OK, first think I'm going to say, is that this thread contains

SPOILERS, but if you don't intend on playing the game or paying any attention to the story, read on!

Secondly, this has probably been noticed by EVERY Doom fan on the planet, is a well known fact, and you'll all laugh at me for not knowing sooner. So therefore, this thread is dedicated to everyone who is too lazy to play the game and find out for themselves- or the people who just simply didn't notice or particularly care the first time round.

Thirdly: Yes, I'm still playing the game through. I bought the game on the 8th of August 2004 according to my first save, and I'm STILL playing it. A year has to be the longest time it's taken me to complete a game. I guess Doom3 is just best in small chunks :P

Anyway. I'll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible, because it's pretty much unrelated to the main plot.

Late in the game, in the old labs above the dig site, you'll come across four stone tablets; with an audio file commentating on them. I'm going to post pictures of each tablet, along with a short commentary about it, along with other information I picked up in PDA files. By the time you've finished reading this little discription, you should have figured out why Doom3 isn't REALLY a remake after all :)

Background info.
The "Civilisation" I will be referring to is the race that build the ruins (that Doom3 centres around). They made the portal to hell, releasing the demons. Hence, there are Demons on mars. Until now, the game has implied that the ruins were created by the Demons themselves, but these tablets and commentary suggest the opposite. NOTE: I haven't actually seen the ruins yet, as I'm on the 3rd to last level or something.

First tablet.

The commentry says that this tablet is describing the teleport technology used by the ancient race. We already know that the ancient race could teleport to earth abd back, due to some PDA information. So the "Ancient Race" had sophistocated technology...

Second Tablet.

The commentary mentions of a "war" between the ancient race and these Demons. As you can see from the tablet, it's the same Demons we're facing.

The commentary states that after the war, the civilisation absorbed themselves inside the Soul Cube. In Doom3, you use this Cube as a "special weapon" that kills an enemy, stealing its health. It even talks to you, with many voices, saying that it wants to destroy the evil as well. So, this tablet must be correct.

Final Tablet.

Haha, classic. This must just be a random joke by ID, you think. But listening to the commentary... it says that the "Ancient Civilisation" had a "Hero" who beat back the demons and...

You've realised now, haven't you?

So there we are. Doom1 and possibly Doom2 are set thousands of years before Doom3, if you want to believe the tablets. In Doom, you are part of the Ancient Civilisation... and not only that, but you are their "hero".

Now, there's nothing to say that this isn't all bullshit, just a joke ID put in that's not meant to be taken seriosuly. But I want to believe it, because it's so damn cool.

Also, I haven't actually reached the ruins yet, so it could turn out that the Ancient Civilisation were Aliens after all, and I've blown this whole thing out of proportion.

Alternatively, everyone could already know this, and think of it as bieng obvious... which is why you're probably all giving me strange looks right now... :/

a spoiler about the hero (possibly) at the final levels
I remenber there was something like a tomb before the final boss and there is something like a big sarcophagus whit a semi humanoid shape that looks like holding a sword ala medieval style but the architecture dont look human, the arquitecture looks more similiar to the crashed alien spaceship of the movie alien1 (where the astonauts find the aliens eggs)

That's actually pretty interesting, suicide.

There was no soul cube in the first Doom or Doom 2, whereas the last tablet clearly (:p) shows that the "hero" had it. And Carmack said it was a remake, so dammit, it's a remake! :p

*tramples all over Sui's imagination and sense of discovery a bit more for good measure*

But ALSO, the Civilisation absorbed themselves into the Soulcube AFTER the war had been won. The marine defeated the horde of Demons - therefore he couldn't have wielded the soulcube. So the Tablets aren't 100% accurate anyway. I mean, it's like the bible, it didn't necessarily ALL happen (unless you want to believe that it did, in which case you have to accept that Doom1 and 2 are wrong). So I stick with my theory. Ha.

RIPOSTE

If the tablets aren't accurate, how could the events depicted be true? Perhaps it was God testing our faith, or a failed McDonalds ad campaign that was secretly shot into space.

...

You've ruined my thread ;(

kk let'sall just talk about McDonalds or whatever ¬_¬

pfft at least I have 270g in WoW... more than you have... ner

Err yeah, Doom 3 is a retelling of Doom 1. It's not an exact replica.

That's quite a theory there but I don't think it holds any water. DOOM 3 is just a different take on the basic concept and events surrounding the UAC and that famous lone Marine.

"Hmmm! That's 1 doomed Space Marine!" -Duke3D
Sorry but I couldn't resist. lol

OMG I SAID IT FIRST PLZ QFE ME !!!111

I cant wait until they can effectively smooth out the pixel effect on bump maps.

I'm pretty sure there is one PDA that states that a archiologist deciphered some of the writing where it stated that thousands where sacrificed (but it didn't say the whole civilization) for the soul cube, whilst a few escaped to another planet, now the first and the fourth stone tablet clearly shows a humonoid figure, so what if the race on Mars was in fact a Human race that escaped to Earth, I'll confirm the find tonight after I've done my work

Yea, I heard that as well- a sceintist believed that the Ancient Civilisation were our ancestors. This only strengthens my theory.

And of course Carmack is going to say it's a retelling- because it IS. They simply put this in for all the hardcore fans, as almosta joke. But I think it's a really cool idea, so I'm going to believe it >:(

lol Sui, you got pwned. Go back to your Doom3 religion, we're nonbelievers!

But in Doom 1 there are the words UAC everywhere.

Read "The Making of Doom 3". It IS a retelling.

You obviously don't understand the meaning behind this discovery. It's just a joke by ID, a little hint that's been tagged on. It's not set in stone- like I said, it's just a hint. But if you've got the imagination to fill in the blanks and look that little bit further, it becomes so much more :P
