Discuss GT4 here

I don't think there is a way to change it. In other games I have seen codes released that will allow you to change that.

At first it threw me also. Once you play the game for a few hours you get used to it.

I use the 3rd person view when I am comfortable with the car.

If I am having trouble with unfamiliar characteristics of some of the cars I use 1st person view

I have no complaints after getting used to it. this game rrooox

I believe they had to raise the camera higher up slightly becuase of a technique they used for shadows. If the camera was too low, these kind of shadows would appear to float above it's suface. Im not sure if this has anything to do with the 3rd person view though.

On another note, turning the driving aids off in the car settings was the biggest thing. Driving aids are stupid. I can uderstand maybe if you just don't get the concept of pressing the x button lightly , to use some traction controll, but oversteer and understeer computer aids is really stupid. it applys the breaks to certain wheels. I turn all 3 driving aids to 0 (off) on all the cars I drive.

One thing cool is I noticed all the good cars you can win seem to be set up perfectly already, this should be good for everybody.

I'm always used to racing in the cockpit (or bonnet) view, it just seems easier to find the racing line, not having to judge the direction of the car (which you do if you're looking through a camera that isn't parallel to the car).

I've not found a racing/driving game yet that doesnt support this view, which is nice.

I use the inside view as well. I was playing around with photo mode today and took a few pics.

My 999HP Mercedes SL 65

Mmmmmm....Shelby Mustang.

I spent a ton of cash to get that damn thing. I had to buy a 510,000 Shelby Cobra, pimp it out and race it. Ran me about 700,000.

EDIT: I found a simple way to make tons of cash pretty fast. I'm talking 400,000 in like 30 minutes if you have a car good enough.

EDIT2: Weird, my 2nd Shelby pic looks terrible by the window. Everything else looks badass :)

Nice, I like my cadilac with > 1000 HP it spins tires untill 4 th gear. and My skyline nur m spec II.

I haven't played with the photo mode yet .. (boots it up) how the heck did you get the pictures onto your computer?

I have a digital camera with a 512mb card in it. I hooked it to the ps2 with a USB and instead of saving to the mem card I saved to, "USB Storage Device" - Hooked my camera to my computer and there was a GT4 folder with my pics.

Ive got a USB video digital camcorder. I could record live fotage maybe
woot. It also takes stills

ok I'll mess with it thanks!

How did you get your Cadillac above 1000 HP? I have the Cadillac CEIN and I'm pretty sure it's the only caddy in the game. Max I can get mine to is 974.

Nm. I got it to 1023HP :P

So why should I buy this game apart from the more/cars/tracks/upgrades?

Can you bang into other cars sending them off their racing line, or do they still not react at all?
Do they see you coming and sometimes try and block you?
Do they all still stick to their racing line?
Does it still have the annoying catch-up meaning that you can't get more than a certain distance away from the person in 2nd place?

AI is still pretty lame but the game is solid still to me.

Awwww... After speed testing my Mercedes and the Cadillac, my Mercedes is 20mph slower than the Cadillac

I think i'll get it anyway, I have a spare monitor to hook my PS2 up to, and i've not bought a PS2 game in over a year, eek.

I haven't tried 2 player yet, I remember they had "catch-up" in older version/s of GT but it could be turned off.

Yes, you can bang into other cars sending them off thier racing line.

I call this bumpercars, its still the easiest way to win races when your car is underpowered, or you are just cut-throat.

There is a blur effect upon collisions if you use the first person view.
There is no visable damage or damage special effects other than that.

They all stick to the same racing line, they may attempt to pass other cars.
rarely they may make an error and go off the track

In some races it's very close, tooth-and-nail all the way to the finish. The AI is good in this respect, some races are more challenging than others.

They do see you if you are in front of them, they rarely run into your rear, they will hit the breaks or try to go around.

Here's the games only flaw:

If you are side-by-side with them, and you are in the racing line, most of the time they will try to occupy the same space as you, which is impossible, so its like they keep pushing into you, either you can't be moved or you go in the grass. This is the only problem with the AI, and it's such a big flaw.

IF they had fixed this Im sure the game would have scored a 10 in everyones book
It's forgiveable this time, because of all the billions of other improvements, but GT5 had better be fixed finally.

Holy ****ing shit batman. :smoking:

to compete in the convertible/roadster competition I spend 400,000 on a Dodge VIPER SRT10 '03 with all the upgrades.
its black. its bad.

