Do you think Valve will ever create non-HL saga games?

I know that they've started to use Steam to sell other products, even if they aren't their own. Will they breach out of Half Life while the saga moves on, or will they finish HL then start another saga?

Emm, I think they'll finish the half-life saga first...

I think the real question is what comes after half-life is over?

the end of all things.

[SARCASM]Knowing the political situation at the moment...[/SARCASM]

But it will / would be good to see what they have planned...
Imagine fantasy Valve style, sorta like the Might and Magic Source version.

A singularity ............. like the one at the dawn of time (at least in this universe anyway :|)

Prospero(tek), a MMORPG involving PSI and kinetic powers.

What about DOD and CS, they are non-hl games (yes they use the same engine)

I know it wasnt orginally them who made them, but they adopted it and made them, so DOD:S is actually ALL made by Valve and the guys that made the orginal from start. And CS is made by Valve, YES I KNOW IT WASNT THEY WHO STARTED IT...stop with that crap, CS was made in Seattle, in their building, at their computers=THEY MADE IT

Actually valve has no more money and are getting out of the game business altogether!

I think they are thinking of developing the next great search 'engine' to beat google!

hanz

They should finish the Half-Life trilogy and then move onto something else.

If they do any more than three they have the danger of becoming like George Lucas, or even worse, id.

I believe that's what they'll do. I was considering making a thread discussing where Valve might go next, but I forgot to.

Trilogy? Its not going to be a trilogy. Doug Lombardi said in an interview in PC ZONE he has no idea where the trilogy idea came from.

Of course it'll be a trilogy, unless you think VALVe aren't going to make another major Half-Life release?

Even if they're not planning it to be a trilogy my statement still stands, I don't think they should do any more than three since three is that magic round number. After that you generally find sequels get worse. They should make one more great Half-Life game, not XX half arsed ones.

Not any time soon. They have a cash cow in Half-Life, there is no reasone to drop it in favour of another game.

I hope that the HL saga ends some time soon cuz in 10-15 years some of us will be dead.

I kinda feel that the 'fantasy' genre is getting a little...old?...overdone?..copied? boring? lame? ew? :(

If Valve stays in existence long enough for them to finish with the Half-Life world and create an entirely new game, I'd like it to be something other than 'fantasy' themed as we know it...and it has to have a first person view :E

I don't think it will be, though, I don't want it to go on forever.

I agree with that, i more meant something that's never been done, Valve creating something fantasy would be a differnet sort of fantasy.

Well, the Source Engine is highly extendable, but I think we will see Half-Life 3 first.

I think valve will never make other games than fps. "If you're born to make fps, it's nothing you can do but to make fps".:D

Just like the FPS genre. The genre doesn't make the game, the developers do.

Fantasy could be awesome if they did the atmosphere right, just like in hl1 and 2

Erm

Counter Strike
Day of Defeat
Team Fortress

They already have

Yea that's true, I was actually thinking that same thing.
It's just, when I think of the word 'fantasy', well I've never come across a fantasy game that had anything interesting/intriguing about it. It's always magic spell this and glowing sword that...then again, I really never tried many fantasy games. I usually take one look and immediately run back to half-life. Anyone know of any really good ones that...aren't lame? :O (i.e. not wow or gw)

Whatever, if Valve were to create a world with elves and trolls and colorful magic sparks everywhere, I'd cry. Let's just hope it would be a 'different sort of fantasy'...and it has to be original...and fun!..visually amazing! and uh...sonically amazing! addictive? oh and a fps :E:E:E

They are doing such a good job, i hope they dont even think about anyuthing else but hl

I concur!
One good one is Arcnuam, old but still alot of fun. (i know it's spelt wrong, can't remember the right spelling) It's a RPG made by the blokes that made Fallout, same style.

But there are some non-Valve mods that are good fantasy...
But all i really want is a Post-Nuke mod. :x But there's never any :(

meh. I'm sure I remember reading a long time ago someone asking gabe if we would have to wait another 6 years for HL3. He said something along the lines of no, as it would be on the source engine. My guess is, once AM is out the door and Christmas is out of the way, development on HL3 will commence.

Pure speculation of course :p

Think, halflifecraft.

"Ready to prosecute."

"Anticitizen!"

I'm hopng for a totally new FPS franchise after HL3. Something really cool and original, lots of action, preferrably set in the not-too-distant future. The HL franchise is awesome but I certainly don't want more than a trilogy (not counting Aftermath, of course).
