Was thinking about uploading a few things to Deviant Art. Now, I currently only have one thing submitted, and that's a few years old. So, when I was reading the submission agreement (since I don't want to upload my stuff and end up having it stolen), I stumbled across this:

3. License To Use Artist Materials. As and when Artist Materials are uploaded to the deviantART Site(s), Artist grants to deviantART a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to do the following things during the Term:

a) to prepare and encode Artist Materials or any part of them for digital or analog transmission, manipulation and exhibition in any format and by any means now known or not yet known or invented;

b) to display, copy, reproduce, exhibit, publicly perform, broadcast, rebroadcast, transmit, retransmit, distribute through any electronic means (including analog and digital) or other means, and electronically or otherwise publish any or all of the Artist Materials, including any part of them, and to include them in compilations for publication, by any and all means and media now known or not yet known or invented ;

c) to modify, adapt, change or otherwise alter the Artist Materials (e.g., change the size) and use the Artist Materials as described in Section 3(b); and

d) the right to sublicense to any other person or company any of the licensed rights in the Artist Materials, or any part of them, subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

e) Artist acknowledges that Artist will not have any right, title, or interest in any other materials with which Artist Materials may be combined or into which all or any portion of Artist Materials may be incorporated.

f) During the Term, deviantART's licenses under this Agreement include the right to use any part of the Artist Materials in the promotion, advertising or marketing of the DeviantART Sites.

g) As used in this Agreement, the term "Artist Materials" means any content uploaded to the deviantART Site(s) which may include without limitation Artist's name(s) (including professional names), trademarks, trade names, likenesses, photographs, biographical materials, artwork, liner notes, and other graphical or textual materials and any and all "skins," computer-generated images or other artwork or images that Artist submits to deviantART.

WTF? That doesn't sound good D:

Am I right in being suspicious?

Can't you just slap some watermark across the front and then link to the real thing in the description? That should get the art noticed without you risking it

Mother****er. I never noticed that. I wonder if I should go on a warning spree?

wouldn't do anything, there has been heaps of these scares on da but nothing ever really happens except for 1 or 2 'popular' whores on da removing all their images and some lame thing like that.

basically, get the hell off of da, it's killing your soul among many things.

WTF did you just say?

do you just randomly replace words with "da"?

someone's not the brightest crayon in the box...

on topic - yeah they're pretty much saying that they reserve the right to do pretty much whatever the hell they want with whatever you submit on there. if you would like to keep all the rights to your own art, i'd suggest going elsewhere.

Indeed.

...I didn't understand it the first time, either. No matter what you illiterate Internet cronies may think, there is a palpable difference between "da" (a mispronunciation of "the") and "DA" (an acronym).

Yea basically by submitting it to DA, you give them the rights to resize, adapt, and use it for whatever commercial or personal uses they want, as well as distribute it to anyone they wish to on their site. It makes sense because you see them doing that throughout the size (ie: thumbnails, allowing others to download it, advertising or featuring certain art pieces). Its doubtful they'll try and use it for any misuse, but of course that agreement is there to protect them above all else.

Ah, I get it. It didnt help that he typed them in lowercase. I thought he was being lazy at typing "dere" which is lazy type for "there." Or that he was saying "the", but that didnt make much sense.

At any rate, I honestly doubt they would do anything like that, unless the artist was amazing, which most of us are not.

Oh... lessee the ones I have marked fave.

Endling.deviantart.com
bleedman.deviantart.com
nch85.deviantart.com
risachantag.deviantart.com

These are my favourite artists on DevArt, and to see their work taken and used by their hoster would be a shame.
