Hi, I'm totally new to the Doom 3 series and didn't even think I'd buy it, but I got a good tax return (thank you government of Canada) and it seems I can afford it.

So, I'm curious. Besides the graphics (which, hands down, I drool over) what other innovations can we expect in Doom 3 (like the Manipulator in HL2 or the use of realistic facial animation).

Remember, the more good things you can name the closer you get me to support the Doom 3 franchise :)

per-pixel hit detection on characters.... or something like that....

Honestly, I don't think there will be very many (if any) gameplay innovations. The game looks like a standard FPS.. the draw is the horror part, which should really scare the bajeezus of you.

Past being scared, and great graphics, I'm not really thinking D3 will be groundbreaking in terms of innovation

Edit: Oh, we're talking engine innovations? Rar, I'll just let someone else handle that..
/me is lazy

You haven't played the originals though...

But if I had to pick, I think that the fear factor will entice most gamers due to the lighting and such.

Just wait for Devilphish.. he knows his Doom 3 :x

Someone correct me if I'm off but hasn't SOF2 got per pixel hit detection in it's Ghoul 2 technology? I'm not sure that D3 will be innovative but rather just a fun old skool shooter.

I would shit my pants if there is going to be client-side hit detection... but i doubt it :( (112k dialup here)...

It is per-poly not per-pixel and there is a big difference. I think Ghoul 2 was just alot of hitboxes stacked ontop of each other.

Doom 3 is worth getting for the MODs alone, dont worry about how the game is gonna play just remember all the cool stuff you will be able to download for free that will look as good as Doom 3 and that is reason for anyone to get the game.

Ghoul 2 was mainly for the dismemberment. As I recall SOF2 was being advertized as a bloody-SP game. Of course, it became a MP hit. I remember when the mptest came out with the shop map. Man, I spent a ton of time playing that demo.

That's just a fancy way of saying "Decals"....seriously this is just decals, like in Far cry, like in Half life 2. :dozey:

If you think you'll shoot the zombie in it's stomach and see "his insides", dream on. Localized rag dolls seem to be there - but basically per pixel hit detection is just decals at the place you hit and the zmobie's act as though they've been hit there (e.g: as in the leg)

I don't know why you guys make such a fuss over it - but the D3 alpha proved it was nothing totally revoltionary - just "another" feature.

Actually this per-pixel hit detection is more to do with Multiplayer.
For example. sometimes in counter-strike you can aim just to the left or right of a persons head and hit them even though it actually should miss in real life. Now, you actually have to hit them. Its not much of a difference when you think about it but according to the guys at iD it actually is

The graphics combined with all the features will make the horror aspect far more intense than any other game out there. The hell levels could be especially interesting. When you see a corpse that is being disembowled, screaming and writhing in agony and surrounded in a pool of blood....yes...it's going to look fantastic with those graphics and extremely disturbing.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people physically cannot play it because it keeps them in a state of anxiety for too long. Alien Vs Predator atmosphere times 10 is what i'm hoping for.

But lazicsavo is asking what are those other features?

Other than graphics, and the supposedly per-pixel hit detection, what else?

Sure It'll try to improve the typical ambient sounds and atmosphere in a survival horror game, but what exactly does it bring new to the table other than that? That's what lazicsavo is asking. :)

Oh so he's looking at innovation from a purely technical point of view. Well it adds nothing worth jizzing except the graphics which are just beautiful. It's still just an FPS, with physics, facial animations, very high poly character models, dynamic lighting , and a whole bunch of other stuff that's already out there.

The main reason i'm excited is the way in which iD use all those features to create an immersive and terrifying experience.

As for the manipulator in HL2. I think it's the most overhyped feature in a game i've ever seen. In the leak it loses it's fun factor after about 10-15 minutes. You adapt and suddenly it's an accepted part of the gameplay. That's only my point of view and not fact.

You're going to be pretty dissappointed with the atmosphere then. Most of the time the game will be scary but you'll be so pumped from the action thats going on (at least in the later parts of the game, i'm guessing) that you won't care if there are 10 demons trying to kill you, you'll just be shooting everything that moves. Also, other then zombies, the monsters look quite easy to kill.

Well there's that scene in the leak that had exactly what i'm looking forward to.

You walk into a bathroom with blood on the floor and a mirror. I looked into the mirror and admired the reflection, then in the reflection i saw something moving, it was ****ing demon coming out of the shadows. I think it plays a little in game cinematic then cuts back to the action. You start blasting away and eventually kill the thing. Then shoot it's body and watch the flesh jiggle realistically, mmmm that looked nice. That scene certainly got the adrenaline flowing and heart rate racing.

I just hope they mix it up with tense 1 on 1 encounters and all out marine vs 10 demon chaos.
