if you buy the game using the subscription fee and play it for 5 years(and you get the extra content they make free) it will cost you 600 dollars

just use the method where you purchase each game. in the long run you will save more of your money, you would have to buy 6 $100
games! to equal that!

just trying to help out those people who will use the subscription

jesus christ.. 5 years

during that time you will probably get 10+ games to download saving you aboout 500$

who the hell cares. Ever play an MMORPG? Didn't think so. Ever rent a video game from blockbuster or somewhere? If you rent 2 or 3 games that's at least 10 bucks, and for 9.95 a month you get half-life 2, all that extra content, and TF2 for free. TF2 would be an extra 50 bucks if you bought it retial. I think it's a pretty good deal.

Also, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO USE THE SUBSCRIPTION OPTION.If you want to be a cheap ass and not pay 9.95 per month then just buy the retail version.

10+ games? With the current publishing frequency of Valve, I find that a bit implausible. :)

yeah I had 3 daoc accounts at 12.95$ per month for almost a year. Then I tried planetside 12$ and swg 15$. And with those games you gotta dish out 50$ for the games too.

lol i think it's 9.99$ per month until you reached 50-60$ of the game value and after that it's free... that would make sence.

No, it's not. The whole point is that you can download expansions and new games put out by Valve.

Well they are a company 100 times larger then they were when HL1 came out and now they have their own game engine so they can crank out games left and right.

The had many spin offs to HL come out as well. OPforce, Ble Shift, CZ is comming out soon.

sorry maybe its just me but i only buy maybe a 1 game or 2 games every couple years, i guess i only prefer the great quality games, not shitty things that have no value and get boring in a couple hours...

oh yeah...anyone heard mention if they will sell CS:CZ thru steam?(sorry haven't really been following CZ after the announcement of HL2)

actually yes i have played planetside, but i dont pay any subscriptions ;)
but thats my little secret...

yes so say half life is 100 dollars and team fortress 2 is 100 dollars and counter strike is 100 dollars and day of defeat is 100 dollars

thats only 400 dollars ....personally thats enough games to keep me busy for 5 years plus i doubt they will all be 100 dollars and the fact that you still have 200 dollars left over to buy more games if you want is pretty good.......

Yes, CS:CZ will be sold via steam. In fact, it should be launched right when the new version of steam is launched (i.e., soon)

Enough of this nonsense already. Just stfu, wait & see.

Ever think that some people might not want to play HL2 for 5 years? A lot of people will finish the single player in a couple weeks and have no interest in multiplayer... so they will have paid 10 bucks. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Other people will want to play HL2 SP, 2 different expansion packs, 3 multiplayer games, and a sequel. Buying all these separately at the store might cost 250 bucks. But renting them all for a whole year would only cost 120 bucks. Again, sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

There's a lot of threads like this where people are trying to think up situations where paying subscription wouldn't make sense. Of course there are scenarios where it wouldn't make sense, buying HL2 wouldn't make much sense if you lived in a house without electricity either guys. Apparently you're not realizing there are a lot of scenarios where paying subscription WOULD make sense financially.

if its not for you dont buy it... they give you a choice! cant you understand its a choice? no one is forced to buy every valve game. However I would probably go for the 10$ per month considering there are at least 5 games I want to buy that will be comming out in the near future HL2, CS:CZ, DOD2, CS2, TF2. There will no doubt be single player games based on HL2 released... Who knows what else could be released soon. Take HL2 and CZ thats 100$ 10 months there alone. I like to play a lot of games and 10$ per month wont break the bank. I spend more on food in one day then that.

Poisonspider did you happen to read the sticky on top of the board?

well half life2's multiplayer is what made it so great with all its mods (counter strike) its what keeped it alive is its multiplayer, and also they said multiplayer will be something really great and special.... :p

Subscription option is NOT for people who are planning on playing HL2 or other Valve products for long periods of time!

It is simply for people who will only play it once in a while. If anyone is stupid enough to pay $10 a month for the next few years when you can get the exact same thing for much less then they have some serious problems.

If you CAN just pay 10 dollars, finish the singleplayer in a month, then not pay anymore... WOW... a new game for 10 dollars?! That's unheard of!

look poisonspider, if you don't want to pay the 10 bucks per month, then STFU and buy the Retail version!

good show ;).....

yes but there will be a lot of content to keep you playing

that is a way to umm "save" but you would also save if you would have paid for many other valve games.

