Dooming Alert

The single player from practically every MP-based game (Quake series, Unreal Tournament series, et al) has allways sucked. SP was based entirely on bots. People buy these games to play multiplayer. Games where the design team put little time into the MP aspects had this odd tendency of having sucky mp. People don't buy these games for the Multiplayer, but for the singleplayer. That's just the way it is. Every once in a while games come along where both aspects are quite good, and this prompts even more expansion. (Half-Life) IMHO, HLDM wasn't all that great, but don't yell at me for that, it's just my opinion. Give Doom3 some time. Oh, and wait for it to come out so you can play it before making judgements. I think 4 player could rock, especially with the ammount of interaction with the environment. As long as the arenas are not too overly huge, it should be fine.

Ok...

No one said it wasn't a design decision.

The game could be moddable to the X-Treme but that doesn't change the fact they they are releasing a game that needs to be modded to get features many gamers would expect (Granted, Valve seem to be doing that with a couple of things as well but that has nothing to do with this little debate)

but you could say that same exact thing about the first half-life

sure it had an EXCELLENT single player, but it wouldn't have sold nearly as many copies, and continue to sell to this day, if not for the multiplayer mod community support which came AFTER it was released.

Yes I'm sure you can say that about halflife...But that wasn't part of the debate.

Anyway, I'm off to bed and i wont be adding anything else to this tommorow.

LOL, like a fact can not become part of a debate just because you ask to excuse it. A HUGE parallel can be drawn between HL and D3 from the direction of multiplayer and MODers roll in it so it fits perfectly into the debate.

As for Doom 3 only having 4 player multiplayer out of the box, I am sure that was done so people will not bitch about Doom 3 having bad multiplayer.

Look at any new FPS right after it comes out and you will notice a trend. The trend is that server limits will get turned as high as possible and everyone then joins the servers with the most players. It does not matter if the FPS is a tactical and stealth like game or run and gun ... everyone will pile onto the servers that have the most players. This allways ends in bad gameplay because the maps have more players on them than they can support and everyone gets poor frame rates and alot of lag. No one blames the obvious fact that there are just to many people on the server ... it is allways X-FPS has bad multiplayer!

If you force people to play the game under settings it was desined for the gameplay will just be better.

All I know is I absolutely cannot wait for some 4-player deathmatch, especially now that the Berserk pack makes your character scream at the top of their lungs when they get it for the duration of the power-up. Imagine walking down a dark corridoor and hearing that yell getting closer...

Exactly. Doom 3's multiplayer is limited to low player counts because its supposed to be an intimate experience. They are trying to make the MP scary like the SP should be.

Personally, I feel a large DM game takes some of the suspense away because with more players there is less focus on each individual player and you are more likely to encounter somebody who is worse than you. :)

Edit: Question. When you preorder the game at the store, do they give you the figure at that point, or when the game actually arrives at the store?

It's in pre-order box, so yeah, you get it when you pre-order the game.

I believe the figure comes in the preorder box.

I think they made an excellent choice for the resources they had available for developing the MP. The way they have designed it will give you an intense and unique experience that you wont find in any other game. It will be soemthing we havn't done before.

The main multiplayer in Doom3 that interests me is coop on Xbox or in mods for PC. I've never been a big fan of straight death match...

I'm thinking that Doom 3 will be just be a great single player game with so-so multiplayer but really cool multiplayer mods to me (sort of like Half-Life). I don't think this 'atmospheric deathmatch' will work out the way I'd want. It's just... well... the fear factor is pretty much gone if you know what's hiding in the shadows. It will always be a guy with a gun, nothing horribly scary or anything I can't handle if I'm quick and skilled enough. I can't see myself giving a shit about my shadow though, dying in a deathmatch is pretty meaningless. Last man standing would be really intense though, actually quite stressful, but the possibilities would be pretty limited by such a simple gametype. What would really benefit from those shadows and atmospheric effects is Natural Selection. Imagine walking down the hallway with a shotgun your commander spent valuable res on. If you lose it he probably won't be giving you another one. An there could be any kind of beastie lurking around, even cloaked. A skulk, a gorge with his mass of offense chambers, a lerk, a fade or heaven forbid; and onos. That's the kind of mod I'm looking forward to, and those mods will be where I spend my Doom 3 multiplayer time. I wouldn't be surprised if the stock DM went the way of HLDM, but hey, you never know. It could very well be amazing.

i think 4 player D3 MP will be awesome. reminds me of when i used to play 4 player Doom on a local BBS here and on Dwango... those matches were awesome. the battles were more intimiate... you remembered who shot you in the back like a bitch and who keeps hiding in some corner. you get to know each players style and change yours accordingly. in a 32 player deathmatch it's just chaos... run ahd shoot and run and shoot. same reason i try to find CS servers with 4 or 5 player teams. more than that and most of the teamwork element is lost and people start playing stupid (public servers i mean).

and how about 4 player team based deathmatch? 2 players per team, eh? sounds sweet... like you'd really have to work together and watch your buddie's back. almost like co-op... against another co-op team, heh.

there hasn't been much change in multiplayer game styles for awhile, and i commend id for trying something new... although this idea of using shadows to reveal position is also used in pandora tomorrow, which i haven't played but have heard the multiplayer is really fun... which is also only 4 players btw. i'm more excited for D3 MP than HL2 MP... but mainly because i know what the D3 MP _is_... wheras i have no idea with HL2.. except for CS:source of course... but CS isn't anything new.
