My personal opinion is that people should tolerate others' beliefs, however irrational those beliefs may sound to us.

I also think these discussion about theism/atheism are stupid. I have never seen a single person change his beliefs solely as a result of something that was revealed to them during one of these discussions. After one of these discussions, I have never seen a theist become an atheist and I have certainly never seen an atheist become a theist. What's the point then ??

Do you think you are more intelligent than theists because you only believe in things supported by reason and scientific evidence?

[moment of silence]

Did you know that Einstein was a theist ?? Does that make him not so intelligent next to you?

Go to the library and read books on philosophy. You'll find that a lot of philosophers were atheists, but a bunch were theists also.

For that reason alone, I do not think that theism, and atheism, are related to intelligence. (I am willing to bet the last Pope was more intelligent than anyone here.)

So please let us stop being so arrogant and respect others' opinions. Who cares if you are right or they are right? Just believe whatever you want to believe and let others believe whatever they want to believe.

Anyway I did not mean to write so much . I just wanted to make this a poll and ended up writing more than I should have !!

I find the arguments pointless and sometimes offensive. I'm tired of being stereotyped and then telling me what I believe in (ahem MechaGodzilla)

I agree whit the topic creator

if you dont want to be steriotyped by the theist then dont bash them

a new religion hav entered is the over-atheism

I tolerate other people's beliefs, but my limit is the point at which their beliefs become illogical, ignorant, offensive, arrogant, or downright stupid.

Example.

Guy: "I believe in God"
Me: "That's cool."

<vs>

Guy: "Gay marriage is a sin because God says so, and should therefore be illegal."
Me: <country founded on atheist sensibilities, marriage is a legal and non-religious institution, etc. etc., also stop being retarded>

Aye. That pretty much sums up my feelings. I may not agree with religion, but I'll agree with its followers- until they start forcing their views on me/being batshit crazy.

also one thing that I dont like about bashing religion is that my ancestors just like almost all of the people here, are very religious (not crazy fan like)for example my grandparents, and say that the people that believe in jesus and god is stupid is like telling them the same thing so I dont like to bash religion

HOWEVER!

I also feel that, considering the power that the religious right is gaining on a near-daily basis, religion bashing [edit: not bashing, but heavy criticism] is becoming more and more a necessity if we want to keep an array of destructive and backwards religious concepts from being forced into government and everyday society.

No, from my experience, it gets annoying. One side is more than not ignorant and it ends up being a whole lot of stupid shouting. I mentioned evolution to this dude in my class and he ended up flipping out, "What do you mean we evolved from MONKEYS?!?!? I DIDN'T EVOLVE FROM A MONKEY! THAT'S CRAZY!! *frantic flailing of arms*". I do enjoy a good discussion between the two sides, however.

Yes. I enjoy it when people discuss such important things, its a sign of progression.

It's boring. Very boring. Because it goes nowhere, and just ends up offending/victimising one party.

Solves sweet **** all.

Nope, dont like it. Doesn't get anywhere. No one is going to change anyones mind with what they say. If they are going to enter a debate, then their minds are already set...

Now if your someone looking for an answer and want to keep an open mind one way or the other, thats differnt but going into debates is pointless... the Religion vs Everyone else debate has been going on since the beggining of time and intellectual thought.

It's a 50/50 chance, either god exists or he doesn't. Everybody pick sides and will get this all sorted out in about 80 years.

You can't prove anything for either side (that's why it's called faith and not fact), and people who use the bible to back up their beliefs frustrate me because to use the bible as a source for your argument the person you're talking to has to believe that there is truth in what the bible says...which is most likely not the case.

So basically the argument boils down to "ya huh!" and "na uh!"

Learn some basic maths and then profess to us probability.

I find the arguments pointless and sometimes offensive. I'm tired of being stereotyped and then telling me what I believe in (ahem MechaGodzilla)

That's why we need discussion. No-one will understand your mindset if your refuse to speak.
Every aspect of human endeavor is about constantly testing what works and discarding what does not - except when it comes to religion.

Everything you eat, everything you wear and every other aspect of your life has been tested at some point, and any sensible person knows that we need to test things to choose which are best.
You can't have any progress without discussion.

Religion refuses to be tested, so it can't improve. If a society is largely religious, it can't improve. It hinders human life.

