Okay, so I bought Doom 3 last Wednesday ( :) Killer game, BTW :D ). And I was wondering this: Why is there $5 extra tacked onto the already retail price of $49.99? I mean, why is the game $55 instead of $50? Will Half-Life 2 also be priced at $55? I'm not complaining nor upset, I am just curious because I have never seen a game MSRP'd at $54.99.

BTW: Can anyone post some gory screenshots of Doom 3? I'd like to see them just for kicks.

The prices are going up just as they are for other things

It's not inflation, on the whole video game prices are dropping. Doom 3 is just overpriced, there's nothing else to it. There's absolutely no excuse selling a single player oriented game with extremely limited replay value for $55.

I suspect thats also part of the reason for such large scale piracy. Usually when games cost $50 you can find deals for $40-45, but with Doom 3 you're lucky to find it costing $50. In almost all cases if you order online the game will end up costing around $60, which is just absurd.

If Valve chose to do it with Half-Life 2, it would be somewhat more justified, seeing as they are including extra content besides HL2 (such as CS:S and possibly other mods). But I still think it would be a bad idea. Many people only care about HL2, and they would probably rather pirate the game than spend higher than normal prices for it, which is probably what happened to Doom 3.

I believe HL2's MSRP is 50, although the collectors edition will be rediculously overpriced.

And game prices aren't really rising. Hell, the UT2k4 collectors edition was 40 dollars. Best 40 bucks I ever spent.

lucky bums, I paid $69 (non-CE!)
