got two questions to throw out there:

1- i plan to get HL2 very soon (i'm a casual gamer). anyhow, i have the original HL life on my pc, from the original disk i bought back in 98, and i have a steam acct, so that i can still play my beloved TFC. so my question is, if i buy HL retail, will it merge w/my old HL acct into a new one or do i start all over? also, is it better to d/l HL2 or is retail better?

2- here's my specs. will they hold up well against HL2?

p4 3ghz
1gb ram
6600gt 128mb geforce

thanks for any advice.

1 buy it, install it and find out!! yes, it will merge with your current account, lol ... the whole "is it better to d/l or pickup retail" decision is all up to you and your personal preference

[I bought it retail, btw. Call me old fashioned but I relish having the box and disc medium.]

2 those are sufficient specs

I have the same specs as you. Except I have p4 2ghz. (I don't care if it's low or not.) And I just got a 6600gt 128mb card and I can run HL2 on high settings fine, the framerate will drop in a few places and that's it.
I bought HL2 retail. It seems like it would be faster to install it than download it (obviously) You won't have to make a new Steam account when you get HL2. You just install it and then HL2 should show up in your games list. :) Hope that helped.

If you register your copy of HL2 on the same account you registered all the HL1 it will all be merged on the same account obviously. So you'll have all the games on your 'my games' list, to choose from. If you make different accounts you'll have to log into each one to change game , which is a pain, so dont do that.

Retail or Steam package...depends what you want. Retail and the steam Bronze package are identical. If you want the entire back catalogue (HL1, CS, DOD etc) and DOD source and HL1 Source go for Silver or Gold steam packages, both more money respectively though. Theres also the collectors edition for sale in shops, but its really crap tbh.

Also depends on your connection, you need BB to download all the HL2 data, theres quite a bit! Either buy bronze on steam and download it, or silver if you want DOD source or HL1 Source. (If you want DOD Source in the future it will be available as a single purchase) Considering you have your HL1 already, getting silver would mean you also but HL1 twice over, which is silly and a waste of money in that respect.
I would go for the normal retail package, with just Half-life 2, Halflife2 Deathmatch (must be downloaded not on the cds) and Counter Strike Source. And buy Day of Defeat Source later (if you want it). That makes most sense to you for all i know about your circumstances.

With regard to your system specs, they are more than capable to run Half-life 2 to a good/great ability, so no worries there.

Anymore questions just shoot.

i'll denfinitely buy it then. i prefer retail, too- i like having something tangible to associate w/a great game. like i never forgot overlooking the HL1 box while on the infamous tram ride into black mesa and thinking "this game is probably gonna be good."

i was thinking about holding off on HL2 for the xbox version, but it seems to be taking forever and i want to check out some of the HL2 mods as well. i hope they're worth it.

they most certainly are

also, don't forget, you've got CS, TFC, DM, Capture the Flag ...

... and 'The Lost Coast' bonus level [which will also add brand new graphical features to Source]

sometimes i fear TFC2 is just an urban legend, haha.

alright, I tested it with a 1.6ghz CPU, 256mb RAM, a 16mb video card and it worked fairly well with the lowest settings possible.
