm falling asleep.

By the way, my cousin is a dentist and I have a few docs in my family which are the source of my information :p

Good luck

I wouldn't be scared of dentists.

Mind you I do work for one...

i was the other day and was told i have awesome teeth....:)

All those times I've went to the dentist, they've told me how good my teeth look and how clean they are. Funnily enough, about 90% of the dentists have been female. Last time I checked I had a hot chick bent over me.

I brush two times a day, at the morning and the evening.

3 times if u really wanna improve, floss, use mouth wash

great post zeem
