Mods didn't seem to mind last time I posted hihglights from a mag article, and since people seemed to appreciate it I'll have another go.

This is from the new PCZone. The screenshots from this article can be found here: http://www.planetdoom.com/doom3/screenshots/official/

They are affocial, not scans. The itallic text is me just paraphrasing, the rest is directly quoted from the article.........

....Doom³ is the most atmospheric shooter of all time...

...Doom³ is the most visually stunning and atmospheric piece of software on the planet...

Thankfully, it won't be all guns, guns, from the off. As Tim explains, you'll get a chance to get your bearings first, as well as being thrown a few teasers to get you into the mood for the story ahead. "When you arrive at UAC, you'll have the option to explore a limited amount of the facility before the demonic invasion takes place. You can explore some of the more administrative areas, talk with other characters and learn about whats going on with the experiments, while discovering some secrets about other main characters."

"We're leaning towards crazy puzzles to make hell an unsettling place."

"We have a scenario where you find these tanks of dead demons that the UAC have discovered. All the tanks glow with an eerie light and you have to make your way through the facility using just that illumination as your guide." And will one of them burst out of their tanks at you? "If I were to tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise when they do, now would it?" he told us. "Sometimes the anticipation of whats ging to happen can be more frightening than the event itself"

....id software has seen fit to book you a trip to hell as part of Doom³'s wil ride of bloodshed, the thoughtful souls. Propelled into the fire in order to retrieve a special item essential for the completion of your mission, you can expect a none-too-friendly reception, as well as a drastic change in setting and gameplay mechanics to boot.

"When you get to hell, you'll find your stamina is hugely affected." explains Tim. "Your environment will be totally different and affects your movement around this world. We're leaning towards crazy interactive puzzles, which will turn you in all sorts of different directions in order to make hell a really unsettling place - you never know what's going to happen next. The world is very dynamic and fluid, unlike the man-made areas on the base."

Contrary to what many believe, Doom³ is shaping up to be anything but a boot-it-and-shoot-it, linear and unoriginal FPS encased in a jaw-dislocating engine. Graphically, it's clearly untouchable, but as we spoke to Tim it became evident there's more to Doom³ 's gameplay than the ill-informed would have you believe.

"We have situations where we orchestrate the events which will happen to you,. But we also have situations based on what you do. The characters and even parts of the environment will be reacting dynamically to you." This dynamic environment is probably best hihglighted by the way the AI reacts to you. Whereas in the past, many shooters would throw you into a battle where the AI's sole goal was too shoot/bite/kick/stab you to death, Doom³ 's nasties are rather more intelligent. Take the terrifying Archvile, for example, one of several enemies resurrected and given a makeover from the original game.........."The Archvile can now call in monsters. If you walk into a room and there's a lot of overhead room, the Archvile may call in some flying creatures. But if you try and hide in the ducts, he'll try to call in some smaller maggot-like creatures to get you. Basically, he'll summon the type of creature he needs to find or kill you." ..............."Our creatures will know where you are, they'll set up ambushes for you, they'll hunt you, they'll follow you. We've got some areas where if you get carried away and start shooting out the lights, they'll start to close in around you. ....They can smell your fear."

"We've added a GUI to the computer systems throughout the UAC........"It's a very powerfull interactive paradigm and doesn't require additional controls. You interact with the GUIs the same way you interact with a webpage, and the graphics are presented with a Flash-like level or interactive quality. The computers can control anything from complex machinery to turning off the lights in a room.

New enemy is revealed, the Vagary.

-It has the body of a spider and the torso of a female.

-it will be fast an vicious

-it is equipped with both a web and claw attack
.

You will interact with NPCs. They will...

-Provide priceless nuggets of information.

-aid you in particularly tricky areas of the game

-Help feed the story and give backround-information.

The UAC is paranoid about eomployees stealing technology, so they have hidden rooms packed with good stuff throughout the facility.

The BFG, which is still under development, will resemble the BFG from the orignial dooms and not the BFG from quake3. The chaingun has two modes of fire, rapid rate and long-distance accuracy. Rockets are physically simulated, so you will be able to knock them out of the air with other weapons, like the plasma gun. In addition to the berserker pack, there will also be invisibility and IR in MP. The SoulCube was created millions of years ago by an ancient race of Mars, who used it to drive back the forces of hell.

The way Doom³ is shaping up, it's looking more and more likely that it will live up to it's hype.....A re-imagining of it's predecessors rather than a recreation, both fans of the originals and newcomers will no doubt find plenty to get excited about.

Hmmm, this has actually changed my view on Doom3.
I thought it was only going to be a mindless blast-them-to-pieces with a little story thrown in to make it look good, but it seems that I was mistaken.

Damn you Pseudonym_, you've made me want to buy the game! :P

Wow... this sounds great. I just can't wait for this part:

"We have a scenario where you find these tanks of dead demons that the UAC have discovered. All the tanks glow with an eerie light and you have to make your way through the facility using just that illumination as your guide." And will one of them burst out of their tanks at you? "If I were to tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise when they do, now would it?" he told us. "Sometimes the anticipation of whats ging to happen can be more frightening than the event itself"

Sounds amazing!