I felt like I was really driving it, this thing is a ****ing monster! I hit the nitros and light up the tires in 6th gear!

Lets see you're little convertable gay box miata do that shit!

(have to turn NOS down or get race tires)
its like warp speed captain.

I highly recommend it

I love how whenever you buy upgrades, and win cars it almost always sets them up perfectly. It's idiot proof!

Next Im going to sweep the professional Naturaly Aspirated (NA) series races

Youdonotbelonghere you Need to get this game dude.

Once you get used to the camera (just like any racing game) you will love 3rd person view so much.

This is the best racing game available to the public on earth.

VirusType2, what % completion are you up to? I have only 14% right now. Working on getting all beginner and professional races done, then I'm gonna get iA license when I need to.

What kind of car do you have in real life? I'm just curious from your post before about how you have the equivalent of a stage 2 weight reduction on your post.... because I'm looking to do something like that to my badass '98 pontiac sunfire.... ;)

>AmishSlayer
Not sure %. a little less than you probably. I'm just starting to clear out professional, but I cleared most of the Rally tracks.
---------------
Ive got a 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T (Turbo) 5 speed
They race these cars, there is more than a few of them at just under 1000 HP with NOS

Mine has under 300 HP at this time (work in progress) but I've taken a shit load of weight out of the car, basically EVERYTHING that isn't necessary. It's excessive really. The thing is though, with it being so light, it accelerates as fast as cars with about 450 HP, becuase they have full stock weight, and most of the time, with that much power, they are heavier cars, with heavier engines (V8's) and often they have less gears (automatics)

My friend has a >600 HP Eclipse GS-X (all wheel drive turbo)
she has spent alot of money on that car.

Mostly, Turbo cars are much cheaper to make faster, you can throw a couple of bolt on mods and double your power without even touching the engine.

All wheel drive is useless unless you have that much HP, it reduces power to the wheels by 20% and makes it want to go straight (massive understeer) But with high power it is necessary for traction.

I'll probably settle around 400-500 HP, as it is already an absolute blast to drive, especially on the back-roads.

It's not really street legal, but it passes emissions, so It's no prob.

Really the only cops that give a shit are the state troopers, so I just stay off the interstate highways

I got 2 tickets for my exhuast in 2 months, thats when I decided to stay off the highway.

If I need to, I'll just buy another car for commuting or whatever.

The car is fast as hell. I've never been beat on the streets

I was in an online car club for a while and thats an limitless resource for learning.

EDIT: By the way I did all the work to my car except the clutch.

With my tax return $1000 I may get this new body kit that just came out. its absolutely bad-ass. But I also want a gamer PC ;(

It's meticulously maintained and garaged.
It has:

ACT 2600 lb. race clutch with semi-race disc
Upper/Lower Intercooler Pipes
Greddy Type-S Blow-off valve
Turbo XS boost controller
Apex-i Boost gauge
Eagle Alloy wheels
K&N aircharger
Thermal R&D 3.5" catback exhaust
Magnacore race wires
Pro-Slot rotors
EBC green type brake pads
Tokico Illumina struts
Eibach pro kit lowering springs
Carbon Fiber Hood
Race Seat
Tons of mods and tweaks

Thats most of them!

Vice City??

This is Gran Tourismo 4 discussion.

He was asking me details on my car in real life

By the way AmishSlayer,
I do not recommend messing with your car.

Depending on what state you live in, you can't upgrade the exhaust,
then there is not much more power you can get without more air coming in and exhuast going out.

Tuning cars is Alot of headaches. You will be seriously lowering the cars reliability.
You will void your warantee, if you still owe money for the car, you won't be allowed to tamper with it legaly, the bank where you got your car loan is not havin it

Most people end up with a really annoying sounding car that attracts cops like a magnet and actually has less lower end (normal driving) power

You won't be able to get much more power from your engine without Turbo charging it (very expensive), supercharging it(expensive), or NOS (illegal and only works if you press the button)

If you want a faster car the only option you really have is to buy a faster car.

Fast cars get old quick, and they are a fuzz magnet, there is really no place for it on the street, I rarely get the oportunity (maybe once every few times I drive) to give it a long, high RPM pull in 2nd gear, becuase anything in 3rd gear is Reckless speeding

If you want bang for the buck, let me suggest American
Viper/Mustang/Pontiac/corvette

Heh, I was totally kidding about doing anything to my sunfire except maybe destroying it myself and collecting insurance. Sunfire's suck... :frown:

EDIT: Uhh...those are horrible pictures of the game. They all look low-res and blurry.

