I know it's old news, and a repost, etc. but it's worth it. something i was wondering about, and a significant piece of info in light of the E3 Demos coming out.

I personaly thought that alot of the expresions used in the E3 demo's looked a little over exagerated. Were they toned up to show off the new system, or are they like that in game?

Replay from Gabe:
You're the first person who has commented on the exagerated nature of the animations. When we were testing the demo with people, (we think because they were only seeing them for a short period of time and were used to thinking of game characters as very wooden), the more we broadened the expressions, the better people thought the character system was. "Turn it up to 11!" Anyhow, it embarassed our animators but it worked in the demo. The game itself is naturalistic.

that's incredible! congrats to valve once again.

Interesting.

It would be kind of cool if you could set the 'expression' level as an option in the game. lol

good post, I was fearing that the exaggurated expressions would become a large annoyance in the game, but that cleared it up!
Also nice Spinal Tap movie reference by Gabe :D

If they wanted to "turn it up to 11" why not make 10 the most exagerated.

I found them a lil' over the top but I figured valve would fix it, like always.

Uh, I never noticed any exaggerated expressions in the movie. Yeah, maybe the G-Man but I think it's actually cool that he does that. :)

For me, it was the most noticable in the scene with Alyx and the Dr. guy.

She is a girl for God's sake. You people never met a girl or something .. they are all like that :)

yeh the only exagerated expression i saw was Alyx just before the scanners came and she gave you a gun

I thought the G-Man looked perfectly normal. Alyx didn't though. Yep.

there's somthing very spinal tap going on around here... :)

"The numbers all go to eleven. Look...right across the board."--Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), explaining the volume controls on his amplifiers
"Ahh...oh, I see..."--Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner)
"Eleven...eleven...eleven..."--Nigel
"And most of these amps go up to ten."--Marty
"Exactly."--Nigel
"Does that mean it's...louder? Is it any louder?"--Marty
"Well, it's one louder, isn't it?"--Nigel
"Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?"--Marty
"[Pause]... These go to eleven."--Nigel

Most obvious exaggerated one was where Alyx looked really scared, a bit too scared.....

Hes just somone who knows what women are really like, rather than falling into the catagory of:

- My woman controls me

- I am trying to act mature so women will like me, but in fact will walk all over me and end up controling me.

I found the acting just fine. C'mon people, the voice acting was 1st class, you know, the characters in the screen aren't really talking themselves, is some guy/girl talking in a studio. But looking at the videos you don't notice that, it's just a scene happening in front of you. About the over-reacting, if you just found a scanner trought a window, knowing it means the combine are going to hunt you down in a few moments, it's not like "Heh, yeah, let me finish this fag and then we will slowy walk away."

Another greats things:
Almost the entire sequence, at first she is like flirting with you, isn't she? (I mean, I don't understand all she says then, could you write it down? Notice how she moves her eyebrows when saying "staring at me again" :naughty:
When the "clank" sounds, the little scared jump, then the rolling eyes at the Dr.
The gesture she does when saying "this thing running"
The Dr.Kleiner gesture when saying "Now, now..." , then how he stops for a second writing in the keyboard to check the screen, moving up all his body a little.

And so on... If all the "scripted" sequences in HL2 holds to the quality of this one, it's not only going to be the most enjoyable single player experience ever, but also the acting is beating a lot of Hollywood movies.
