True. Also, contrary to popular belief, smarter people don't have bigger brains. But they do have more folds within their brain, which means more surface area. People with mental retardation and other disorders tend to have very smooth brains.

10% is an average use of the brain at any one given time. This includes consious and subconsious thought. The actual percentage of our brain that is used over long periods of time is much higher than just 10%, but varies from person to person.

Some people with partial lobotomies are able to function much the way they did before because of the brains amazing ability to compensate for missing tissue. Just because they can function without any visible side affects does not mean that that part of their brain was not used previously.

Everyone is endowed with a free liscense to use 7-10% of our brain. But, with a monthly subscription to any given newspaper, we get to use 0.5-1%!

And that doesn't have to be proven.

It's fun that you actually asked this question because last friday a brain-specialist came and visited our school. He's been in the media a lot lately, eversince he said that clever people should get paid to get more children, and less smart people should get paid not to get children. Haha, it's one crazy statement but the media made him sound like a clone of Lucifer. He wasn't so bad, and I actually liked some of his statements.

Well, before he got on stage there was another brain-specialist on stage and he was asked your direct question: "Do we only use 10% of our brain?" And the question is simple: NO!
There are some parts of the brain that we do not use as much as we probably could but it's not true. We use a lot more. I don't remember exactly what he said, but now you know it from a specialist.
By the way, I've got an article about the human brain laying around somewhere. I'll go and have a look tomorrow since it's quite late in Denmark right now.

My question is, how can it be even a possibility for it to be 10 percent? I mean, the brain capacity can't even be measured. Did the scientists actually measure someone's brain and set him as the benchmark?

Haven't heard of this and don't know if it's a serious statement, but it would be quite unethical. Reminds me of Dr. Mengele that was trying to create the übermensch...
