Well i just got half life two..and i really want to play mulitplayer...but to my dismay...it crashes...althought i recently put in the 6 map packs from some site i dont recall... all i did was replace the folders but it was just maps...and it doesnt delete the files that were in there it just adds more to it..so im not sure if that causes problems or not...

but heres the error message i recieve after connecting to a server...

I also do not believe it is a low memory problem because like i said...ive played one game before installing map packs and it worked fine...but all of a sudden it doesnt any more...but i did not do anything out of the ordinary with the map pack installation... please help me...thank you

just for reference i have an AMD 3000+ with 160 gb hard drive 512 mg ram
256 mg nvidia gfx card so i dont believe specs are a factor...

well well

my problem is 50 % solved lol...soo...i go to delete the WHOLE hl 2 death match folder...re download it clean and it works... as i suspected...but when i went to reinstall all the maps manually it does that same funky error....now..i know other people have the map packs in working order...what might be wrong with my extraction method...first i followed exactly how the read-me said...but error message occured...then...i took the maps folder out and cut all the maps and pasted them into my user account in the correct directory...after all that was complete..i still get the error message...whats up?...are the files corrupted or what?...im not sure how they could be but... who knows

I believe the maps should go in 'Steam\SteamApps\yourusername\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\maps'

I take it they are the hl2files dot com map packs??

If this is correct, maybe you should try downloading them through Steam? It will be a pain at first, but a lot of people find they stick to the same servers/maps after a while anyway :dozey:
