I really hate the Metal Gear Solid storylines, and the dialogue, and the cinematic directing that goes along with these terrible, terrible pieces of pseudo-cinema.

But what do you think?

I think that the story of the Metal Gear saga rivals the one of the Star Wars saga. Any writer who can make me cry in a VIDEO GAME is amazing, in my book.

Yeah I always thought the story lines were completely shit.

The stories are ****ing amazing, but the dialogue seems too inhuman. Like, it's not SO bad, but it could use some work. I laugh my ass off every time Snake hears someone say something significant, and then repeats it in the form of a question.

"...blah blah blah METAL GEAR IS BAD BLAH BLAH" - DARPA Chief
"..Metal Gear???????" - Snake

I mean, that's just ****ing hilarious.

IN CONCLUSION:

Stories = t3h pwn4ag3!!!11

Dialogue = m0$tlee t3h suxXx!111!

C'mon, the dialogue in MGS3 was great.

I'll give you that MGS2 sucked in every way possible, though.

The storylines are very interesting. The problem comes with most of the dialogue ... which is partially due to translation. A major flaw with his writing is the reliance on long, preachy speeches that either relay tons of backstory in one big info dump or drone on about whatever political issues he's trying to address. It's not very subtle and a more talented storyteller could better integrate it within the context of believable dialogue. Also, I hate the use of supernatural characters/themes but that's just a personal preference.

Regardless, he's an amazing games designer who has made some of the best games I've ever played. While the MGS games might not be the absolute best in terms of dialogue, the combination of one of the best gameplay mechanics out there and a storyline that isn't half-baked make it my personal favorite game series.

One of the best games ever, One of the best designers ever 'nuff said.
And dont ask me why..

I agree with Digi.. One of the best games ever and one of the best stories in a game..

His writing isn't perfect, but compared to the rest of the gaming industry it's damn well near the best. Now his abilities as a game designer is unparalleled save a few, he's some made some of the best games I've ever played.

oh my god never compare metal gear to star wars ever again!

I think he can make a trippy story, and that's about it. The games themselves are boring. I don't care if this post seems unfair or what-have-you, I'm deciding to finally put my opinion out there with no buttering up like I usually do.

He's terrible. The man is an awful, awful, awful writer. The dialogue is far from natural, and the storyline, whilst it can prove interesting, is at ok at best. Kojima needs to pull his head out of his egotistical ass and find someone who can actually write.

MGS series is in the top 5 of greatest game series ever in my opinion. His dialogue may not be perfect, but I've never had any problems and his plots are always excellent. Like I've always said, there's some translation problems with his dialogue since he doesn't speak English. Translations aren't always perfect, but I see no major problem. MGS games are just about the only games that ever had something to say and actually made me emotional just playing them. The last 30 minutes of MGS3...wow. The man is amazing.

I think the translations are more apparant, but it doesn't stand for the whole script. Which most of the time, pretty much sucks. He just can't convey his ideas through the context of the game, so instead, piles it out in massive, boring and downright dull speeches. I don't think any of them are decent to listen to.

I'm tempted to ask how old you are. I mean, i can see some people crying with a few video games here and there, but something like Metal Gear? Metal Gear! Metal Gear?(snake snake lol).

I've played all the games and i know the storyline. Its terrible. Its the kind of B-grade shit you see on midday TV, except instead of just 2 hours of it, its ****ing 12-15 hours of it. After i finished Metal Gear Solid, i wanted to kill Kojima. Maybe not kill him but run him down with my car, numerous times, in quick succesion.

So yeah i hate him.

So why did you keep playing after the first one if you hated it so much :|. If I hate one game, I'm not going to bother playing its sequels.

I can answer this. The reason I have played all three solid games (through friends or rental usually) is because certain people online (not anyone here) will tell me about how awesome it is, and "You're biased. Just because you didn't like the second and first doesn't mean you won't like the third. If you try it fully, you WILL like it!".

And of course, I'm the type that likes to give everything a fair trail if I've got something to say on the matter, try to inform myself. This, for me, is why.

Same, I like to give everything a spin. I knew when I bought Quake 4 I was on the verge of wasting my money, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. Who knows - could have been fun. (Could..)

The dialoge is rather horrible (never played 3 though). Snake repeats everything in form of a question.
"Just a box..."
"Just a box?"
"!"

QFTE. Also, we all have different tastes and opinions, so I really don't see the point of this thread unless you're doing some sort of research on peoples opinions on Kojima :p

He's great. I love his awkward humour.

MGS2 Story was hilarious, I remember at one point in the game youre taken to Arsenal Gear and you run around naked covering up your non-existant groin.

At that point the "Turn off the console." crap completely shat on the story for me.

Oh god never remind me of Nude Raiden again.

Overrated. The games have always had god awful movement and camera. The story tries to get all up and preachy while piling on the BS.

I do like the cutscenes though.

I voted terrible. Some of the stuff he makes characters say just isn't natural; it isn't what someone in that situation would say.

I'm sure when I'm surrounded by zombified Combine soldiers with nades, I'll say "ZOMBINES LOL"

Lol.
Anyway...that Raiden thing was pretty funny, it made for a good laugh.

Really now is it. And yet it does not seem odd to you that one man can defeat 10 freaking metal gears and hunderds of special forces soldiers. It doesn't seem odd to you that a MIT scinetist can defeat hunderds of soliders and spec ops, while batteling headcrabs.
And this isn't just meant for you it's for all the people here whith this kind of arguments.

What videogame has perfect dialogue, and situations that would make perfect sense in real life?

In his defense, real life is far wierder then fiction, fiction actually has to make sense atleast on a certain level, which mgs2 does.
