i just finished building a new pc for a friend. the problem is that the display is not coming on. when i turned on the pc, all the fans were running and the thermometer was working too.

here are the specs

AMD Athlon x2 3800+
DFI Lan Party Socket 939 Mobo
ATI x800XL 256 mb PCI-E
2 * 1 GB Kingston PC 3200 Ram
Sonty DVD drive
200 GB maxtor SATA hardrive.
450 W PSU
Raidmax case

Did you plug the monitor cable into the ATI x800XL and not the regular monitor plug? It needs to be directly connected to the video card.

yeah i did. i tried the DVI and VGA and the display wont come on. i have a vga to dvi converter. just to let u noe. what do u mean not the regular monitor plug? the one on the mobo?

Try booting up without the video card. Does the monitor work on another computer? Try and rule out stupid problems before you get into more complicated things like drivers :)

yeah, im on my own pc. theres nothing wrong with my lcd monitor. theres smth wierd about the ati card. it doesn have a power connector.

That's odd... really... there's nothing at all powering your card?

well, i guess you can just take the bastard back and get a GeForce 7900 GT :D

lol, the x800 xl is my friend's bro's. my friend is definitely getting the 7900 Gt but its so hard to get!!!

I agree with Kamikazie :p

You hooked up all the available cables, right? Especially the multi-colored ones?

It might be a completely different problem, like your RAM is in the wrong slot. Double check each connection. The default drivers should still allow you to see video. Can you get into the BIOS?

i cant get into the bios. like i said, the screen is black. my rams are place in alternate colors. what is the muti colored cable?

It should be there. If not, there's probably a spare somewhere inside your computer. Should be a 4 socket cable.

Should be there... it's not the one sticking out of the case, it's inside the case, probably pointing at your HDD or CD drives.

I know, it should be there!! Then again I could be wrong, I've never worked with ATI cards, but if there's no power going to it, that's your problem.

damn, anyway thx guys. im gonna sleep now and work on it later in the morning.

the x800 xl has a low power usage so it doesn require a power connection from the power supply. it gets its own power from the pci-e slot. i still haven figured the problem is. all the fans are running, but the display is still blank

The way I like to troubleshoot is look at the possibles and eliminate them. In your case, there are the following possibles.

The monitor is faulty
The GFX card is faulty
Another piece of hardware in your PC is faulty.

To test, in that order, you would put the monitor on another PC (You said you did that). Then take the GFX card out and put it in another PC, so I recommend that for your first step. If it works, then something else in there is faulty. Swap the various components, 1 at a time, with onces from your rig, untill you discover the component that is faulty. Start with the Ram first is my advice.

Have you selected the right signal on the monitor? Try switching those. I'm not really sure if that can even be a problem on an LCD monitor, but it does with CRT monitors. I can select 2 signals on this monitor (Illyama vision master pro 17 CRT), called BNC and D-SUB. Mine works on D-SUB.

right now, i think its either the GPU or the some hardware is faulty. i think im gonna tell my friend to configure his monitor. im also gonna try out his gpu on his other pc.

This doesn't make sense. The card obviously came with a power cable, but you don't have it plugged in.

This is your problem.

x800 xl doesn require a power connector. it gets its power from the pci-e slot.

System Requirements: a connection to your PC's internal power supply for operation. Consult your system builder or OEM to ensure your system has an adequate power supply. Otherwise, ATI recommends a 300-Watt power supply or greater to ensure normal system operation where a number of other internal devices are installed.

Hook it up to your god damn PSU! NOW!

I think I had a similar problem before, does the computer boot up properly with one short beep? I had a bad RAM stick, maybe you should try taking it out. If that doesn't work, you could try to isolate all the parts one by one.

i cant even connect the psu onto the gpu. how the heck am i supposed to connect?

the gpu and the lcd work on the other pc. the ram sticks work on my pc. i think theres smth wrong with the mobo.

i changed the gpu to a 6800 and it works now. thx for the help guys.