EDIT2: Try THIS on for size. That's a picture I took of my Shelby in photo mode. Not doctored in any way.

Hmm..... have you lot bought a different game to me, because imo the graphics are hardly amazing. Tbh Project Gothem 2 wipes the floor with them. Instead of looking at the screen shots taken and photoshoped up why not look at actual ingame screen shots for once:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/driving/granturismo4/screens_6118988.html?page=58

Project Gothem 2:

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/driving/projectgothamracing2/screens.html?page=209

Thats a horrible pic of GT.

Project Gotham 2? Dont waste my time it's not in the same league and it hardly looks great itself

EDIT: One thing you got to know, there are 100 tracks. some of the tracks are all the way from GT1. The new tracks are really really nice, with graphics like AmishSlayer's car pics. Some of the Original GT1 tracks are not all new and shiney. Just a little better than GT3
EDIT2: The original GT3 tracks haev been upgraded with better textures, especially the grass, it looks awesome, the wireframe models of the tracks are more detailed with perfectly rounded curves etc. The new tracks have textures with detail equivalent to Half-Life2 maybe better. Just look at Slayers pix. thats what they look like

*Note I own a VGA adapter for my PS2 is hooked up to a PC monitor.
*Your results may vary

Hey I just found out they have a better turbo than level 4 for my car, and better suspesion than racing suspension

They are a little cheaper, and a little better, make sure you check the tuner village before going to your car manufacturer!!!

I think they had to drop the heat wave effects and the sparks from under the car when your car bottoms out in order to have more memory available for the improved car and track models and improved textures.

I suspect when the playstation 3 comes out they will release GT5 and they will be able to put those effects back in

Hey dude, do you think it would be possible to connect the PS2 directly to my PC with a USB cord and save pix to my HardDrive???!

I'm going to try it, but I'll have to wait a few days to buy a USB cord, its snowing like 7 inches here

EDIT: I have a shit-load of cars now, just got an old NSX Type S Zero in order to win the 90's production car races, the handling is wonderfull.

what muscle car do u guys recomend...i dont know too much about them

i was planning to get the dodge charger and use it on the american races and the old school races

EDIT: or should i save up for that shelby cobra and would this car work in the muscle car race?

(i whish they had a shelby gt 500 in this game, that would have been sweet) but the 350 looks nice also

holy shiz, if this is a spoiler to some about the endurance race

24 hours nurunbuerg (however you spell it) race in the endurance hall

The game still runs on transparent textured wheeels and still has the same AI from the original... 1 was amazing, 2 was addictive, 3 was just the same.... lets not comment on 4 :P

Its impossible for any ps2 game to run on anything higher than a 512x512 texture (I think it is anyway, I could be wrong). The ps2 can not handle high polgon detail compared to other machines such as gamecube and xbox, just look at the polgon coutns for Resident Evil 4. They are almost 1/2 the size of the Gamecube version. I am not here to go all anti PS2, but when everyone rates the game as been the most photorealistic around its just a simple fact thats its not. I am so anti ps2 and gt because:

1. People bum out ps2 from promo pictures of games way to much, infact in general it happens all over the place.
2. gt imo has never really do anything different, all it does is have a name and a simple concept. They continue to pump out the same game over and over again without making sutile changes as upgrading the AI.

anyway, if u like the game you do, if you don't you don't. I will buy it for my psp because its just something you can play and although its one of those games you don't really enjoy you get a lot of enjoyment about buying the best cars. Infact the best way to compare this game would be to Armored Core.

Racing = Boring and teadious
Buying new cars and upgrading them = kewl

There is no denying the fact that the Xbox has better graphics capabilities I'm not sure what you are talking about the wheels, they look great to me. :rolling:

There is no perfect game, You can go through the lists of your favorite games, Every one of them had that 1 flaw, that 1 thing missing, and if you find the perfect game, you let me know becuase I'm stuck with imperfect games like HL2, D3, GT4, and MOH

The game runs with an extremly high frame rate, and has the best car phsyics I have ever experienced, has alot of bonuses, and Is fun as hell. Some tracks look fantastic, some don't. but there is 100 of them to choose from.

