Does anybody else dislike reading?

I do enjoy reading all sorts of things (I've really started to enjoy reading online articles and National Geographic articles), but I always find reading novels can be more difficult simply because you have to let it hook you. Once it does that I love getting lost inside the world of a novel.

I'm a sucker for Orson Scott Card books (I found out he is a Mormon, who wouldve thunk it?), and I've read a fair amount of Tolkiens books (till I read Simarillion, which was like running into a brick wall). Books such as a Brief History of Time, A Short History of Nearly Everything, and The Velocity of Honey also really interest me.

For me, it doesn't matter if the story interests me or not, in fact, usually I am interested by any story as long as the book isn't going on for 70 pages about character and setting development.

My favorite books I've actually taken the time to read are the Harry Potter books. The books are so much greater than the movies, though the movies are fantastic. I find myself enthralled with Wikipedia pages, however. I love learning new things. Nothing in this world thrills me more than a science book. (With pictures, of course.)

Give me a wikipedia article on a scientific subject, I'll read the whole thing, and the sitings.

I used to be addicted to reading but as of late I squeeze in one chapter a day if that. still i haven't finished a book in like 6 months and i could read a book in a weeks time roughly. i prefer magazines and reading articles on the net. i still would go nuts if I couldn't read anything though. the mind is like a sponge and it likes info no matter where it comes. i just wish we had less Gossip crap in the US and more real news. the 2nd story i saw on the evening news was about a stupid ****ing Russian kid and his goddamn ordeal with being replaced with his old parents.

stupid ****ing story, why don't they ****ing report on something real and important in this world, like the amount of people that died to starvation and aids. or the amount of people that don't have clean drinking water. i'm sick of this damn smoke and mirrors bullshit that ends pretty much nowhere news-wise. heres the dumbest stories that i can remember that literally have no effect on my life or anyone else i can name: Michael Jackson's death, Tiger Wood's infidelity, Ellian Gozalas, etc.

this is why i hate reading or watching the US news tbh. you get lots of fluff and mostly bullshit

I remember at the high point of speed reading I could finish a harry potter in a single period. But since the 4th book came out and my friend said how fast he finished it, I was like "what's the point in that, really" I like savoring the story. Nowadayz, I'm reading maybe 20 pages or so before going to sleep. Though last night I read about 50 because I went earlier than usual due to extenuating circumstances. It was real awesome.

you're probably masturbating more...its the only logical explanation

What does that have to do anything. I realized I gave more of a damn about the story and it wasn't worth to speed through.

once I sat down for 10 hours straight and read the entiriety of "Totalitarianism Comparisons of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia"
Hey I just learned something.

My entire life, I've been reading at a speed I'd imagine the writer talking. But after reading this, I tried reading as fast as I can, and I have to say, reading 3 times faster saves quite a bit of time! Of course, now when I read your posts I read it in an auctioneer voice:

Everything!

nah dude, it was a joke. :|

People who dislike reading scares me, people who admit it without shame scare even more.

I haven't read a good book since 2002. I have however read tons and tons of educational books.

Yeah, but I usually reread the book a lot of times, instead of absorbing everything in one sitting.

Lol yeah, but I'd guess that it might get tiring.

And wtf @ auctioneer guy

Eh, I wouldn't see the point in that. I mean I also reread practically everything I have but probably months or even years down the line.

I hope failing to read something inadvertently leads to your death and wins you a Darwin Award.

I love reading but I always find it difficult to get started on a book. I'll always fill my time by doing something else.

Currently reading 'Bad Science' by Ben Goldacre. It's quite funny really, uncovering the truths about all the bullshit science being fed to the public through media.

Ive only willingly read a handful of books...all by Andy McNab.

Dont know why, just love his style and I dont read enough to branch outward.

Maybe its a 'youth' thing; we read more as we get older. Past 6 months though Ive begun reading every night for about 20 minutes. Ive found it gets me to sleep quicker. More importantly, Ive found it harder to get to sleep if I dont read something.

So now I feel I have to read something every night, even if it means re-reading a book again.

Will probably start buying books now it seems.

[Edit] Something weird; since Ive started reading, I cant fall asleep on my back anymore. Before I started reading, I couldnt fall asleep if I WASNT on my back.

Queue the 'woooooooo' music.

If one catches your interest, make it your goal to just read the first page. But then turn it and away you go :bounce:

Does anybody else dislike breathing?

Jesus ****ing Christ, can some of you get of your pedestal for 5 minutes and not act like douche bags? There are some people out there who actually find it difficult to hold the attention span necessary to sit down and spend a good amount of time reading a book. There's this thing common among young adults called ADD (actually not a made up term!), any of you pricks ever heard of it?

