Im guessing that ATI and NVidia are getting ready to release new video cards since a lot of people are upgrading for HL2 or Doom III (as I am). Does anyone has any information about what or when will the next generation of 3d cards will be ?
I just upgraded my pc (P4 3GHz 800FSB; 1GB RAM PC3200) because my old P3 cpu died, but i'm still waiting before buying a videocard.

the next gen of videocards will be pci express, there suppost to be twice as fast as 8x agp but thats a load of {instert}. and they will be out soon

will they be only PCI express ?

I was thinking that they would make two versions, PCI express and AGP 8x since PCI express will only be available this summer and not a lot of people will have it then. Unless the next gens cards are due later.

nah pci express cards dont come for a while (Q3 of 04)
the next gen cards will be AGP 8x

the next cards are supposedly twice the performance as the top of the line cards we have today (probally even more than 2x). the NV40 is going to be announced on the 13th. and the r420 speculated to announce on the 26th. they probally wont be available in stores till one month after their announcement.

the nvidia card (the nv40) will probally be shipped with doom III
and the ati card (r420) will probally be shipped with HL2.

the nv40 will come as the nvidia 6800 and nvidia 6800 ultra (no FX this time)
the r420 will come as the x800 SE, the x800 Pro, and the x800 XT, and maybe a AIW but nobody knows anything about the AIW.

me, ill probally get the 6800 ultra, or x800 pro. whatever is better. but they are going to cost a pretty penny ;)

yeh what x84D80Yx said, thats what ive heard anyways.
ill probably end up just getting a whole new computer late next year, with like pci-express and all that new stuff, for extreme power :D

Go on the forums, you won't find anywhere better for info on graphics hardware. people who work at ATi and (supposedly) Nvidia post there and so do alot of developers.

:hmph: I think the 6800 Ultra is not going to be the "super weapon" Nvidia has to offer, that's if it IS 399. They are probably holding out on a card that is going to be priced 499.

PCI Express is the replacement for AGP, it's a PCI slot that is like super charged. I think it can pull double the speed of the AGP 8x if i remember correctly. It's part of the new BTX boards.

I was thinking of getting one of the new BTX boards when they come out, But anyone know hiow much theyre gonna cost? And can I use my normal PCI card in the PCI-E slots?

Nvidia's N40 AGP version is coming out in a week or so.
ATI's is at the end of April. 23rd or something.
The PCI express versions are later ;)

See attached.

Apparently requires a 500W PSU - see the 2 molex connectors.

I take no responsibility for the accuracy of this post.

256-512 on the ATI cards?? That's ram on a vid card! These new cards are going to be monsters...

Idd, but they are going to be a bit expensive (for me) too: $499 ;(

Consider yourself lucky: here in New Zealand when the 9800XT was first introduced, the cheapest you could find it for was around $1100.

One highlight of Direct X 10 will be the inclusion of virtual memory for graphics cards - lets hope NVIDIA doesn't screw up again.

Just trying to go from memory. Havn't researched it lately.

Hehe, ya I saw that.
I don't think you will go deaf. GPU won't be roasting and your ears should be safe. ;)

I could care less about the slot thing because I have all of my PCI slots empty, although it may matter to some.
One thing that got me was you shouldn't really put something right up against a 9800Pro either. Gotta let it breath. Plus the first PCI slot usually shares an IRQ with something else so normally you wouldn't use it.

I'm interested in how the Board partners will make their coolers. Or if they will be just like the reference card. Should have some better designs out there.

I think that was wise they went with the heatpipe solution. Otherwise it would be a blower for sure. I'm waiting for they anouncement and probably won't put any judgement on until the X800 comes out.

On a different note...
Check this out.
