If it's true I will shizzle my pants. Many people seem to believe him but man I don't know. It sounds to good to be true.
Hi I'm Thierry Nguyen and I am here with Chris Hartgraves who has kindly offered to give us a quick tour of Diablo 3.
Thierry: So let me start off asking you about the story and design for this new game. The trailer shown earlier shocked everyone as not only where the graphics top notch but the gameplay seems to have really improved. Can you talk about those areas?
Chris: Well what we wanted to do with Diablo 3 was create a living breathing life like world and in order to accomplish this we needed to expand our development studio. We now have over 5 times the amount of developers then we did when we worked on Diablo 2. In the last past two years we have been working on a new game engine that would fully utilize Directx 10 in Windows Vista and we are now able to have growing plant life, full destructible environments that also react with physics, volumetric cloud formations, ageing for NPC units, full day and night cycle that can even do complex weather patterns. For example if it snows out you will actually see the snow land on the ground and eventually the ground may be covered by a foot of snow. We have also worked on a new A.I system that allows A.I to do a lot more complex activities. You may see a farmer working his fields and going back and fourth and then later see the same guy in the local pub then the next day that same guy might be at Church.
As far as gameplay goes our development team has done a lot of amazing things. Though we don't want to talk about everything just yet I will give you a few examples. The game takes place mainly on Earth but the main story is that Diablo has raised an army in Hell and is trying to take over Heaven. Heaven of course attacks back and the main battlefield is on Earth. Diablo has a stronger army then Heaven's so you set out to save the day. We don't want to go to far into details but the story will be the most complex story we have ever done in a game. The game is massive and features a very open ended world and in order to get across this world you will be able to mount a horse if you decide. On the horse you are able to use weapons like swords and bows. The game will feature somewhere between 32 - 64 player support online or over LAN and each player will have the opportunity to purchase a horse. One of the features I like the most is that two people can't mount the same horse. One can be riding while the other can be on the back shooting off arrows at enemies. You can toggle between 3rd person and 1st person in the game and this allows the user to create the best possible game experience for themselves.
Another nice feature is sword fighting. Gone are the days of generic sword combat as now sword combat reacts with physics. If you hit the guys sword his hand is going to move back. If you push the guy with your shield if your strong enough you may send him flying backwards. The combat works with the physics engine and I promise you it's awesome. The world is big and we are focusing on making the best RPG of all time. We are aiming on having the game last about 150 hours or more and every NPC will talk much like in the previous Diablo games. The day and night system will work based on your clock. It will be a 24 hour system and will sync with your local weather. If it's sunny out then it will be sunny in the game. If it's raining or snowing then it will be raining or snowing in the game. We wanted to take gaming to the next level and that’s exactly what we are doing. There will also be mini games such as fishing and you can even fish from a boat. The game will consist of some huge battles and some small battles and dungeon exploration. There will be a lot of side quests for this game and we wanted to make this game appeal to a wide audience.
Thierry: Wow the game sounds and looks awesome. Is this a PC exclusive or is this also coming to any of the consoles?
Chris: We are looking to have this on a game console but have not decided on which one. This game will require a lot of horse power so we want to see what game console can deliver the most and so far that has not been fully determined.
Thierry: What did you think of the Revolution controller?
Chris: I have to give praise to Mr. Iwata as the controller really is a fun looking device. However that said we don't think you will ever see a Diablo 3 on the Revolution. Though the Revolution specs have not been revealed yet it is safe to assume that they will not be high enough to handle Diablo 3 the way that we are intending it to be. However you never know. We might make something for the Revolution to.
Thierry: When do you plan on revealing Diablo 3 to the public?
Chris: We are looking at unveiling it at E3 2006 but we have not decided how we are going to do that. We will most likely just show a trailer off.
Thierry: There is a rumor going around that Blizzard is in talks about doing an anime for Diablo with the same creator who created the popular anime Berserk. Is there any truth to that?
Chris: Blizzard does not comment of rumors and speculation. (Laughter)
Thierry: When will gamers be able to buy this game?
Chris: This is Blizzards most epic game yet and I am going to say don't expect it until at least 2008 at the earliest. Yes that’s a long time but I think gamers will be pretty pleased after they see why it will take so long. Diablo 3 will be a living breathing world where players will be able to join forces with other players and explore a huge land filled with evil and destruction. This fellowship must destroy the evil and save the Universe.
Thierry: We thank you for your time and we can't wait to see more of this game at E3.
