I think that torrenting takes the fun out of pc gaming and gaming in general. wit the ability to torrent, one becomes flooded with gaming goodness and eventually stops appreciating how fun it actually is. I would compare it to an orgy where you're having sex with so many people that you forget why you're having sex. I played back to back call of duty 2 and battlefield 2 and I felt like I was lost in a sea of games that had no end in sight. But back in the day, when i had the money to buy a game every now and then, I remember how exilirating(SP) it was to get home, crack open that shiny new wrapper, and enjoy a few hours of good old gaming goodness. My point is that when you have access to the forbidden fruit all the time, it no longer becomes forbidden and is no longer fun. What makes buying a game even better is when you spend your hard earned cash on it. So what are your experiences with torrenting? have they been positive or negative?

only if the game is really good

if it's junk, I feel sadly dissapointed.

I've never stolen games, but from experience I can say that this is true for music piracy.

I used to download music all the time, starting back when Napster first came out.
Two years ago, I deleted it all and now I only buy albums.

The end result is that the music I do have is of much higher quality than what I got previously, which was whatever random stuff struck my fancy while listening to the radio. When you buy music, you are far less likely to have shitty music.

So I find it safe to assume that when you buy your games, you end up playing much fewer shitty games.

Depends...sometimes I might, other times...it really depends on if I really want it or not...or something I've been looking forward to.

The only games I've ever torrented were oldies that I had bought long ago, but lost the CD key (**** those things).

In terms of legal online distribution, however, I welcome it entirely. Screw retail if I can just download.

I haven't torrented in ages, i usually just pick up titles i missed out on in the bargain bin. Though i do feel bad for getting NSFU, what a shitty game.

Out of about 150+ original games I have, only 6 are warezed if you don't count abandonware titles from 1994 and earlier.:)

Yeah, I feel the same way about music too. I have so many fricken songs that I don't know what to do with all of them; after a while I stop seeing the artistic suttelities of each song and just sort of breeze through each song.
I consider games to have the same nature; if you breeze through them, you don't really see the innovations beyond the pretty graphics.

I don't usually get excitement from buying a game anymore (im 20) so torrent or not its just a game that can wait for real life to open up a time gap. The last game (and only one i can remember) that gave me real excitement was when i'd pre-ordered WoW and the day it turned up at my door :D such a quality game worth getting excited about.

As for my thoughts on torrenting, it isn't such a bad thing (well, it is, and it isn't) because it's like a full size demo, games can be mis-leading and you buy them under the impression that they're good, when infact, thats just bullshit. The last game i can think of that i torrented and didn't feel ashamed of was Doom3..while it was good, it wasn't worth £35 i would if spent if i hadn't of torrented it. I don't torrent all my games though, i bought FEAR and i own around 45 ps2 games and about 1/3 of a single door wardrobe of PC games/programs.

QFT, QFT and QFT lol :p

I hate when I have sex with so many people that I forget why I was having sex - I always come out of my bi-weekly (no pun intended) orgy with a sense of loss - who were all those people? I guess it is just like downloading games from the Internet: you never know what kind of cooties you're gonna get.

Yes. I love my box and cd. Best of all when i look at all the pc games i have next to each other its lovely!

Love buying PC games, the feeling of opening the case for the first time and placing the disc in the drive is exhilirating! Similar thing applies to music too.

Best moment was a year ago to the date when i got back from College to find Half-Life 2 on the floor. Such a great feeling to finally get the game of my dreams!

i agree totaly to
"get home, crack open that shiny new wrapper, and enjoy a few hours of good old gaming goodness."

thats some kind of feeling which warez doesnt offer.
But today you have to choose carefully what youre buying ... there are much crappy ore middleclass games out there ... or like the last two years they release ever good game in the last three month of the year (as now).

Yep, usually. I felt a horrible churn in my stomach when I bought Pariah though.

When I experience something I want to get as close to the core of the experience as possible. Cds, boxes, manuals, all of those distract me from the core. I want as little material things as possible so I can delve into the world of the game.

It is for the same reason that I cannot read an e-book. I am reminded of the physical when I read (the screen, the PC), whereas a normal book lets me more easily forget the material (I can carry it anywhere, anytime) and so I engage with the non-material, the story, the core, more easily.

IMO, torrenting is hence both cheaper and better. Better as in what I described above, and cheaper as in theft.

For the most part I have disliked purchasing games, as I most often feel ripped off. Good games are few and far between.

Come on everyone! Point and laugh an Salmon for buying a crappy game! /me points and laughs

Lets see, 50 dollars, or free. Hold on..yep..its coming..wait for it..Free.

For the record, I bought/own over 25 PC games, including FEAR, COD2, BF2 + more. I'm just saying simply, free is cheaper :-p

I own a shit load of games. All bought of course.
Do i do the unspeakable thing that most of us are unable to admit.
Yes i do!I see nothing wrong in trying out the games you like as long as you end up eventually buying them of course.

