Hi, this is another "I want to buy a new computer and I'm looking for advices" thread. So this is what I want:

Code:
ANTEC SX1040BII ANTEC SX1040BII BLACK 400W $153.67
ASUS NC-AS-A8N-SLI ASUS A8N-SLI NFORCE4 S939 $209.44
CHAINTECH SE6600G CHAINTECH GF6600GT 256MB PCI EXPRESS $290.54
SEAGATE ST380817AS SEAGATE BARRACUDA 80GB 7200RPM SATA 8MB NCQ $81.58
SEAGATE ST380817AS SEAGATE BARRACUDA 80GB 7200RPM SATA 8MB NCQ $81.58
(RAID 0)
SONY FD-M1443W/BK 3.5 Disks $14.99
CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200C2 $187.62
ATHLON 64 3500 2.2GHZ 1MB S939 Winchester $374.42
------------------------------------------------------------------------
								$1393.84

Of course I want some advices about this whole rig in general but I particularly need to know the difference between the ClawHammer and Winchester CPU. I want to build a gaming system so wich one would be best? They are both the same price but the ClawHammer is 512K and the Winchester is 1MB. I also guess the ClawHammer is 130nm and Winchester is 90nm. But in real world, in term of games performances, what does it means?

Oh and don't bother with the prices, it's CAN dollars in a town you've never heard of :)

Also, i'm not sure about putting those 2 SEAGATE in RAID 0, I guess It would be better to buy one Raptor?

I think the winchester is better, i might be wrong though.

And you're hard drives might hold you back
Id go for 10,000rpm drives :/

it's quite obvious that the winchester is superior to the ClawHammer
double the L2 cache makes a big difference

The winchester will require less power and thus run at a lower voltage and it will run cooler. It would be the better of the 2 chips, although the difference between them, performance wise, will be very small. The difference between the 2 3500+ chips is very small, not significant to notice in gaming or general apps.

Ok thanks alot, I'm still waiting to see if Asus has something to say :)

There shouldn't be any difference between any 3500+ model except if it's 90nm or 130nm. L2 cache should be 512kb. I bet they have it listed wrong. Example:
Newcastle
Winchester
Clawhammer

Did you have link to the site or a model number (example: ADA3500DEP4AW)?

I'm actually confused why the 3500+ is considered a Clawhammer though. I thought they were just Newcastle and Winchester. Anyway...

Performance will be a little better on the Winchester version out of the box. OCing will be a lot better! with the Winchester. Temp. and power used will be a lot lower with the Winchester.

The winchester has a limit to how fast it can go, i'm not sure what it is. The venice will fix that. The clawhammer still has to be used on the high end processors until the newer 90nm cores come out.

The 90nm will mean much better overclockability, the Clawhammer is good but it is based around an older design process and won't have as much headroom. If you don't care about overclocking, the difference between the two would not be noticable in 99% of the software, the other 1% probably favouring either of the chips. If you do care about overclocking, the Winchester is the better option.

Thanks alot that's exactly what I wanted to know! I do care about overclocking so I guess I'll go with the Winchester. I'll give you the model number tonight just to be sure I'm not confusing two CPU type. Also, if I plan to overclock a little, should I buy another fan or will it still be alright? I guess I'll try it with a moderate overclock and see what temps I get.

Thanks again!

nope, winchester 3500+ dont have 1MB , they have 512KB L2 cache, and yes take winnie.
4000+ have 1MB, and new san-diego will have 1MB.

for cooling go for ThermalRight XP-90 ( it has best temp on air) and put some fan on it, if you like silent take Vantec SF9225L Stealth 92mm fan . but it will cool on eny fan.

for disk i suggest new Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 NCQ 250GB it can compare to fast raptor one, and it is better value.

for gfx, i recomend HIS ati x800 XL or nvidia 6800 GT .

and good luck intaling it , good buy overall, it will fly ;)
