I downloaded cs: s and all that, played the game successfully but one thing, when i go to the advanced video options, it says the directx level is 8 and that i have directx9 installed, i habe a gffx 5600 256mb, i know its a crappy card, that i have to get a new one and all that crap, but for now, is there any way to chage it to level 9? i also know that it will slow down my framerates, but is there a way to do such thing? thx

dx level is your hardware, you can do nothing about it (except buy new hardware)

dx instaled is the software version you have downloaded and installed from the microsoft website. The lastest version is 9.0c

Yes, but his objection is that the 5600 is a dx9 capable card. I think what's going on here is that the 5600's dx9 performanc is so dismal, Valve has it revert to dx8.

I think there is a paramter you can add to the hl2.exe's shortcut to fix that ... not sure.

yeah but i have a 5950 ultra...dont tell me thats not dx9. its the rival to the 9800xt. i have 9c installed and it says installed dx=9. current dx 8.1

That probably because Valve has some default settings that but the FX series of nvidia cards to dx 8. The FX series has poor dx 9 performance as we should all know by now.

Yeah, I have this too, I rather see the quality with less frames...

EDIT: -dxlevel 90 <---- tested that... went from (70-130 FPS) on dx8.1 to (20-50 FPS) on dx9

>-- look at my sig for system info

The graphics only looked slightly different, the reflection where just more intense... it really looked like the same effect for both. in the video system test *thingy, Everything sort of looked dx9 quality, in 8.1.

>> dx9 on dx9 for video stress test, got me 20 fps, instead of 51 on dx8 >> water failed to load for me for that.

ok i get really REALLY crappy fps with dx level 90, i'm sticking with 80, i get around 60 - 70 fps with it, and the only changes from 80 to 90 are the slightly higher bump maps and reflection (omg that deagle reflection aaaah) well, i'll stay with dx level 80 until i get my 9800pro =D
