So, this is something I've noticed when playing RTS'es online: People play to win! :|
The reason I'm posting this is that I just got rushed for the third time in DoW. I mean, what's the point of playing if the game is over that quick?
Myself, I like to play in character. Mess around. Play with the fun-but-not-so-good units. Enjoy small border skirmishes with two or three squads instead of rushing my opponents base with an army consisting of dreadnaughts.
It's kinda hard to explain, and I'm not doing a good job of it
Roleplay. Would my orks really pursue that fleeing squad or just stay put and laugh? Would my Eldar really deem this world worthy of the presence of an Avatar? Would my Night Elves really abandon that useless outpost to the north just like that? Or would they give their lives for it? Would a real Space Marine commander just keep pumping out squad after squad of marines?
You catch my drift? :)

So, do you roleplay your games and play them "in character", or do you just pump out units and try to win?

I prefer to roleplay, but I find a lot of people don't seem to like doing that. So I prefer to play against bots or single player.

I'm a competative son of a bitch, but since I really don't play that many multiplayer games, my opinion really doesn't matter.

;)

Actually, yeah I'm like that. However most people play to win in the fastest time possible...Which is kinda boring and you don't get to see all the cool things put into the game, precisely to make it interesting in longer more "played" games. They might as well go back to pong really.

Edit: I am the only one who thinks he is a radioactive monkey?

In RTS i play for fun... I only play them on lan with friends so there's no need to win... :)

In CS I purely play for the competitive aspect, like training and trying to win :D

I avoid playing RTSes online with people I don't know for the exact reason that they will rush my ass. Or get me with some other 1337 trick or balance exploit all the cool people online know of.

So yeah, I play fluffy, and usually do so in skirmish mode and stuff.

And don't try to get me with that monkey stuff, I know you're a hamster. Don't deny it.

I don't like to play rts-games online, so fooling around for me.

I used to play Age of Empires competively with some friends... but that was over six years ago... :p I played a couple Starcraft 'ladder' (competitive) games... yeah, pretty much gave that up and just played 'fun' maps and games against the computer. And those are actually the only two good RTS games ever made, so that's the end of that story.

i play games too have fun. starcraft is a prime example of "when games go wrong" its nothing but spamming dragoons now.....

Dawn of War kicks ass when you play long drawn out games when terrirory is constantly changing hands, critical points going down with 6 seconds on the clock.

good times.

RTS: play fun, for fun, not bothered about that kinda stuff, so fluffy.

:)

But FPS.. I'm a competitive sob ;(

I don't really like RTS games much anymore, but I find Generals gives the most ... non-gamey experience if you know what I mean. It's balanced in such a way that it's pretty much possible to counter any rush with less money than the attacker spent if you know it's coming. If you last the first five minutes then you both start to build up bases and it plays out fairly realistically, at least moreso than any other RTS.

I don't even like LOTR, but the new RTS actually looks pretty good. It incoporates natively a lot of the things you said, namely AI enhancements. Watch some of the developer commentary things at gametrailers.com.
