I have no idea, due to the fact that I'm not gay.... and assuming only gets you in trouble :|

There was an interesting documentary about gender choice the other week, in which a bunch of doctors were trying to determine whether there is a physical difference between the male and female brain (as opposed to just chemical)

After much investigation they discovered that certain areas in the famale brain are larger than in males. Obviously, they then tested the brains of some transexual and gay people. Low and behold, they had 'female' brains - and had done since birth.

So no, I don't believe anyone has a choice in their sexuality.

Think of it this way....IF it's just a choice....how come "straight" people can't choose to be gay? It's NOT a choice for them...they KNOW what they are and what they want. And the same goes the other way, if it JUST a choice, how come gay people don't choose to be straight? I mean think of the crap and name calling, why would they choose that unless it was something they liked and felt was "them"?

I mean I am a straight male and the thought of being with a guy does nothing for me so why would I choose that? Answer: I wouldn't. A choice implies you could pick one or the other, not just one...

You can not possibly "become" gay or straight unless that's your internal makeup to begin with. Just as you can't possibly make someone like liver if you serve it to them every day of their lives...it's not going to happen.

For me this is one of those religious aspects which bugs me. Since man was created in God's image how do you explain gays? Simple: it's their fault and their choice. And that's just sad to me.

why would anyone choose to be gay? No one would willing choose to be ridiculed, ostracized and shunned by most of your peers, family and friends.

Funny how that 'research article' on the first page states that homosexuality is a trait of people with loads of older brothers... like it's natures population control - if there's a family of about 6 brothers, possibly less than half of them would want to have kids!

Since I'm not gay, I can't really tell you. I am naturally attracted to women, and didn't choose to, but I would have no clue if others were naturally attracted to men. I guess it would kinda be the same thing.

I also saw this.

Okay, what about this new 4d technology that can get a 3d image of a baby in the womb. What if the technology is adapted to scan brains, and also what if there is the ability to alter the sex of a child after determining what type of brain it has (i.e. if a baby boy has a girls brain, should he be altered to be a girl?).

No doubt all the technology will eventually become reality, and by that time I suspect there will be 'gay rights campaigns' to stop it.

I'm curious to know what any aliens who may invade us think..

Alien: You have a tri-gendered species?
Human: Um, no... It's a little difficult to explain.
Alien: And they do this for fun?!

I've had contact with a lot of gay people over the years, and am usually amazed by the fact that I have a total inability to tell them apart from straight people. There really isn't usually any difference at all.
That said I do believe that it is largely an affair out of their hands. Time and time again we hear of people who don't wish to admit to their parents or loved ones that they aren't who they thought they were. This is almost always the result of them realizing they're not entirely normal, and are reluctant to admit it. Few people would ever choose to be outside the norm on a day-to-day basis unless they really feel it is the only path for them. That said, once they've come to terms with it it often helps define themselves as a person.

I think it is both, most people are not gay by choice but some people are.

Statsistics Canada just released a survey covering this topic.

They found out that while 1% of the population concidered themselves gay at this time, 1.7 had at one point in time concidered themselves gay.

Although this stat cant determine why these people changed, choice has to be a factor in there somewhere.

Whoever said something about tv portraying gay people all as handsome young men makes me laugh because they really do. They're always really prissy and feminine and do that wrist thing.

I've never done that wrist thing.

And also... not all gay men are really masculine. I'm not very masculine at all... but im not really feminine either. But I remember on the bus in Toronto one time while visiting family in canada there were these two people sitting in the row next to me headed fort he gay pride parade on kingston or something, and they... wow, they were your very stereotypical gay person.

I enjoyed talking with them though

ya but that's what network tv thinks we want to see ...like Homer said

"I want my homosexuals to be flaming ...how else can you tell if they're gay?" (I'm paraphrasing I cant remember the precise words)

I have found that men in general have been becoming increasingly more feminine. The number of self claimed gays have been increasing as well, both of these factors are compounding each other and making gays a much more widely accepted group of people.

Really I don't see any problem about it though. Historically homosexually has actually been very widely accepted. It wasn't until the end of the Roman empire that homosexuality was really persecuted (in the Western world at least). The Greeks were very comfortable with it, in fact they took it to extremes that the majority of people now could never even consider. Anyone ever hear of the island of Lesbos in the Mediterranean sea? It was Greek, now take a guess as to where the word lesbian came from.

For most people today that are gay it is not a choice, but as acceptance of homosexuality increases I suspect there will be an increasing number of people who will turn gay by choice, maybe not a conscience choice but it will not be hard wired into them like it seems with most gays today.

Really homosexuality has existed for thousands of years, and it was widely accepted during certain parts of history. I see the rising acceptance of homosexuality now as a natural social change that was bound to happen at some point in time. Bring on the change I say, just don't hit on me.