I bought the game feb 23 and I have played it non-stop, and I'm about to go play it now. The game is a dozen years of hard work.

and you have to put in some work to get some good cars and then you can have a blast driving them whenver you want, buying anything you want, racing your friends

There is only 3 games I enjoy in the world right now and this is one of them, so I think that says something, I've been been hooked since they invented video games and have played 1000's of games

Its a game that has replay for years.

But what other alternative do you have? Project gotham2? you wouldn't even be discussing this if you wanted to play PG2, that game is shallow and lacking.

Ill admit sometimes you have to race the 120 HP cars if you want to progress in the game, that can be tedious, but 95% of the time you get to drive your best cars, I just cant stress enough how much of a blast it is to drive a 1000+ roadster like the viper with a perfect set-up, the game engine is so much faster than I remembered and Its intense and fun when you get a straight away, the NOS completely Owns it has enough charge to last the whole race when used on the straights. there are tons of new race cars and newer cars that weren't even invented in time for the other versions of GT.

Don't get it if you don't want to. lol

Project gotham 2 as a good mix of speed and arcade style driving mixed into a realistic feel. The xbox live feature made the game really run to play and imo it comes way ahead of any of the gt games. Although the graphics are a little crappy now they picked up from a lot of anoying mistages from the original on the dreamcast. Compared to GT, PR has done a lot more and listened to its community, all GT do is add new vehicles and don't even fully remake old tracks. Look at Ridge Racer on the psp, thats an amazing racing game because they got all of there other titles and put them into one package, it has about 100 cars with unique driving styles offering for all types of players and has the original style of ridge racer which everyone knows was the original drifter. I am kinda rambling on, but compared to other racing games GT has just been totally owned. But look at features and gameplay of both the Ridge racer series and Metropilas/Project gothem Racing and you will realise how pathetic GT is.

Oh and btw what I mean by textured wheels is the fact they are not 3d models, the wheel its self is 3d. but the rim is a texture which changes with speed.

Gran Tourismo 4 has pushed the PS2 to it's max. the best the playstation can do. I was surprized that the PS2 can look this good though after it is the most underpowerd console, but of course I'm looking forward to GT 5

I used to like ridge racer it was fun, but after GT 1 playing ridge racer was completely unrealistic, I don't have a PSP but I'm sure it's always fun when you get to play a good game on a little screen, its a novelty and its really cool, but thats not me, I'm not interested in that.

games take ALOT of work to make.

Games like GT and burnout 3 went in different directions, Burnout spent all of its hardwork on the graphics and crashes, but the game is just plain stupid. After about 5 minutes of that rediculous thing they call driving a car, I was like ok, I don't want to play this again. So you can see which direction is more important.

I would say that Ridge Racer and Project Gotham are somewhere in between, but to me they aren't worth my time becuase after having the opportunity to play Gran Tourismo 4, there is no point in wasting my time playing any other racing game, I just wouldn't enjoy it for more than a couple hours if I had never played them before. the driving is less realistic, and the whole point of these types of driving games is to be as realistic as posible (excluding Burnout 3)

Everyone has different taste in games, it's like music. If you loved GT 1 than I can't see how you wouldnt love Gran Tourismo4
though. It's not a new idea, but its the latest version on a much more powerfull system. If you played PS1 GT1 right now you wouldn't realize how much better GT4 is. framerates, polygons, everything

The problem about the AI is surprizing, but is hardly ever is an issue, and even if you were playing against other people, they still might hit your car.

Maybe GT 5 will be made for the PS3 in a few years, with even more improvements and fixes, then everyone will be happy. I just hope they don't drop 400 or so cars again in the process.

you got to admit over 650 cars is shit-load.

Hmmm, to me the whole point about a game is to do something different and experiance new things. You mentioned Ridge Racer and how its not realistic but thats not the whole point in a game, also photorealistic graphics imo are a waste of time. I like games with artistic style and new and original gameplay. It takes a lot for me to actually play a game and like it but tbh, Project Gothem and Ridge Racer and fun for me, I don't really car about realism or photorealistic graphic. I would much rather just have fun.

I like artistic games too! Awesome, but I don't think artistic graphics mix with racing games

for example, I tried a cell shaded arcade racing by capcom called automobile modelista, the cartoon looking cars was really fresh, but the game just plain wasn't very playable or fun.

Anyway video games came a long way in the past 20 years, they have gone from simple black and white blocks to colored graphics where you where a giant pixel (atari 2600 Adventure) and had to use your imagination, to the current forefront of going into photorealistic graphics.

