Do i need to finish HL2 to play HL2 episode 1

I was wondering if i would be able to play HL 2 episode 1 even through i havent managed to complete HL2. I managed to egt up to "we don't go to ravenholm" mission but then i got stuck and have no idea where to go after reading many guides.

Would i be allright starting episode 1 or should i really finish HL2?

Episode 1 is standalone. You can play it separately.

But you should finish HL2 first.

You should really finish HL2, especially since you've only got about 1/5 into the game, you've got so much more to enjoy! I tell you what, go back into HL2 now and take a screenshot of where you are in Ravenholm and where you are stuck. (Press F5) Then go to www.imageshack.us and upload the screenshot which is saved in C:/Valve/Steam/Steamapps/your@email/HL2/Screenshots (it's not exactly that location, but look around and you'll find it). Once you've got the link to the picture, post it here and we'll try and show you how to continue on through Ravenholm.

If i go through the window i end up back where i started this area.

Can anyone help me! i really want to complete HL2 and HL2 episode 1 before HL2 episode 2 comes out or is out for too long.

There are 2 ways through that house...one is a stairway back towards the ground, where you started the area like you said. The other is a ladder up to the attic, where you have to go to progress.

Like Apocalypse said, you're taking the wrong route through that house in the second-last pic. When inside, follow the corridor but stay to the right and look for a ladder leading to the attic. There is a door there which might look like decoration but which is in fact openable.

Episode One is for those who completed HL2 and want some more. Buying Episode One before completing HL2 makes no sense to me whatsoever. You obviously like to buy stuff you don't need, so buy away!!!

I briefly got stuck in the area with the electrified fence and all the flame traps. I couldn't figure out how to enter the building where Father G is first spotted. Then, as I was driting off to sleep that night, it occurred to me what I was overlooking.
