So I've finished Hl2 and recently read that website with the backstory for Hl1 and Hl2 but I still don't understand one thing - who were the soldiers that you fought in Hl1? They can't be combine because they don't wear gas masks or anything and you can see their (human) faces. Who employed them and why were they trying to kill Freeman?

I don't doubt that the answer is obvious and I'm just being a bit thick, but would anyone care to enlighten me?

Thanks.

I think those soldiers were sent in form the government to silence the lambada mishap that occured at The Black Mesa Reasearch faciliies

They were sent for a cover up. Same thing as the assasins. Once the gi's were failing etc. I might be wrong + i have another idea.

This is actually a pretty interesting question....we dont know why the marines were sent in. Presumably to cover it up but that means the government knew what was happening and thought that it would all be okay...
I presume once they were alerted to the fact that something had ****ed up they didn't want word of it leaking out to the public and causing panic.
BUT when the portal opened up during the cascade, did the xen aliens come just to black mesa or the whole planet at that time?

Either way that government was in for a shock, combine style :sniper:

They were marines sent in to clean things up, didn't get told what exactly or why, just sent in and told to shoot anything, didn't do very well so the black ops were sent in as a backup plan to make entirely sure it was all cleaned up and those at the top that authorised it didn't have any paper trails leading back to them. Though as HL2 shows, it didn't really matter in the end.

Most people concluded that they were there to do some coverup but there was never any real evidence that they're there only for that...

What other possible use is there for American grunts other than cannon fodder and cleanup? :p

well target practice :sniper: :E
hehe but yeah i agree with u, the marines were sent in to "clean up" the mess and kill anything that moves.

mightprawn, if u haven't played Opposing Force yet, i would recommend u do, its a worthy expansion to HL1 and does explain some things.

I also want to know about this, its been troubling me for some time now.

Well, you will encounter combine-xen soldiers in HL1. they are known as the Grunts. Anyway, those marines are sent to kill everyone in BM... especially you.

So, in hl2. they either were killed fighting the combine when they invaded or surrendered and are now among the oppressed populace like regular citizens throughout the numbered cities.
