So i just got this game and got my mind blown into thousand pieces. This game is simply amazing. The graphics are better than Dirt 1 and Grid, and suprisingly performs BETTER than them. The racing is very intense and adrenaline rushing. They also did a great job on the menus and the overall progression of the game as you play through it.

Loved it so much i threw together a quick video.

Never bought the game, but I played the hell out of the Dirt 1 demo. Had competitions with my brother on how fast we could get around the Germany track in the Subaru. Fastest I got on the first lap was 1 minute, 5 seconds and 93 split seconds, he never beat it. Played the Dirt 2 demo and it was great, but will probably buy it when I have nothing to do and whens its really cheap.

Not that new actually, running on an 8800GTX, 2gb ram, AMD Athlon Dual Core 3.0ghz. It runs great!

I've been looking for an ace racing game for a while now for my 360, and this do look pretty epic, will have to look into it.

This looks rad, however Rise Against makes me wish I had a power drill so I could put it in my ears.

The graphics are insane. I went from playing Dirt 2 to NFS Shift and It made the shift graphics seem pretty bad. Definitely the most fun I've had playing a racing game in quite some time. I just don't enjoy the sim games like Forza that much.

Every game in this thread focuses on flashy graphics rather than realistic physics. You want a real racing game, you get Grand Prix Legends. Based on the 1967 F1 season, it's the most unforgiving and challenging racing game you'll ever play, and, along with NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, the most realistic. It was made in 1998 and is still vastly better than what we get today.

Actually every game in this thread focuses on the game the thread is about, DiRT 2, hence all the talk about DiRT2 and not other racing games. As for GPL, when I play a game I don't want it to be unforgiving, I want it to be fun.

Are the cars destructible?

Yes.

DiRT 2, NFS: Shift and GT3 A-Spec have all been mentioned and they all look flashy and drive badly (GT3 not so much, admittedly). I would argue that finally learning how to drive well in a Formula One car with 400hp and no downforce is more fun than a 2 minute race in an arcade racer.

I love arcade racing games, nothing better when you just want a simple game you can pick up and play, and enjoy, but none of them are at the top end of the racing genre.

I would have to disagree with you, I get more fun from throwing a rally car around a hair pin with a perfect handbrake turn than I ever would having to crash and restart god knows how many times because the game is so "unforgiving" I have to drive perfectly every time. or restart the race.

It all depends on realism vs. flavor. Many people start off with arcade-type games, but eventually it gets boring, they're all the same, give you mary-sue level abilities in cars, combat ability, or aviation. Eventually you want something that takes more skill to do; hence why I love simulators like FSX, Il-2, and stuff like ArmA(with good mods). Grand strategy games(not Total War, but Paradox games) eat up a lot of my time, but even now sometimes I'll go back to simpler strategy.

All depends on the level of the player and how intellectually challenged they wish to be.

I prefer to actually racing other drivers though, gives everything a competitive edge, especially when you are online against other human players, even more so, if those players are your friends.

I am all for realistic driving simulators, they can be very fun, but at the moment I am looking for a furious, fast-paced cruncher of a facing game, with crashes, and car ramming etc. Dirt 2 seems to be doing that the best at the moment from reviews I have read.

hmm...

and that fact that damage now has very little influence on the game, with drivers receiving a brand new car for each race

I got GRID for 5 euros in a Steam sale the other week and it's one of the slickest, most fun games I've ever played. Like GRID, the DiRT series is developed by Codemasters and uses the same game engine, so I'd expect it to play similarly and be just as enjoyable. I'm not quite as drawn to the off-road, grungy americana flavour of DiRT as I am to the diversity of GRID though...

As for the realism vs. arcade debate: I don't know about DiRT, but in GRID, once you turn off the driving assists and up the difficulty, the last thing you can call it is 'forgiving' or 'accessible'. I play on the second highest difficulty, aided by a couple of driving assists like traction control, and it's still very easy to throw away the entire race on one whiffed corner. Sure, you don't get flagged for dangerous driving or anything like that, but that's part of the appeal...

I have this game and have yet to open it for the 360. i told my friend i was gunna sell it to him but we've both been busy

GOOD?

This is one of the shittiest racing games I've played in my life(the demo atleast).
NFS Shift/GRID are much better imo

I got this game a few days ago and i'm totally hooked to it. It's the best racing game i've played in a long time. The only negative i can think of is that the car damage sucks in this compared to Grid.

ya tis an awesome game

played the shit out of it on my 360
might even pick it up on PC somewhere down the line once I've upgraded my system

Have you tried Race Driver 3?

Just as bad... All those 'games' are simply that, to make you feel like a pro rally/racing driver with a flick of the control stick and not much thought.

Sims like GPL, Nascar, Live For Speed, GTR Evo, Richard Burns Rally, are the closest you'll get to really feeling like a racing/rally driver. The satisfaction and fun comes from mastering driving a vehicle on the limit - which is more of a rush than any bloom/hdr riddled game could ever do.

The difference between a racing game and a sim is like having auto targeting in a FPS on or off - how many would actually say its fun to use such an easy mode in a shooter?

But whatever, there's room for both types to exist.

I have to say, this is definitely the best racer Ive ever played.

I went and used the Subaru Impreza WRX for pretty much all the races that werent trailblazers.

I was a little dissapointed that you dont get extra cash/xp for driving only in the cockpit view, like they did in GRID.

However, sitting in the cockpit view and doing the perfect drift/slide around a hairpin, sun setting in the background and you hit a puddle and the windscreen gets covered in, frankly, THE most realistic water Ive ever seen in a game, and how the windscreen wipers dont quite clear it all off at first making it hard to see, is quite a euphoric driving moment.

Yeah, this game is awesome.

And the progress is great too. And the menu is the best in any game ever made. And..and..*explodes*

9.9/10

I want COMPLETE choice on my paintjobs and vinyls, not ones the devs have thrown together. Some are cool, but you basically stick with the same one the whole game.

On that note, Shoei was the best.

That crash was pretty ****ing epic lol.

I think we're talking about two different games here.

TOCA has all sorts of realism settings and ways to make it especially difficult. It also has one of the more unforgiving damage models I've tried.

My point was whether Chilifan had considered it when he said that no games in recent years were sim-like enough.

I've been playing the demo ALOT. No new games until after Christmas, but this is at the top of the list.

On harder modes, it's ridiculous to get a top place. I was getting times of about 3:15 in the demo sprint race, beating the AI by about 15-30 seconds, getting pretty close to perfect runs, so decided to go to the hardest difficulty. Somehow I need to shave a further 15 seconds off my race time.

Likes:
Graphics
handeling (The car feels like it has weight to it, it's a balance between arcade and sim).
Races themselves seem nicely laid out and with variety.

Dislikes:
Car damage doesn't do much. I mean, I bent the frame on my car once, and it pulled to the left, but unless you total it, it doesn't seem to effect how it drives really.
