It's squishies the screen.
I don't like it.

The characters appear thinner on my screen.
Maybe it's my imagination but that's what i see.

I don't like the 90 degree one either... you feel a bit more removed... kinda hard to explain.

I do play in widescreen resolution 1680x1050 normally though if that even makes a difference.

if its squished then your resolution is messed up. fov just changes well your viewing span.

That's what I was thinking. I only play on 1024x768, since anything higher my computer starts overheating... \= I play with 80, just so I can see more.

How do you change this? Is it 70 as default?

75 is the default. When you hit escape -> Options -> Multiplayer, in there is the FOV selection. It's a slider you can select whatever you feel is needed.

Just seen the news post regarding the changes. Cool :)

All games should be @ 90 I have no idea why valve picks 75, remember when HL2 first came out and after playing for a hour or so many people were feeling sick 75 fov was the reason.

Hey, i found some strange thing. On 1st screen crosshair is orange and on 2nd white.
Hm what it could be :?

In one he's aiming at someone, and in the other he isn't.

I'm too used to 70. :p

i always felt it was too tight, going to try 90 or 80 and see how my head explodes

Well technically, doesn't a wider FOV provide more viewing space, aka, an "advantage?" I can't see anyone arguing that 70 or 75 is more realistic, because in real life you have a really wide field of view from your head, no? Peripherals ftw.

If anything i get more bausea from the 90 degree fov, also the game seems slower in that fov.

Must admit though i did also have some nausea doing HL2 gameplay with the vehicle and the airboat, but nothing compared to TF2 with 90 degree fov.

90 reminds me of those awful quake3 videos where people fly at 600mph with fisheye view shooting a gazillion rockets per second. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

Fisheye only happens around 120 I believe. 90 is the default for most FPS games. I personally love 90 over 75, it feels so much nicer to my eyes and moving around :)

it's nice to see valve add these things so easily and quickly while it's still in the beta stage.

unlike one crazy screw-up in Bioshock. They are still yet to release the patch to allow widescreen users to change the fov from 75ish to 90. (let alone any patch at all) Personally as a 4:3 gamer at the moment, i'm lucky in that it doesn't bother me, but i can very much see how it could bother a widescreen user.

Great work valve

Personally, I always play at 180 FOV, and anyone who plays at less is a lamer in my eyes.

True, I got it all on. Would it change if I had lower settings?
Yes. AA and filtering are the bigger resource hogs.

Your 'eyes' have a 180 degree field of view, everyone you see probably looks like a lamer.

75 is actually a more accurate and natural fov compared to our own vision. And you've got it the wrong way around, people got motion sickness at 90 fov - and iirc it was alot to do with vehicles. That info is in raising the bar anyway...

Hm its interesting...
75 white crosshair
90 orange crosshair
Valve is strange company :p

Most games from way back always used 90 fov not 75 when dev's went to 75 people got sick.

Like someone else said, the human eye has a field of view of close to 180 degrees. Depth perception is another thing. For games to have a wider field of view, they must also stretch the perceived depth of the 3D world because they cannot expand your flat, fixed monitor! It's the only way to incorporate more of the world into your fixed view area.

if your screen was a "window" into a 3d world, it would be more like 50 deg

I like the knew fov. I think its 90 right.

I assume this also comes at the cost of framerate? I'd like an increased FOV, but I'm skimping by at the low-end settings as it is.

Also, does this scale to the sniper scope as well? Would applying an increased FOV also increase the size of the sniper's scoped view?
