Intelligence feeds on the world. It is interesting because it is interested, interested in things, interested in events and interested in interacting with a system in order to learn. Games are just one more system to be fascinated by, and any kind of negative cognitive effect seems unlikely considering they promote sustained attention and problem-solving thought.

Fuck I was in a conversation not four hours ago with a girl gamer who outright admitted she knew that GRRL GAMERS were responsible for the backlash against them in the gaming community and yet despite that she also admitted that she enjoys boasting that she's a girl what plays video games to validate herself in a male-oriented subculture.

You've got a bit of a sample bias there because in a male-oriented subculture only a certain kind of person is going to persist in A) actually getting involved in communities, B) actually ever voicing themselves, and C) admitting/promoting the fact that they are a girl. Look at gaming communities where the gender balance is a lot more even (eg RP servers for World of Warcraft) and you'll find that the women there are mostly pretty normal, or at any rate as varied as the men.
