Well, since Valve have spent a long time making the game bug free, I seriously doubt that Vivendi will be able to find anything wrong .... and steam, and well, I think Vivendi WILL accept the first RC if they know whats good for them.

Otherwise, Valve will release it via steam, and gains all the profit ... :p

All we know is that Half-Life's FINAL RC is accepted. I haven't seen it written anywhere that Half-Life's first RC was accepted.

The final hours of half-life article explains it.

They were supposed to be done on a Monday, it was Thursday, one last bug to squash, pressure on Harrington, they finally find it, burn the RC cd, send it off, suddenly nobody has anything to do, they go home play multiplayer, waiting patiently for an answer, they finally get an e-mail on a Saturday saying the rc was approved, they whack the headcrab and celebrate.

It sounds like they knew of the bug, were working hard on finding it, found it, fixed it, sent it off and then everybody finally decided to cool off and relax.

God it must be like deja vu for them right now

I saw the picture of the wakked headcrab but I just couldn't think why they had destroyed it ;)

I just think with all the work they've done and all the delays and push-backs, which they know upsets us all on various levels - they've had to have put together a game polished enough and worthy of release knowing minor things can be easily steamed.

Does anyone know how long it took valve to bug check, caus that would boost my estimates on the RC if i knew they did it for weeks on end.

I think it will be accepted, after all these month's of playing through the game and detecting bugs, there can't be any fatal bugs left. And no game is bug free, there never was one, and there will never be one. The minor bugs can always be patched up along the way.

So, yeah, I guess it's gold in a week or so.

I know these "Friend of a friend" rumors aren't (and shouldn't be) held in high regard around here, but a fellow employee of mine at Best Buy claims that he has an NDA bound beta copy of the game and tells me nothing more than "It's still pretty buggy."

I'd say the first RC probably won't do it.

If he hasn't got a hold on the RC and played that in the last few days, your words just pass right over my head. Swoosh .. W00t ?

Maybe, but a more sensible estimate would be a 2nd rc.

I wanted to vote for the first options but I went for the last one.

less than 24 hours to go people.

I haven't asked him, but I assume he hasn't. In any case, he seemed to convey that at the time (a week ago, when he told me), there were still quite enough bugs that needed ironing.

So due to that, I'll comfortably say that if the first RC goes gold, it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Valve has had the game complete for many months. They have brought people in to test for months, they have been testing it for months. I would be very surprised if there are any show stopper bugs in the RC. This still doesnt mean VU wont find something that requires Valves attention.

thats too short, i need some people to back him up or say how long it really took to bug test the whole game.

But it DID take about 48 hours, or two days. Call it what you will. :farmer:

Not for Valve to bug test it. That was Sierra. Valve spent a long time testing internally before that.

I've read that article many times and it doesn't say that there was only one Release Canditate. In fact, it implies that there were ones before the final one:

A new "release candidate" CD is quickly burned and sent off for final tests.

For all we know, the last bug (The server one) could've been discovered when Sierra tested the RC before that one.

Even though Half Life was assumed to be accepted on the first RC, gabe himself said that is very rare (and I'm seen many people here say the same thing based on other games.)

Plus HL2 is far more complex and using a new in house engine etc and I would assume this would take more checking than the original.

So my vote is 2 RC's. But Valve is also very anal about getting things right, so you just never know.

The game's been finbished since may, I'm sure that taking into account Valve's hard work only the smallest bugs may have scaped their sight so there shouldn't be a reason why not!