This is a trend that will never cease, the games will continue to improve more and more, and I'm excited. I can't wait, but I have to. Technology is up there to do amazing things already, but it's years and years of work to do the software, and the hardware would be like only something NASA could afford.

I look forward to a time when you have first person game like Half-Life2 but where you could go outside your home in the game( did you download the amazing video of that guy who maped the street where he lives, and his apartment using the HL2 engine? You Must see this), and get into a car with the driving engine of a mixture of Gran Tourismo's physics with the city-scapes and traffic lights of Grand Theft Auto. you could fly a plane that would be more real than the latest flight simulators, etc. etc, to blur the lines of reality.

Its coming, but we will just have to wait.

In the mean time, I am happy playing the best the present time world has to offer in video games. As far as the current games, nothing has come close to what Gran tourismo offers in terms of the most realistic car game combined with a fun game to play

Games emulate things that we are interested in real life.
Guns, cars, girls, kung-fu, playing cards, whatever it may be.

When they can combine a perfect portrayal of all of these things into one game, it will really be something.

I think it would be awesome when they have combined a game like gran tourismo with the crashes of burnout and by this time the graphics will have improved 10 fold.

I think games like GRand theft auto and shenmue has made the step into this direction, and there is no turning back.

BTW: making changes to the AI is not subltle. AI is by far the hardest thing to program, most everything else is just data cruching. The physics and AI are extremely compicated, and require alot of intelligence and skill to do. Why do you think AI is always such a big issue .. "man the AI sux .. blah blah" you have heard it before.

Thats why I'm saying, once they get the formula for that, and have more powerfull hardware for a platform(Playstation 3) other comanies , even the monolithic giant microsoft will have trouble just keeping up.

Sony is one of the most powerfull, if not THE most powerfull entertainment company in the world, If they are doing their best, you better belive Gran Tourismo 4 is that damn good.

If you haven't played it, you better believe it, I wouldn't sit here and recommend a game that wasn't good!

I am a game programer myself for a hobby, hopefully for a career soon enough, and It took me 20 years of programing to figure out how to do extremely simple turn based AI (granted I am self taught and started when I was 9 years old). Fact remains. HARD

I understand what you are saying now, but I didn't notice, the rims look fully 3D and look really good.

If Polyphony came up with a technique to save resources by removing tons of polygons from 3D wire frame rims, using a rotating texture?

thats pure genius. Wow, that is keeping it simple and saving alot of cpu resources

I guess thier name Polyphony is a good name for them
Poly(gon) phoney

fake polygons. hah!

If you don't like the realistic look of the game thats fine, but for the record just want to clear this up.

GT4 does do things different and new experiences.

Theres the photo mode which is really versitile, you can do alot with the camera, effects, staging of the photos, and upload your favorite cars to the internet...

There is a ton of new game modes, and ways to play the game including snow, wet tracks, and the dirt rally races are completely re-done, Im sure you have seen how cool the grand canyon tracks look. look at AmishSlayer's pix .thats what the rally tracks look like. the red clay Grand canyon.

EDIT: he didn't take any grand canyon pix but I will soon enough. his pix are on page 3

You can buy suped up cars from the "tuner village" like carbon fiber Skyline, etc.

You can now add turbo to just about any car,.. just like irl.

then the supercharger

NOS is done perfectly. not a BS 5-10 second blast like in Need for speed underground 2, but like 60 seconds .. (adjustable for power/duration)

Now you can buy cars from the 60's, 70's 80's 90's 00's and the future

Now you can remove the stock spoiler and upgrade it to a better on any car

Yep they added trucks, suv's , I even a minivan or two

How can you say Gran Tourismo isn't doing new things? :smoking:

What did Ridge racer add to thier new game ?

non-real cars to chose from over3 factors: acceleration, top speed, and handling?
I dont know.
Thats the way I remember the game

And Project Gotham2 you can't modify your cars at all, and there is alot of bumper cars. not many cars or tracks.

Bah :dozey:

^^

wow that guy is freaking good, did you those nice turns he made while going like aroun 250 mph on those downhills

Anyone driving a race car drives like that In real life.
I love watching the in-car camera on race cars In real life

He's not any better than me :smoking:
The Average driver drives like that!:hmph:

I bet he won that car by doing the endurance race on that particular track. (Practiced that track.)
