Because recently in Edge, the magazine makes many references to the gaming public as geeks and nerds..... I am not happy with this at all.... I'm not exactly sure, but I feel it is a derogatory label..... speak your mind

Geek = Someone who is addicted to electrical equipment or someone who is annoying, looked it up in a dictionary all by myself.

Well I am addicted to my PC, so yes I am a geek, but I dont like being called a geek because somepeople see a geek as having spots, wearing glasses, no friends, jack ups, etc... etc..., but thats tottaly wrong, some kewl people are addicted to computers, with girlfriends, there own car, I have alot more to say, including things that make sense , but I cant be botherd to type it all out

Going by the definition Simmo found... Yea, I guess I'm a geek, I too am addicted to my PC and I like electronic stuff/gadgets. What guy doesn't like electronic stuff? I'm not annoying though.

lets make up a new defainition- a person who sacrafices his/her social life for a hobby or self indured work. sounds gd?

Therefore it is a derogatory label for us. I certainly don't consider myself a geek, since my viewpoint is that a geek is someone who stays at home and doesn't do much at all except go on his/her computer... on a side note I doubt anybody is truely addicted to their electronics.... they may think its cool etc... but they dont need it to get thru the day.... and calling ppl who work in the industry (see a related topic of mine, I feel it's quite important the State of the Industry becuase it deals with this issue slightly as well)

Thanks

I'm proud to call myself a geek and I don't understand why some people are offended by such names as geeks and nerds.

I take pride in my knowledge. I spend pretty much of the week in front of my computer. But, of course I go out and party sometimes too.

I'm just too lazy to party all the time, relaxing with my computer and learning new stuff is much more challenging and fun than drinking, if you ask me.

I've had my fair share of drinking though. I think its advisable to try some of everything(almost) in life,
it's such a shame that some people miss out just because they choose not to drink, or not to spend more time in front of their computer.

It's all about balance.

but, back to the topic. Yes I am a hardcore geek for life.

I wouldnt call myself a geek. Nobody else does either. They know i like computers and consider me geekish. But i dont really fit into the category of. Besisdes i think the old stereotype is falling away. Since so many people use computers for recreation now.

Anyway like i said i dont fall into the category. im no more spotty than anyone else, im not addicted to computers. I go out skating half the time (skateboard not ice skating, lots of people make that mistake), well any time that i can. I like to go out with my friends. I dont often go out "partying" because to be honest going out and getting drunik doing the same thing every week is kind of dull in my book. Besisdes "Obey the laws of the land" is what im taught to do. That includeds not buying alcohol under age. Drinking it is different im quite partial to that. Anyway im bored of typing in this thread. Theres more to say but i cant be bothered.

I somewhat agree. I most likely spend more time on my computer than I do doing other things. However, since I moved my computer downstairs, I have been having more of a social life with my parents :D, and I have been spending less time on my computer. My setup at the moment lets me have the dining table directly behind me, so I can swivel my chair 180 degrees and use the table for homework, drawing, painting (model-painting, Warhammer), watching TV (which is on the other side of the table) or eating. Another bonus is that my garden is like 5 metres from where I sit, so I usually head out there alot now and play with my fish or dog. :). Oh yeah, it's also really near my kitchen too, which is a big plus. :E

Dictionary Definition:

1.
1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

I consider myself to be both foolish and clumsy, therfore I must be a geek anyway. :E

I agree to, I find it much more of a challange to sit at a computer and learn new things and make new friends everyday, beats going out in the cold anyday!, except when its nice and sunny :D

Well, I'm skinny, and am basically a "computer Geek".. so i geuss i'm a geek ;( ...... god damn, the Therapist had just got past this bit of the Trauma... thats another couple of hundred sessions ;(

close 10 or so. I like saying $100.00 words and they seem to run away :)
Truthfully I havn't really scared anybody wile im laughing crazily. ( <- is that a new word?)they just jump and scream.

I could care less about what the dictionary says. I hate people who are so ****ing literall :|

I'm a geek, yes, and I don't need a ****ing dictionary to tell me that.

I consider myself a Geek, and I don't really care that I am. More and more people are becoming "geeks" in society today. The term certainly doesn't mean I wear suspenders, slick my hair, and talk about nothing but computers and games.

I spend a lot of time at my computer, but I've got a social life and I'm pretty popular. I know a few kids who are 'geeks', and they're really nice people (if a little odd). I guess, in a way, I am a geek too, I'm interested in electronics, I enjoy learning, I spend waaaay too much time online, but compared to some people I know that's nothing.

One of my friends spends all his free time on his computer. He's got just about every console out there, 4 TVs in his room, one PC (he doesn't even know the specs... he buys games and expects them to run :-/), and he's obsessed. I went to his house for his birthday party thing a few years ago, and all we did was pretend to be computer game characters in the back yard (well, they did. I sat out and laughed). If that's not 'geeky' what is? (I've known this kid most my life, and he's really nice. I'm just pointing out that he's a tad strange)

Yeah, I could be classed as a geek, but compared to some people my couple of hours a day on the XBOX is nothing. :p

I'm with SHIPPI on this one.... although I don't own and Xbox... just a PC :p

yeah.... I don't consider myself a geek :)

I really think its the young people who are so afraid of calling themself geeks, they are so caught up with being "popular"

Hopefully you see things from another perspective when you get older. And btw. here in scandiavia theres nothing negative about being a geek, I've never seen anyone get "bullied" by it or anything like that.

The only place I see that is in US movies.

This world is technically full of geeks. Think how many millions of people either have a PC at home or work or both. A majority of people work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week behind a computer. Does that make them a geek too? If so, welcome to the club.

My girlfriend likes to tell everyone that I'm her little "computer nerd". Does it bother me? No. More like a pet name really. Besides, I make good money by working with computers. Not many people argue with money.

I really agree that "geek" has pretty much lost it's meaning over the years. Typically it was the slicked back hair, thick taped glasses, and pocket protector that signified a "geek". You don't see too many people like that anymore. Times have changed. If you don't keep up with technology, computers, and electronics then society will leave you behind.

We're pioneers damn you!!

:cheese:

Remember Kiddies, people who call you a computer nerd, just say to them, you will be calling me boss soon. Computers is a gold mine for carrers now days