Reading the preview gave me a boner

Wtf? Btw great preview and pics..

-edit- holy crap, I'm getting my pants scared off just looking at the pics..

WoW, This game is on top of my list next summer.

Is Doom 3 a remake of the original or a whole new story?

Also what was the plot of Doom?

Is Doom 3 a remake of the original or a whole new story?

A bit of both. the originals didn't havemuch of a story. basically, the booklet provided the backstory and the game was basically just a shoot fest. but this new one is based on the same backstory, but this time they have a much more in-depth story included in the game, with many elements that were never a part of the originals. As the article says, it's a re-imagining rather than a re-creation.

Also what was the plot of Doom?

Basically, scientists working at the UAC base on Phobos were experimenting with teleportation devices. Something happened that opened a rift to hell and hellspawn invaded the base.

amazing...and the whole html GUI is way better than a "USE BUTTON"....way cooler looking too.

I'd really like to see another movie to see how those awesome character models MOVE...

Another piece of information from the Gamestar article a little while back. Willits says that Doom³ uses a server-client method now, and is no longer peer-to-peer.

When I read this not only did I get a boner like the person above but I also pooped my pants and threw up all over my keyboard. Got too excited :/

this makes me want doom3 even more, as much as hl2 at the least. I can't wait to ekindle my youthly experiences.

Man, that sounds like so much fun. I can't wait.

anf the bfg, oh god yes. they actually made it the big f---in gun it sounds like. quake3's was weak, the bfg means it destroys the whole goddamn planet when you shoot it. best weapon ever.

I'm content to wait for DOOM, but you can sure as hell bet I'll buy it when it comes out. (Barring a Daikatana-type scenario.)

The Story So Far...
You are a marine, one of Earth's Toughest, hardened in combat and trained for acrtion. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians, He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transfered to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation.

The UAC is a Multi-planetary congolmerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and it's two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for 50 million miles, your day consisted of suckin; dust and watchin' resticted flicks in the rec room.

For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research om inter-dimensional space travel. So far, they have been able toopen gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military 'volunteers' entering them have either disappeared or have been stricken with a strange form of insanity-babbling vulgarities, bludgeongoing anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of a full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the research is suffering a small set back, but everything is under control.

A few hours ago, Mars recieved a garbled message from Phobos. 'We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone beserk1' The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsucessful.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for 50 million miles were sent up to Phobos pronto. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team were inside. For several hours, your radio picked up sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You

Things aren't looking to good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving you only with a pistol. If only you could get your hands on a plasma rifle, or even a shotgun you could take a few downon your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower some where in the station.

As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you are here... There is no turning back.

Wow, this sounds better than I originally thought. They're actually making it more than a graphically intense shoot-em-up... They're going to use plot and AI unlike the first two.

u are joking... right??? u saw the last thread... well...
<.<
>.>...
SURE... i'll continue with my nobel prize winning story!

The Story Continues...

Back at last. After days of hard fighting in space, you've returned home on well-earned leave. You're one of Earth's crack soldiers, hard-bitten, tough, and heavily-armed. When the alien invasion struck Mars, you were the first on the scene. By killing, killing, and killing, you won. You stopped the invasion, saved Mars' base, and became a war hero. What they don't talk so much about is that you were the only survivor.

But that's all behind you now. You've quit the military, and are heading home. Your drop od lands with a crunch. You open 'er up, and look out. Damn! The city ahead is on fire. What the devil is going on? You stagger forward, clutching your sidearm. Packs of refugees are fleeing the flaming metropolis. A band of them shriek in terror. You squint. What's that? Someone is attacking the refugees. You rush up and blast away, killing the troublemaker. It looks like a human, but something is not right. His mouth is filled with half-chewed flesh, and he's all messed up like a zombie from a bad horror mov... Hell, not again!

You can feel it. It's starting all over agian, just like on Mars. First, the people are taken over, turned into cannibal Things. Then the real horror starts, the deformed monstrosities from... "Outside". But now it's on Earth!

It turns out that the invaders are all over. Monsters range from Tokyo to Timbuktu, from Stockhokm to Scranton. Billions are dead. Some people have been transformed into flesh eating mutants, but a few, a very few, are still alive and still fully human. The wise men of humanity have evolved a plan to save what's left to save of the human race. They have built enormous ships to carry the remaing people into space, safely away from the ruined world.

But...

Unfortunately, Earth's only remaining ground spaceport has just been taken over by the demons. They've instituated a sort of force field - a flame barrier - over the port; no ships can take off or land. You gotta go back in action. The pathetic remnants of Earth's soldiers are making an assaulton the invaders at the spaceport. If you win, you might be able to turn off the barrier, so the ships can leave, and Homo sapiens may not go extinct just yet. If you lose, that's it. Humanity is history.

You and your comrades make their attack. Soon, brave men drop like flies. You lose track of your friends, though sometimes you can hear them scream when they die, and the sounds of combat echo deep within the starbase.

Something hisses with a range from thr steel tunnels ahead. They know you're back. They have no pity, mercy, take no quarter, a crave none. They're the perfect enemy, in a way. No one's left but you. You... and them....
