I loved the first one, but wasn't too big of a fan of anything NIS released after it. Any opinions?

NIS= Nippon Ichi Studios. Courtesy of some of the most bizarre RPGs, actually, games, that I've ever played. Disgaea, Rhapsody, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle, etc. Their games are usually really damn rare, and are pretty highly acclaimed, although Disgaea was the only one that really drawed me in (although i'd like to give Phantom Brave another shot).

I could have bought Disgaea, but I heard that it's addictive like crack is addictive (ie in an unhealthy way) so I shied away from it.

The only SRPG series I've really delved into is Fire Emblem, which I imagine is not at all similar

Disgaea 1 is rare because NIS wasn't publishing it, Atlus had it and they don't release a lot of copies. You can bet Disgaea 2 won't be rare like the first one.

Might pick up the second one later, the first one was pretty long and from what I hear, this one have a lot more hidden goodies.

It's not really that addictive, or it wasn't for me at least. And yes, it's in a totally different league from Fire Emblem (thank god, too).

I've played the first one and there are TONS of routes for advancement in the game. You can get your chars to like level 10,000 in 150 job classes and every item in the game has it's own item world you can go to and fight in to make the item stronger (100 levels of each item world), etc.

I can only imagine what kind of depth the 2nd one has.
