*cough* The original DoD...

first there was half-life. then came mods, dod and cs being among the most popular (well, cs being the most popular, but anyway). so if you bought hl by itself, you would get all the mods for it, free. then dod and cs went retail. if you bought those, you got hl and all the mods free. simple system.

now, however, u buy hl2 and you dont get all the mods free. u get most of them, including cs source (only cuz valve didnt feel like making a simple deathmatch mod). i bet if they did make a basic dm or ctf mode for multiplayer, they would charge extra for cs source too! :(

so why must you pay extra for mods. i dont see any bf or UT mods costing money. so why dod? who knows. good marketing i guess.

no doubt hl is more popular game than UT or BF, but a mod is a mod isnt it?

the thing is, total conversion mods such as cs or dod are quite similar to games that licence game engines. MOHAA, for instance, is a single and miltuplayer game built off of the quake 3 engine. dod and cs are multiplayer games built off of the hl engine (or the hl2 engine in this case). there are small differences between licensing a game engine and modding a game, but it's almost the same. so in a sense, modding is a free way of making a seperate game (except that in modding you dont get access to the engine, usually).

the thing about mods is that you can't sell them, unless you get permission from the original developer. well, when a mod gets popular enough, the developer will sell it (actually valve is the only company that seems to make a practice of it).

maybe everything that i said above is crazy, illogical, and completely stupid. imo all mods should be free. how the hell is dod a seperate game now that its source. it has no single player (bots are not single player). the multiplayer wont have tons off maps right off the bat, just like cs source, which plays 7 official maps. no doubt this will increase over time.

dod costing money is lame. i know the developers work hard to make this game a reality, but please, since when does the art of modding include charging people to play your work of art?

They aren't mods anymore.

More like full flegded games....

Errr, I think people are missing an important point here.

Back when DOD first started as a mod, the people who worked on it had a job, and then worked in their spare time DOD since they wanted to. Therefore making DOD was along the lines of a hobby more then anything.

Today, the people who made DOD (and I assume are going to make DOD:S) work for Valve. Because of this, making DOD:S is NOT going to be the hobby that making DOD was, rather, making DOD:S will be work for these people.

Because of this, it is quite right that we be charged for someone's work. Asking that DOD:S be released as a free mod is like saying "Come into the office and work for me, but I'm not going to pay you."

Great quote Diazo. If everyone will read what you posted it should end the discussion in this thread. Thanks for that post.

I think there should be a Silver package in the store too, so if you want to buy HL-s and Dod-s you can do that.
Maybe you dont get it in the package but you should get a key so you can acitvate it on steam.

Is there actually any way of getting DoD:S without getting the silver or gold offer on steam? When i click on purchase options thats all that comes up.

There will be, "soon."

First its not a mod, the dev team was hired by Valve. Thus they have financial stake in the game, and can charge for it. It was a retail game in stores many many months ago as the original DoD. DoD:S is a game that is more popular than all but a handful of games out there(CS, CoD(barely), and a few others).

Its such a ripoff having to pay $10 for DoD:S and the entire steam catalog...(CZ, CZ:DS, OpF, HL, TFC, BS etc etc)

If Valve did not hire the CS and DoD dev team, CS and DoD would NOT have the support they do now, would not have major cash tournaments(CS), and would in no way be ready for shipping with HL2. Do you seriously think that if CS and DoD werent hired bought by valve, that the dev teams would have the game ready anytime soon(CS:S being out BEFORE HL2).

You should be happy that these people made a good product, got noticed by valve and now are getting paid money. Cheapskates.

Hehe.. Yes yes.. Very smart of Valve.. They make a moddable game, then the users start modding it and the popular mods turn into commercial products in the sequel of the game. A smart move indeed. We're living in a world where money is everything. They just make DoD:S better so that everybody would move from the original DoD to DoD:S. It's not illegal, but a very smart move. Valve doesn't have to hire anyone to think a new game for them as there are plenty of players who do it with no cost. Plus they don't have to fear that their game doesn't sell: If mod is popular, it turns into commercial game and as it has been "made greater than the original mod" it will sell like 5$ tickets to moon would. Simple is that. I admire the recourcefulness of Valve because of this :)

Can anyone tell me exactly how i can upgrade from a broze package to a silver one? Would i have to email Valve or something?

You don't have to upgrade, DoD:S will be available for purchase independently for (most likely) around $20.

I have always really hated BF1942....

The way it handles... I just really hate it ....

On a lan with pings like 10ms where everyone has beasty computers it may be bareable otherwise... I hate it

I think not playing the game will remedy the crisis.

I think it has something to do with VU not being able to publish DOD (they don't have the rights) which also contractually affected Bronze on Steam. It's complex. :s

The deepness in this post is incredible

I've already got DOD (the old free downloadable one) ... but Steam won'r recognise it!

VUG couldn't put DOD:S in the retail package of HL2 because Activision has the publishing rights to DOD:S.

This doesn't affect the bronze steam package though. They put it in the silver / gold so more people would buy it :p

if you have to pay for DOD:S then save your money.

instead of paying for some 5 year old mod tarted up with a new game engine, but still essentially the same ugly looking 5yr old game, go and buy BATTLEFIELD 1942.

Oh and download the AWESOME Desert Combat mod for it.
www.desertcombat.com

And get DCX after. Please.

On a side note, I got Secret Weapons of WW2 for BF1942... Looking forward to getting home tonight to try it out. :D
