Do you have to be connected to steam to play the downloaded version?

Hi guys, I am behind a uni firewall and it takes ages to accomplish anything on steam because of it. I preloaded HL2 before I came to uni so I already had it on my computer, so all i needed to do was activate it.

It's currently in the process of 'updating HL2' with an approximate time of 265 minutes :O

Will I have to connect to steam every time I want to play it, because that would be some hassle I could do without. I know you don't have to with the retail version.

I have the downloaded version and being at a university they wont let me log into steam, so in order to get it activated i went to my local internet cafe and got it working but when i came back to play i couldent get into steam and it wouldent let me play!!

u cant run HL2 without steam, u cannot run steam without connecting to ur user, this is sucks!

I read something about steam needing to be set to remember your password, and then put it into offline mode.

Offline mode will not be available if:
1. You did not select the "Remember My Password" option on the login screen.
2. You choose to login as a different user.
3. You select "Don't save account information on this computer" on the Steam Account Settings screen.