If anything I say is a "stereotype" then call me on it. I am certain that I have not used any such thing, but since I'm not religious, that certainty can be legitimately challenged.
I acknowledge that my ideas can be fallible, and that's why my ideas aren't inherently stupid.

Did you know that Einstein was a theist ?? Does that make him not so intelligent next to you?

Did you know Einstein wasn't religious at all and religious people tend to latch onto any famous scientist who just so happens to mention the word god.
OH EINSTEIN SAID THE WORD GOD IT MUST BE TRUE

That's not an intelligent argument. That's bullshit.
It's like the inverse collorary to Godwin's law.

Go to the library and read books on philosophy. You'll find that a lot of philosophers were atheists, but a bunch were theists also.
For that reason alone, I do not think that theism, and atheism, are related to intelligence.
If a philosopher believes in god and can't justify that belief, that belief is flawed.
If a scientist believes in god and can't justify that belief, that belief is flawed.
If the president of the world believes in god and can't justify that belief, that belief is flawed.

Theism is not related to intelligence. It coexists with it nauseously. It's doublethink.

It proves that even the smartest people can be coerced into dividing thier thoughts against themselves.

Mecha, I like your logical approach to it. But it only works with logical people. Think about what you are discussing :)
Haha! Loving the poll results! The 'go theists' is like the lowest. They don't exactly fare too well in these arguments tbh

One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion.

I prefer debates like "Evolution vs. Creationism", not "Religion vs. Atheism" or "Christianity vs. Islam".

I wouldn't care so much if Christianity wasn't the ooooonly one bitched about on these forums. It gets quite tiresome when people only focus on Christianity.

Only to Christians.

It's not our fault that christainity is the world's largest religion by a huge margin.

And what would be the point of discussing others?

I've run into a single muslim on these forums. Every single other religious person here has been christian.
And there's no real difference between the two. The names of the ghosts are different, but otherwise they're basically identical in terms of idiocy.

Well that's not true, if according to you most of us are actually christians cause we're not violent.

shut up churchy

how's that for intolerant? debate is good: the issue is almost always settled by whomever has more facts ...so ....

If people wanna argue about religion then let them ... meh think dat

Thats not a HUGE margin
....wow they actually put the LDS church in the Christianity slice.

Indeedy, I've just seen other pies like this and we're placed in the "other" category.
:( Most Christians don't even think we're Christian

.....even though Jesus Christ is right in the name

Well that's not true, if according to you most of us are actually christians cause we're not violent.

It's true that the real christianity - the one that Jesus invented - died out over 1900 years ago.

I am refering here to the awful remake of the same name.
It's not my fault that you aren't killing sinners like Jesus told you to.

See how your religion's many ills are not my fault?

Edit:

Uriel, how can 10% of the Earth's population not be a huge margin?
Also, you aren't christian because you do not follow biblical law.

well for what it's worth you were included under christianity in a Directory of World Faiths document I recently worked on

shut up churchy

Stern always knows exactly what to say.

Is it just me or is a few of the people here are like scientists? believe in every aspect of science. lol

Wait a minute thats because me, you, & every one here is Dr. Gordon Freeman; So Mr. Freeman is a atheist so that makes me an atheist. D:

If we had a large number of Muslims or Thorists willing to debate, it'd be a different story.

To the people that say debate solves nothing, or that no one is changing their position, you're forgetting about the lurkers. Sure, no one doing the debating is likely to switch sides, but just think about all of the people browsing who don't feel strongly enough to debate or are undecided. Those are the people you're really arguing for.

Agreed, the religion I am apart of believes that true Christianity was lost shorty after the resurrection and there was a "Restoration"

Umm, where does Jesus say kill all sinners? Doesn't he state hate the sin, love the sinner? Love thy neighbor and thy enemy? I'm not very familiar with the Bible but I don't remember it stating that anywhere.

Edit:

Uriel, how can 10% of the Earth's population not be a huge margin?
Also, you aren't christian in the traditional sense because you do not follow biblical law.

Looking at the pie chart, Islam isn't too far behind. I believe its growing faster too, but I'm not sure about that.

I define someone as a Christian if they believe in Jesus Christ

no no dont ask him to elaborate he'll just make it more confusing, observe:

hey Guido, its all so clear to me now. I'm the keeper of the cheese and you're the lemon merchant, you get it? And he knows it. That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it, ya, before he let's loose the marmosets on us. Don't worry little missy, I'll save you.
