Hey I hope someone here can help me with this since I really don't feel like registering somewhere else just to ask a basic question.

Anyway, I live with my fiance now, so I set up two different user accounts on our PC. However, we can't get different desktops on each account... I thought this was one of the basic reasons for having different user accounts.. Does anyone know how I can set it up to have different desktops for each of us?

Thanks.

Well, you each have to log into your different accounts to get the custom desktops.

As long as their 2 seperate accounts the desktops will be different. When you first created hers, it might have resembled yours, but any changes she makes to the desktop wont carry over to you.

This is noub question, but did u log onto her account? Or did u accidenatlyl log onto yours again?

If it's Windows 98 or ME then you can't have different desktops. Accounts share the same info. With Windows XP you should be able to log into different accounts and set different wallpapers etc.

I haven't used 98 for so long. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.
But if you have Windows XP you should be able to do it.

If you change the wallpaper in one account does the other one change too? What is the issue exactly?

For sure not in XP. I set up my cousins computer(which I gave them to replace there SUPER crappy computer. I got it free anyway). Gave them all there own accounts, and they all have there own background.

It should be able to be done for 98 to. Havn't worked with 98 for a while but yeah..should be possible.

In XP, seperate accounts have unique of the following:
Internet Explorer Favorites
Internet Explorer History
Desktop Icons
Desktop Background
Cookies
Start Menu
Temporary Internet Files
My Pictures
My Music
and probably some more stuff

Naw it's wierd, we've tried it both ways. Whenever one of us changes the wallpaper, it changes for both. There must be a setting somewhere that I can't find.

The EXTREME solution would be to set up two completely separate Windows installations... but I doubt you're EXTREME enough to do that.

I just found this out if your using 98 or 95:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Passwords, and then click the User Profiles tab.
2. Click Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Select the options that you want under User profile settings, and then click OK.
3. Shut down and restart the computer.
Check out this page for more info if you need it: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win98/reskit/part2/wrkc07.mspx

XP shouldent have any kind of problem though.

That's actually how I had it set up on my last computer, but this one doesn't have two harddrives, so I don't think that's an option. I'm using XP w/SP 2 btw. It's wierd.. this should be so simple.
