Do I HAVE to have Steam to play HL2?

I posted this earlier, but I think I was misinformed. The college I attend has blocked Steam's port because of bandwidth. We all just got back at 3 am from buying HL2 and find out we have to have steam to install it. Most of us even have Steam accounts, we just can't log on to verify the game! ITS RIGHT THERE AND WE CAN'T PLAY IT!!!! Is there anything we can do? I guess we might have to just talk to the computer administrater, but is there a way to register or verify your CD key without using Steam? Thanks a lot for any help.

Yes you do, steam will validate your account and more importantly UNLOCK THE GAME. You can't play the game if its locked and steam is the only way it will unlock it .....Use your phone line, get a free aol trial account and use 56k to unlock your game. HOpe that helps.

What I heard was, that you had only go to internet once just to be able to play the game, unlocking it or something.. After that; No way you have to be in the internet to play Single Player.

no, u don't. it's just a one time activation. once u've done it, then single player is available u even without internet connection

You need the internet to activate the game, once it's been activated as far as I know you can play SP by loading Steam in offline mode.