ITT: "If you don't read a lot then you are a drain on society and should just kill yourself"

Personally, I read when I have spare time and I'm generally interested in the material, short of having to read textbooks. I find that taking an adderall and sitting down with a book is a recipe for success, but some people in this thread can easily sit down and read for 10 hours without problem to which I say "good for you".

I have issues sometimes because of my obsessive nature while reading. Having constant and involuntary thoughts running through my head all day makes it tough to read sometimes so that occasionally puts me off. This is in large part due to my battle with OCD but I accept that and do the best I can.

To the OP: Find your motivation. Find some material that really interests you. Read slowly so you absorb the material and are not just simply reading to get to the next chapter. We all have our interests so certain books are going to be easy and some are just going to be painful. You might have ADD or something going on preventing you from maintaining the attention span required to sit down for a while and read. In that case, see if there is an underlying issue. Some people just don't like reading books, it's not a crime. I've found that the older I get the more interested I am in reading and presently I'm trying to get through at least 1 book a month unrelated to coursework.

Ok, continue flaming...

Because they aren't real, these disorders are "all in your mind."

Just like the pain you feel when a loved one dies - it's all in your mind.

It is a crime.

Also lol, blaming ADD and OCD.

So according to you ADD and OCD aren't real? I'd love for you to find a reliable source to base this on. It's one thing to offer an opinion but to dismiss something because you're painfully ignorant about it is another.

Just like the pain you feel when a loved one dies - it's all in your mind.

Attention: ADD and OCD aren't real ladies and gentleman. I repeat, a disorder that affects millions of people worldwide is not real. Bravo.

This is a nice example of "well if I don't have it, it must not be a problem".

Very pathetic, both of you.

Things, like novels, textbooks, long magazine/newspaper articles, or REALLY long posts/threads?

I get bored easily by it. If I hear about a good novel, I simply look it up on Wikipedia, read the plot synopsis, and be done with it. I don't feel like trudging through pages and pages of imagery, character descriptions, and other nitty-gritty details that I don't care about at all.

And when it comes to college textbooks, I can't bother to read more than 3 pages at a time. And I give up the instant that I fail to understand what something means. I usually get by with good grades anyways, so no biggie.

wow did you just make a "stupid books" thread?

also see if they have these types of books in your college library

I just want to amend by previous post a little. That REALLY pissed me the **** off. I know for a fact some of the members here have OCD and other mental issues. Do you understand the toll this kind of shit takes on a person? I really wish I turned out perfect like some of you, I do...but the sad truth is I have to deal with certain problems every day and it's absolutely painful. So trying to tell me, in such a cavalier way, that this is all in my head (which any mental disorder is) is the biggest kind of insult.

I respectfully ask for an apology on the notion that you, and those that may agree with you, don't have a CLUE what you are talking about.

Stern (or is it his wife?) works with autistic kids, so you're automatically in the wrong. There's no way you can argue.

ya my wife currently works with kids with autism and years ago I taught art at a school for kids with special needs. most of my students had downs but a few had autism ..definately not made up. ADD is real too

He's never wrong. Never. Even when he is.

Or maybe his mind is build so it learns/studies/whatever through more practical, hands-on means rather than reading walls of text and remembering it later.

That would be me! I can read documentation for years and still not understand jack about what I was really reading. Hands on is the only way I learn.

Eh, got caught with your phrasing of 'previous post' when you posted after Stern, plus my mind's on the other thread, so forgive me.

But I'm on your side. Really. Read my other post.

K, you're off the list...for now :)

I'm a more visual learner. I find myself asking more questions than being able to answer sometimes...i think i confuse myself.

I don't know whether you're trying to argue the techinical definition of real or whether you're being very dumb.

There's a difference between not being able to read, and disliking reading.

While I'm generally a 'whatever works for you' kind of person, I'm afraid I just find it too outrageous that someone deprive themselves of all the culture, history, beauty, and life that exists within literature. While it may be true that he has a problem that's interfering with it (you're kind of jumping the gun on that assumption, I think), it sounds to me like he just isn't making a very strong effort to get into books. I think only a few people are really condemning him, and no one's being as much of an asshole as you're claiming they are.

I don't whether you're trying to argue the techinical definition of real or whether you're being very dumb.

Haven't heard back from either so I assume they were just trolling.

I'm not saying he has a mental issue, I merely suggested that it is a possibility...and I'm only claiming those who believe ADD and OCD are not real problems are simply ignorant and should probably READ more about them before passing judgment.

VT2 was clearly trolling. The fact that it's in your mind makes it real enough.
