Well, you should. You'll be staying alive more if you do that. It's just...well...she's a magic user, and most cases they take a lot of dmg fast. Of course, the more vit you have, the better. Just be sure to have enough Str to equip the better armor and such.

Well, because there is hardcore, and then there is "no town". It's not officially part of the game. It's pretty much player made rules where you can't use any merchants/cain/mercs/anything. You go to town to complete/get a quest, the end.

Makes it a lot more difficult. Though, you end up spending 1/2 the time frantically looking for potions.

Because it was ages ago the last time I played this game seriously I wondered if the skeletons are actually good now for the Necro? I've read that they updated the skill so that it's not completely useless compared to the eariler versions. And how's the Golem (any of them)?

I don't use golems anymore, the skellies do rather well up until hell.

They're separate executables (and obviously in a multiplayer game, things would be incompatible with other players), so no, you can't play with them unless everyone decides to use the vanilla game as well.

... actually, thinking back, the expansion might just install over the original game. You still have no way of playing with vanilla players, either way.

That's not exactly how it works. It's based on how your character was created (I'm assuming they just made an "expansion character" flag in their database). When you create your character, you check a box that says "expansion character" that will determine which version of the game you will play. If you don't check it, then it's a regular "vanilla" character.

Don't forget that when Blizzard and most other game companies release expansions, they also release a game-wide patch to coincide with the expansion that will also take into count the existence of the original players, creating prompts such as "cannot join this game, it is for expansion characters only." Thus, everyone uses the same "version" of the game, and I would assume same executable.