IM NOT/ AND WASNT TRYING TO ARGUE here

im just having a nice chat......ok cool.......yes 10 dollars for a game is a great deal . i cant imagine someone not playing multiplayer and mods for years to come......i guess their will be people, silly willies!

Yeah, $50 is being quite a cheap ass, opposed to say people that warez it off IRC. If Valve starts pumping out high-quality multiplayer components and mods within the first couple months of Half-Life 2's release, then I'll consider the subscription. But what's the incentive to get one if it takes Valve say, another three months to release TF2? That'll be about $30 down the drain from the interim.

This is why stupid people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

[EDIT] I stand by it, even if you were kidding. Stuff like that is not funny, anymore.

Hey man, it's not his fault that Para decided to come in here and play admin. So don't bash him for defending his topic from spammer admin-wanna-be's.

Anyway, I don't see why anyone wouldn't buy the retail. Pay 50 bucks once, and I can keep the game for as long as I want, and download every single mod that can possibly fit into my hard drive for no monthly cost at all. Why do you need to buy a mod for HL when it's freely available for download? Like DOD, there were a bunch of people who bought the DOD retail when they had the original HL. Same with CS. Bunch of morons if you ask me (and no they weren't gifts).

Whatever though, I'd rather buy the retail and have as long as I want to play instead of only having a limited time to play. Do whatever you want with HL2 and Steam. I dont want nor need to explain my point in a lengthy post to you guys. See ya's for now.

Well, another suggestion, buy half life 2 sp/mp for $50. Thats 5 months worth of subscription. So for 5 months play HL2 sp/mp/public mods, and come march 2004, if it seems like valve is really pumping out the high quality retail mods, go for the subscription. It comes out to paying $10 a month anyways and I know I'm going to do this simply because HL2 (including public mods) should keep me busy for 5 months or more. Or even if you decide to go for the subscription earlier you still haven't lost anything really since you have a copy of HL2 to keep, otherwise, it is my understanding, the $10/month is only renting so once you stop paying you lose HL2.

I think Valve made a VERY stupid move with this pricing plan. I mean, your going to alienate a lot of people who don't know what the hell this stuff is. Even people who only play games they see in the store and think the back of the box makes it sound cool still expect to see a multiplayer, and your kinda cheating them to leave it out. If the middle of the road package costs more than $50, it will turn off a lot of people who are mainly in it for the multiplayer and don't care about single player. No one with half a head on their shoulders is going to pay monthly for a game which is dependent up the players to run servers, thats just dumb. The Special Edition is a good idea, but it should be the only other version of the game.

Something else that has me worried - Valve is going to expect us to pay for feature's that should be added in a patch. It's easier than ever to pull of with Steam, and it would really ruin the games longevity. Valve is losing site of what made HL1 so great, it was extremely accessible to everyone and had great, FREE expansions (mods). I think Valve may be overestimating both HL2 and the community's fascination with HL2. They don't have the game to end all games here, they have an extremely good game - but that doesn't mean the majority of people are willing to pay unreasonable prices for it - including me.

Last but certainly not least, this makes the games extremely easy to warez. If you pay $10 and download everything Valve has to offer and then cancel it, you can be damn sure people will release cracks to make the game still run. In addition to this you could even play online on other master servers like Gamespy.

Wait a minute, so we can't get mods or patches if we don't pay the subscription? Please, please tell me this is not true.

No, not true. At least thats the concensus here. Patches, mods come with the normal retail version for free (SP+MP), just like with HL. Subscription is so you can download pay mods (if a mod team decides to risk charging for theirs), or official Valve releases (TF2/CS2) at no extra cost to the $9.95 per month fee. If you don't want to subscribe, you will have to purchase TF2 and CS2 as retail, instead of downloading them.

It's not true. And I'm tempted to call you a moron.

You don't get COMERCIAL ADDONS/EXPANSIONS (you can call them mods if you want) for free but you DO get MP, patches, and FREE mods.

valves known upcoming games
CSCZ
TF2
DOD2
That vampire game?
NS most likley will go retail

Plus any new mods that decide to go retail will be included in this..Ill be buying the HL2 at stores but also will get the subscription.

no monthly fee for me :dozey: ... ide rather spend more cash

No, thats a sequel to 'Vampire: The Masquerade,' a 3D action/rpg released several years ago. The only connection to Valve is the leasing of the Source engine for its development.

Thanks for clearing that up. Also, I'm not a moron I'm just confused due to the fact that I don't know much about this crazy new pay-to-play idea everyone's fired up about, considering this post that was under mine:
