Did you suck when you were a noob?

We were all newbies to gaming once. Did you pick it up right away, or were you at the bottom of many ranked matches before you got familiar with gaming?

I've been playing games in various guises since I was tiny, so when I finally picked up online gaming I was at the top end within a few months. My first clan went on to win division 1 of the Barrysworld RA3 (Quake 3) league.
Ah, the glory days...long gone now. My obsession is motorcycles now, but I'm sure when the right game and community comes along it will reignite my passion for competitive gaming (although I'm more of a div2/3 player nowadays). I'm keeping my eye on UT2007 and Quake Wars...but I don't think either of them will top Quake 3.

Ranked matches?

When I was a noob, the only form of "ranking" was wiped when someone unplugged the game. Lol.

But yeah, sucking is pretty much what noobs do.

I've been playing online since Quakeworld, and I must say, I was OK at that game, from what I can remember. Boy, that was the shit. Playing the version *god I don't remember* where the axe was a hook, and you could fly around like that. Ohhh shit, was I proficient with it.

Hey, I'm no elitist. Well, only in the sense that I hate crappy n00b games like CS. I was just very passionate about competitive gaming. Actually I couldn't stand the Tribes community because it was populated by incredibly arrogant, hate-filled, horribly rude elitist ****s. Barely a decent person to be found.

Lol a crappy noob game? I honed my skills on that for years, it's one of the most skillful games out there and imo the best FPS their is for competitive gaming. As well as your individual skills you need team planning, positions set up, there are all sorts of tactics and what not.

No. I was ****ing brilliant at Medal of Honor, an M1 Garand in me hand man I was a predator!

I was good at HL2 Deathmatch for about 4 months, then I stopped playing and it wore off.

I'm still good at C&C Multiplayer (sort of), all single-player games (except horror ones, I freak out easily) and... uh... nothing else, really. Oh, Lan cafe games!

I honed my skills on Doom when I was but a child. I've never really sucked, and have always exploited a certain charm of being very sporney, getting fluke shots and turning games around being the last survivor etc.

The only game i've really sucked at online is Live for Speed - because I never played it with a wheel (mouse and keyboard to drive = lose) ... and that game is dominated by people with wheels that have played it religiously since it came out.

I was born with the ability to play Starcraft.

Nah, seriously, I sucked completely at Starcraft when it came out. Then my cousin "coached" me.

I've never been good at online play, from being a noob to now. My recent stints on the H3 beta have proved that.

HOWEVER, I don't get all pissed off when I get pasted online, I still enjoy it.

(Have to get a game of DooM on XBLA, Pobz :D)

When I had Counter-Strike 1.5 (which came with Opposing Force deathmatch, Team Fortress Classic, etc) I went onto italy and just wondered around for some time, not having a clue what to do.

When I had Counter-Strike: Source for the first time ever, I was shooting my own team mate.

You need all that for Quake 3 aswell...and the individual skill required is much, much higher. In fact TDM requires probably the most coordination and flawless teamwork of any gametype. Generally, the simpler a game is, the more complicated it is to play - complexity in online games more often than not replaces creativity and innovation with a set way of doing things that is superior to all other options.
There are so many different and equally valid ways to play TDM, but one game of Team Fortress doesn't differ that much from another. There are only one or two valid strategies and team setups.

First game I ever played was mario....and i owned
First online game was probably Doom, and I would say I was decent. It wasnt until I started playing Call of Duty that I started playing in clans and what not.

I don't play online much, when I do I usually suprise myself with how well I do. The first time I played multiplayer though. It was a CS LAN game. Me and about 7 other terrorists got our asses handed to us by 2 CTs.

Was I the only person who hated playing games against friends and what not, because when you did, you would rape them hardcore, and they would get pissed and quit?

That is what my High School years comprised of. Was depressing. I had to stop playing good now and then so I could actually have a little bit of fun.

ya, good point. Only a few of my friends actually played and none of them were any good. noobs

Yeah I sucked when I was a newb....I still suck :( *cries in a corner*

I remember playing one of my friends in Ice Hockey for NES. I whooped him so bad (I didn't own an NES at the time and it was one of my first times ever playing it). He got really pissed and yanked his controller back, pulling his NES off the tv stand damaging his NES.

It still worked...kinda. It could play games, but in black and white and with lots of distortion.

I owned at Mario, Tetris and Duck Hunt, my first games. First online game besides Doom Coop was Quake and I was pretty good at that (even though at the time I used the old arrow keys to move, alt + arrows to strafe, A+Z to look up and down, etc). I didn't even contemplate using the mouse to look :P

I used the mouse/keyboard first when Quake came out. For DukeNukem/Doom/etc I used just keyboard. I can't do that anymore :(

Indeed! My first multiplayer experiences involved dialing directly into my friend's computer for some DOOM deathmatches (DOOM 1 that is!). We also got into playing Duke Nukem against eachother too after we got bored of DOOM.

I dominated everything i came across the moment i got internet.

Battlefield 1942...simple point and click interface...sure, it took me a while...certainly the fact I played it for almost a year before I got internet on my personal PC helped with my skills, since I was constantly fighting bots...

I think Im doing better nowadays...

Pfft, It would be more skillful if the ball was standing on the cat!

Ive been playing online since the first Delta Force game. I pretty much pwned at it after a week, and have been pwning ever since.

Ah yes Delta force, one of my favorite oldies. Too bad Novalogic upgraded the damn graphics at a snail's pace :(

The first PC game I ever played was Blood, and I used only the keyboard, now I have no idea how the heck I could do that in a FPS. I started using the mouse keyboard combo in Quake2.
I haven't played online much, more LAN with friends. In LAN I've played Q2,Q3,RA2,C&C Generals, UT; and I've played moderately well. Two of my friends are very good players so there was never the problem of beating the crap out of em in a game and then not having anyone to play with.

+1, eh?

Is it just me, or was the track and field game for the NES the most badass thing to do with your friends back in the day?

They always cheated on the running portions. Some would just pound on the pad with their hands and let go for the long jump only to slap their hands for the landing - while others would just run and then jump off to the side of the pad, and hop back on for the landing.

Cheaters :P

Assholes, I played it for real :(
