Please tell me if im wrong but it seems to me that if (an extreamly nice person) hosted a rip of their DVD then us poor souls with the steam DL copy wouldnt have to DL the game every single time...
please correct me if im wrong but since our games are already validated with steam all we are missing are the files that get installed (either through the cd/DVD or DL)

we could host a BT (BitTorrent) tracker and help out the entire Steam Community...

BTW this is not technically priacy because we own the game and so far there is no way around validation... right?

wow i think the thread topic is throwing people off so i hope a "reply" will get people in here wondering whats going on...

and hey if you dont have the bandwidth or DVD or dont even feel like doing that then no hard feelings but someone please tell me at least what you THINK of the idea will it work, do i need to borrow a friends disc, should i just drop this now, should i sign up valve for every spam and pr0n site ever known? just some feedback plz

You can backup your HL2 game by right clicking on it in STEAM, it says "Backup game files".

Thats if you have it.

heh if i can ever get a "GOOD" DL of it

i plan on it once i can get an install that works

You do not need to download the game every time - you can make a backup of it for later use.

LOL if i could ever get that to work. I keep getting error messages about virtual memory and it not having the rights to it or somethin like that.

i have that problem when i try to re-DL HL2 unless you delete ALL of it including all of the source engine files

clicking delete local game content does not solve it

lol which problem there are oh so many but the big one is:

once i finish downloading the complete game ( all source files included) i can play it ONCE..... YAY (or not) oncee i exit it i get
"Game is Currently Unavailable.
Please Try Again Later"

oh t3h l33tness

then if i try to click the button to delete local content (which only sets HL2 DL back to approx. 70%) i can DL upto 77% exactly once i hit 77% i get

"Win32 StructuredException at 2010F724 : Attempted to read from virtual address 104771643 without appropriate access rights"

so i am re-installing (from 0%) HL2 for the 3rd time since 30 mins pasr release

I'm guessing Fileplanet and others like it will start making a version of steam with HL2 cache available eventually like they did with the others.

ahhhh but the cache takes no time to DL (it does that seperatly) its the source engine its self that takes a long time

am i wrong?

so is it possible to install with the retail cd for a DL validation and not have to have cd every time play

Legally ? No and No.
(1) With the retail version you need the DVD/CD in the drive to play, even though you activated it.
(2) You still have to install steam/activate/register etc etc online with the retail version.
