So Hellrider convinced me to get DoD:S on Steam. I know it's been out a long while, and I did try it when it first came out, but I had dial up then and couldn't get into it.

Played a few rounds and I feel it is a step back in many ways from the original DoD.

*I cannot deploy my BAR as the US, which makes it less of a squad support weapon.

*The Rifleman (and Grenadier, which is also called rifleman for some reason) can no longer melee with their rifle. This hugely decreases their power in CQB, especially for the Germans.

*They got rid of the M3 totally; while it wasn't exactly a historically accurate weapon to have (IIRC only tank crews got it), it was still pretty nice in DoD.

*I can no longer have the M1 carbine as a primary weapon as US. The Bazooka class gets it (why is that even in the game? There are no tanks...), but only 3 mags, which sucks because that was my favorite US class to play as (The Master Sergent with the M1).

*The Gewehr 41 was removed from the game, the semiautomatic rifle the Germans used. This is bad, because it was a fairly decent weapon.

*They removed the MG34, the most common MG in WW2. I felt it was better than the MG42 as it was quicker to reload, deployed quicker, carried more ammo, and never overheated. It was also historically cool because it was, IIRC, the only MG in ww2 that could remote fire.

*Rifle grenades are cool, but less useful than hand grenades in some situations. If they had like 2 hand grenades and 1 rifle grenade, it would have been perfect, or if they made it two different options for one class.

*Automatic weapons such as the MP40 and Thompson take more ammo to kill someone now.

*The use of iron sights is inconsistent. They're on the rifleman's weapons, but they're not on any other weapons, which is a little strange to me.

Anyways, these changes where just weird. If I look hard enough I might find a list as to why they made it the way they did but damn.

I feel your pain, DoD:S is really a different animal when compared to DoD, and especially 1.3. I miss the slower-paced, stop and bandage, tactical(ish) older versions. I agree with you completely about the anti-tank classes, (some people however use them as railguns pretty efficiently, as silly as that is). I still play from time to time, but I'm not so much into the direction Day of Defeat has gone as a series. It seems they threw a lot of their more innovative ideas out the window in favor of turning the game into a re-skinned counter-strike.

Agreed on all points.

Also it used to be raining in donner! Now there's no maps at all with rain! I WANT MY RAIN!

I liked diving for cover into the craters with little puddles in them :(

And they should have re-mapped dod_charlie. That map could have looked beautiful in source.

We already have Day of Defeat. DOD:S is not just a graphical upgrade, there were changes (as you appear to have noticed given your list of them).

It's not the same game, but it's still excellent. I think the main reason they changed what they did is to make the game a little more intense and faster-paced.

I still play both DOD 1.3 and DOD:S, but they're not very similar.

Pretty much any source conversion has been less popular than the original sadly.

The funny thing is that I, and many others I'm sure, would have preferred a graphical/mapping update with very little class/gameplay changes...
But instead I got a beautiful new DoD:S with the all the wrong changes...and a missing favorite map :(

As for Day of Defeat, it just feels outdated. I'm bored of it, so the 'just go play DoD' option doesn't really work for me.

OH WELL, DoD:S can kind still be kind of fun.

Dude, I love the bazooka! It's the only weapon that actually makes me laugh when I watch the ragdoll fly. That, plus, it's the greatest ambush weapon in the game (and as you mentioned a great railgun.)

Cheo, no offense but you complain a lot about a lot of things.

Also, you're wrong about the MG34 being the most common MG in WWII. The MG42 was produced in more numbers.

It's a graphical upgrade but a gameplay, content and valve caring downgrade.

Valve sucks..or.