I feel good when it's a really good game. But when it's so shitty, like Stuntman (okay, I was really young and $50 was A LOT!) ... I cry.

I feel good when i get games, yeah.

I torrent stuff though. Stuff i can't get here and can't order online because I have no credit card and no one willing to give me theirs.

That has got to be the worst excuse I've ever read from a warez kiddy >.<

FYI my post was more of a statement in favour of things like steam, not an excuse for downloading warez. For those who do torrent games, the only thing I can say is that if you like the game, buy it as well. When I said in my post that torrenting is cheaper, it was meant as irony to underline that warez is theft. Maybe that clears up what I meant?

Jellyworld: I don't see the use in calling me a warez kiddy do anyone any good. My post was not meant as an excuse, but maybe you owe me one?

Then you should have made it clearer then.

every time I buy one I'm like "should've downloaded it" ... except HL2, because that's the only good game I've ever bought

I steal games because there too expensive and the boxes, manual's and crap are pointless to me.

If my excuse is not good enough for you, I don't really care, that is why I do it wether you like it or not.

I could agree with the "manual's and crap" being pointless, but too expensive ain't really an excuse now is it?
Do you steal a car because it's to expensive?
Do you steal a computer because it's too expensive?
I can see stealing something because it's too expensive if it's a thing that's necessary for your survival, i.e. food, but a game, lamest excuse ever.

And I don't care if you don't care, I'll still reply to someone who's downloading(and probably spreading, assuming you use BitTorrent) games illegally.:)

Not to mention, more and more modern day games are having their manuals on the actual disc, as well as in the box tho..

I've downloaded 1 game about a year ago. it was a game from 1987 for the Atari ST home computer. A version of a game I had for my atari. A system that Atari stoped selling nearly 20 years ago and the game is no longer available, so I see no harm in it, but I still felt kind of guilty for it. Other than that I've never downloaded games.

If i can't afford a game, then i don't deserve it. You people downloading games that are still sold in stores is dispicable and probably half the reason game companies go bankrupt.

I know what you mean about feel like getting ripped off if you buy a game and its not that great. I stoped buying music CD's anymore becuase everytime I do I feel like i got ripped off @$15 a piece, when the only good song is the one you heard on the radio, one which could have been easily recorded. So forget all that, I buy music creation programs and I make my own music. So i pay $30-$55 or so on a music creation program and I make about 30-350 songs that I like. hell if you make it yourself you are guaranteed to like it. It's not so easy to create masses of video games however, becuase they can take years to make. Which is even worse stealing those becuase they put a ton of work and money into it

Anyway, how about downloading a game demo and checking out reviews and using your past experience with games to decide if it is worth buying, or ask people on here if its any good.

If you don't want to pay for it, then you should do without!

I wonder if when you rent a game, or buy it used if they get any money either? Makes me wonder what difference downloading games would make anyway.

Oh, and to answer the thread topic. I feel a lot of excitement and anticipation if I buy a game that I know is going to be fantastic. I can hardly wait to get home and play it. Like Resident evil or something. If i dont think its going to be fantastic i don't buy it.

I dont feel all giddy when I download a game, which i've admittedly recently started to do with a couple... But I still give the gaming industry at least a thousand bucks a year on games, and buy so many. When its a game i've highly anticipated, once I get the package I start quaking and shivering as I open it up in excitement. The jitteryness is amazing, and I suppress amazing feelings of... well. Excitement.

Do you steal a car because it's to expensive?
Do you steal a computer because it's too expensive?

It's very easy to steal a game, and the chances of getting caught are slim. That is not the case for cars and computers. Imagine you could download a new graphics card or mobo, or download the new porsche. Maybe it would be different then...

So?
Does it being easy to steal justify theft?
I believe what you stated is pretty much common sense..?:)
I could rather easy steal cash from my friend when he leaves his gymbag when going to say the showers.
But does that justify me doing it?
I don't think so..

I think that'd make a pretty weak defense in court, even for downloading and spreading a game illegally, "It was so easy.. I had to do it..!"

Well my point was more to illustrate that your analogy had a problem. I was not trying to justify theft. IMO justifying theft is quite difficult (read impossible) if you steal something that isn't necessary for your own survival (in which case the term theft can be discussed).

Seeing how games are necessary for our daily survival, pirating games clearly is very easy to justify. :)

Aww nuts! I can't argue with that mate!:(

Im really no one to judge anyone.

Honestly if I had a DOWNLOAD NOW button in front of me for the hottest games, I can't deny that I might press it, but I'm not about to go searching for one.

It's almost like searching for an old lady to mug. Sure it's not hard, they probably couldn't even ID you. But you would just feel like a piece of shit afterwards I would think.

What the crap? I can never find a way to warez multiplayer games that work.
