Given the current disparity on the release date for Half Life 2 between Gabe (Valve) and Vivendi (edit) Universal, how do you feel about the the symbiotic relationship of these two types of companies in the gaming industry?

Publishers are often the ones who dictate when a game is released, often prematurely, in this case it has all appearences that Vivendi wants to take additional measures to maximize profits by ensuring the game incorporates a unique CD key system (I'm thinking Windows activation). If you recall back a few years to 1998 (maybe it was '97) when the DVD was formally released, it had been delayed three years to create an encryption system that was cracked in six months, an example where the people at the top stalled the inclusion of new technology.

Given the development time for Half Life 2, it seems ridiculous for them to attempt to tack on a new system when they had more than enough time during the development time. Also, Half Life 2 was supposed to be the ultimate example of a game whose release date stayed constant, versus games like UT2k3 with the "just another two weeks" drama going on for months.

Another interesting possibility is that of delaying HL2 to include an AA fix with DirectX 9.1 so that at launch there would not be a problem for Nvidia cards...even this seems a little overkill, as I hardly believe that people are going to be more content to wait another three-four months for a fix that only a small minority of gamers would truly utilize.

So how do you feel about this? I for one believe that Vivendi should have made sure that Valve's PR person was reading from the same line at the very least, and visa versa, this kind of split on release dates does nothing but confuse customers, and potentially injure the reputation of both.

Edit: Minor grammar, company name, spelling.

I read over steam forums, that Valve implies new CD-key protection. I hate all these new rumors, which are just that, rumors. Anyway, publishers… I am not in game business and I have no idea how communication works. Are you sure that publisher can move dates, even if game is complete? I know they can put due date, but still.

Anyway, I want to see solid prove from Valve that date is not moved, and that guy was just smoking something.

Delaying the game would be a VERY BAD IDEA :flame: :flame: :flame: :flame:

if they delay 3-4 months for something as frivilous (sp?) as FSAA.

then honestly wouldnt mind finding everyone that complained about not having fsaa at release and doing something very bad to them

I still think it either a case of

1. The news site misunderstanding what the VU spokesman said. (i.e. "it will be released before holidays 2003")

or

2. The spokesman was not informed and provided the incorrect information.

Personally, I'm gona believe only those possibilities until proven otherwise. Could you give me a semi-official source of where the cd-key rumor came from? I saw it on one other hl2 site.

Bad, how is that? They will polish the game, and you will buy it anyway, the day it comes out.

We still don't know if the rumor is true, but if it is then it shows a pretty massive communications failure between Valve and VU.

The game engine is complete, all that's left is content polishing, and I seriously doubt an additional four months would do much.

The core problem here is that the two parties involved are saying different things, and all that leads to is rumors. The beauty of concealing the development of Half Life 2 almost all the way to E3 2003 has helped focus the hype and the community, and failing to keep with that line of thinking can only end up hurting both companies.

if for just FSAA, than thats not just polishing the game, thats just attending to every whiner whining about FSAA. but who knows, its probably not even gonna be delayed. so you guys are safe :afro:

where are the 3DRealms fanboys? George Broussard would have something to say on this topic. =P

The best news I've heard, is that I'm makin $45 tomorrow, and I just put $5 down on HL2 at EB today. <3.

On topic, I'm not going to believe what people say until Gabe or someone at VALVe gives official word.

Er... isn't the original half-life already ultra secure. I mean, I bought 3 copies of it just for the damn Key (at 60$ for the first, and 15$ for the 2 extra CD-Keys 4 years later).

I don't think a CD-Key generator exists for HL1 and it's been, what 5 years....

The best news I've heard all day was Munro saying that the forums will be back in 20 minutes.

:w00t:

lmao.. thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Delayed because of cd key system? That's halarious.

edit: there are keygens for HL1, but they don't pass WON authentication. So you could play single player, but not online.

hey i'll be happy without fsaa, anyway they can patch l;ater if neccessary, why delay the damn thing. i thought this was a hardweare problem anyway?:afro:

also they would be mad to delay for cd key stuff. cd keys work for all the games that are out now, i mean have you ever tried playing multi on a cd key server game ie wolfenstein with a crack?, it just dont work bossman, it just dont damn work me biatch understand me mon.:afro:  :afro:  :afro:

I suspect the same, that for whatever reason, someone up top at Vivendi decided it should be delayed, which is why Gabe wouldn't know about it. I've seen the exact same thing happen before. I can't comment on the reasons until there is more iformation about it.

Doesn't that go contrary to what was mentioned on the previous page? In that Valve is the one who makes the decisions?

Normally the publishers decide on the release date of a game. However in this case with Steam being a delivery option and the size and name of both Valve and Half-life I would say they have a massive amount of bargaining power and could walk to another publisher who will ship when Valve wants at a moments notice. I know Valve and Vivendi have always had a good relationship but it was Valve who stated release dates so boldly at E3 and their reputation that stands to be harmed, I'd not be surprised if vivendi were put under pressure from Valve to keep things as sept 30th this time rather than the publisher pushing on the devs as normally happens.

If this decision has been made and it has come from Vivendi then it seems to me like some form of cashing in to be honest. The original date that came out of nowhere of sept 30th was set as 2 weeks before doomIII. Now that d3 has been pushed back to 2004, stalker appears to be moving towards summer 2004 and far cry is looking like 2004 aswell I wouldn't be surprised if valve and vivendi (who i assume are publishing cz, can anyone confirm?) want to give cz time to sell before it gets butwhooped by the hl2 engine, more rumours I know but just a theory anyway.

Please feel free to disregard anything I just typed.
