How can I disable the background scene in the main menu (therefore making the game start quicker) in Half-Life 2: Episode One?

The -console launch option works, but it shows the console when the game starts which is annoying. +map_background none worked for Half-Life 2, but isn't for Episode One :/

Disabling the background scene to make the game start faster?
It's irritating when the console opens at the start?

Common, man, don't be so picky about stuff. Besides, I seriously doubt that disabling the title background somehow would make the game start up quicker.

It has to load a 3d scene into RAM, and that takes longer than just loading up a black screen.

It has to load a 3D scene just for the menu background so yes, it does.

Speeding Up Startup Time

While this is covered under the relevant command variable in the Advanced Tweaking section, I thought I'd spell this one out here for those that may have missed it. You can speed up the time it takes to load to the Half Life 2 menu by adding the following command to the end of your Half Life 2 icon's Target box under its properties, or to the Launch Options box under Steam (See the Advanced Tweaking section for details):

+map_background none

This command prevents the loading up of the 3D animated background which sits behind the startup menu. Instead the game will load much more quickly with just a blurry color background. If you want to start the game with the console open instead, substitute the -console command in place of +map_background none above.

If you want to further speed up your startup time, also add the -novid switch in Half Life 2 icon's Target box or the the Steam Launch Options box. Having done this, the game should now skip playing the Valve animation at the start of the loading process, speeding up startup time even further.
